Please use this thread to engage with others about sales and services in r/Metrology. Ensure to familiarize yourself with the guidelines below to make the most of this community resource.
Moderation note: We've noticed there's quite a few independent contractors (and Metrology Vendors) engaging in the community with solid advice while sometimes offering services & sales inside a discussion. While we appreciate the engagement, we want to encourage general advice, but limit promotional content to this new Monthly Megathread, where you can advertise these sales and services.
For now, while we gently try to roll out this new feature and comply with Reddit Terms & Conditions. Sales & Services offered will be limited to independent contractors, or small in-house work. For the time being, we will not allow Sales, Services or advertisement from Metrology Hardware and Software Vendors. Ongoing discussion is currently underway on how we can better integrate these larger vendors into the community.
As always, we would love to hear your feedback and encourage you to use the re-surfaced (pun intended) sidebar on the right to message us with any comments or questions.

Using Calypso 2021 on a duramax. Whenever I have 2 single points and recall to a 3d line, I get a warning to recall feature points instead. Every time I do that tho, the point is taken at the center of the ruby. So why does it recommend using recall feature points, if the points recalled are from the center of the ruby? I don't have issues when I use a 3d line and recall, the measurements are more accurate I feel. Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: Capaz was able to help me get the star probe set up, thanks again brother š
Hey guys. I'm running a Zeiss Eclipse with RDS head and TP20 modules. Calypso 2016. Obviously a dated system, but generally it still works really well for us so we've avoided updating.
My problem is, I'm not formerly trained, but was taught by someone that used to do the Zeiss training (a friend, so he came over and worked with me for a few sessions to get me going, but obviously not a certified course). We mostly did general programming and didn't really cover a few things that I'm having issues with, and everything I'm trying in Google is leading me to newer systems like Duramax with an XXT head, and the process seems very close to the same but slightly different and I'm getting caught up.
We just got a new star probe, and I have no experience with them. I went to create the probe and started with the Z axis stylus. Boo issues qualifying it. Next I did the X- stylus, which started ok but eventually crashed into the sphere. I changed the sphere coverage from 180Ā° to 90Ā° (not sure if that was the correct thing to do) and it worked. I went to move on to the X+ probe, and it wouldn't complete it's little automatic program. It touched off about 4 times and then popped up with "no results". Not sure what I did wrong but I just can't find any information on setting this thing up. Hoping someone here can help me out.
Additionally, I'm not familiar with setting up the tool rack, but someone crashed into it recently and it's been having some issues loading and unloading probes. I tried to follow the program for setting the rack location, but I'm doing something wrong because it just crashes into the rack. Having the same issue here with Google... It seems the newer systems have a big countersink to locate the tool rack. Ours does not. So again I'm failing to find relevant instructions.
I'd absolutely LOVE to update to a newer machine, but it's just not in the cards right now. So while I'm sure many of you might want to suggest we stop living in the Stone Age, we're just hard stuck right now. Budget has been heavily skewed towards machines on the floor, as long as nothing in QC is a full on necessity (we did recently upgrade our vision system however, which also has touch probe capabilities š)
Thanks for any help offered!

Hi all, I am trying to do a FAIR on a part with a pattern of (#10) .190-32 UNF-2B Fine Threaded holes for helical coil inserts around the perimeter of a 42" aluminum ring shaped workpiece. The print specifies a positional tolerance of .005" to a planar datum for this pattern. Checking this on the CMM using both a helical cylinder scan with a scanning touch probe along the thread pitch (4ish revolutions), as well as a cylindrical stylus probe scanning concentric circles at 2 elevations - I find with both that I am within the positional tolerance but the nominal size requirement and tolerance values are unclear. Pin gaging I see anywhere from .201" to .212" (not sure what caused this in the mfg process but we will deal with that as well). I find plenty of tables online for Class 2B fits, but not for Standard Threaded Inserts. Unless I'm mistaken, my thread plug go-no go gage verifies only the thread pitch, the minor diameter could still be wrong.
How can I check and report that these holes are passing or not? Using PC DMIS fwiw
TIA
Edit: Thank you for the suggestions and replies! It would appear my threads are out of tolerance on the minor diameter (.2041ā after tapping) and the part is scrapā¦ The holes were pilot drilled with a .201ā flat bottom drill and then rigid tapped (both in a high quality CNC machining center) so not sure how this happenedā¦. Any ideas?

Hello, I have a question when I extract points measured with Metrolog X4 from the point cloud (Faro Zeiss scanner arm) I see that if I extract the point as "point" or "extreme point", the deviation value changes. Which method is more realistic? Which one do you use? We are talking about differences of 0.5 mm, so that difference is very large. How do you extract the measured points from a scanned cloud? With a point projected in CAD or without projecting? And how do you extract it, point or extreme point? I would appreciate a quick response, since I don't have much information about it and I continue measuring and evaluating pieces.

Does anyone happen to have the BSPP spec handy, having problems with gages being stamped from manufacturer wrong, thanks!

Iām having a problem with a part. When I do the alignment on the part the next line is set relation to cad coordinate system (defined). After doing this I check a profile. The profile tolerance is .002. If I tolerance this profile it shows the profile out of tolerance by .018. But when I do the math all the points come in and the profile is at .0008 to .0017. If I remove the set relation to cad line, the profile when tolerance is done shows in spec. Whatās going on? Am I doing this correctly? Do I even need this line?

Hello,
There's a lot of talk on here about ASME, but if I want to further my knowledge on ISO GPS, what are some good resources?
Specifically on 1. Understanding callouts (profile limits angle, form, distance (if properly defined)) 2. Understanding how to measure (a circle can be measured with 3 points but 12 is better)
Is there a YouTube channel, a website, an institute? The norms are mad expensive and quite dense.

Not sure if itās OK to post that hope itās ok? I have 2 SCR600 racks for sale. Got them together with the CMM but not needed. If anyone needs some let me know.

So Iām putting together a drawing basics and GD&T class for my facility. Iāve been a mechanical inspector for many years and I thought itād be fairly quick and simple. Iām about halfway done and am realizing itās a much bigger task than I anticipated. Thereās a lot of knowledge there. In my head this all seems very basic and logical. Explaining it aloud has shown me some concepts are not easily understood.
So if you have a solid understanding of GD&T, take a minute to pat yourself on the back, itās complex. Thatās all I really came here to say.

Iām fairly new to programming using PC-DMIS and I am having an issue with the location of my probe on screen as I am continuously running into errors when Iām running my program. My alignment seems fine and Iāve set my CAD=Part in my alignment after trying multiple things. Iāve also recalibrated my probe but I canāt figure out what my issue is. If someone could please help me out it would be much appreciated thanks in advance š¤

Any tips for searching for calibration vendors that will do in-field granite surface plate calibration? Perhaps I am not using the right keyworks, but I am finding that google is not very helpful. I am either getting sponsored results that are not in my area or the plethora of other calibration services unrelated to surface plates. Are there specific accreditation organizations for surface plate measurement that would have a directory of vendors that can provide this service local to me? I am located in Fairfax, VA.

So we had a couple parts fall off a rack and I checked the cylindricity, finding the fall had knocked it out of tolerance.
Because of a curious engineer wondering if there is a bend, I need to find the Axis Straightness which I havenāt done before. He did clarify he wanted axis not surface.
I thought I could use the red straightness dimension but it gave me 10 inches for the straightness which wouldnāt be right.
Whatās the best way to check this?
Thanks for any help with probably a dumb question!

MCOSMOS V4.3.5
I need a little help.
Often I need to be taking sizes that engineering are requesting, but they don't always want the same sizes. Is it possible to run a program to align a part, then when the program has run the alignment the operator can take over and start taking sizes themselves rather than using a program?
Thanks.

I am working with a Romer-Hexagon measurement arm, model Omega 2046, which is from 2009. The software for it originally came on a floppy disk, but I have been unable to install it. I have tried on different computers and various versions of Windows, but without success.
I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with this type of arm and knows if there is a way to obtain the software through other means or if it is compatible with other types of software. I would really appreciate any help. From my research, this arm operates with the following software: PC-DMIS, G-Pad, G-Surf, G-Tube, and R-Scan. However, I haven't been able to install them independently, and the floppy disk that should install the software is not working properly.
If someone could help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I am currently working on finishing my astrophysics bachelors degree and I am burned out on academia. My original plan was to pursue a PhD and work as a research scientist, but since that is off the table I am exploring other career options. My coursework has been centered on pure science rather than engineering, so I am worried that might make me a less attractive candidate when looking for a job.
Do you have any recommendations for books I could read that would help me get a feel for metrology as a field? Are there any certifications or courses available online that would be worth getting? I'm interested to hear what kinds of things I can do to prepare so that I don't try to enter the field with nothing to offer potential employers.

Hello,
I am developing a clamping mechanism to position a cylindrical insert very precisly (upside down)(positon tolerance<6Āµm). I can measure the accuracy with a camera (for other reasons as well) but only from below. How can i measure the position if the insert is tilted? or is another sensor (and other axes) from other positions a must?
Thanks!
