Tbh I enjoyed the story with pleasure. I am also not a story/lore guy but the short breaks helped build up the tension and too look around this beautiful crafted environment. Also I turned the language to Japanese and no subtitles so I could make nice screenshots and don't get bored listening while at it.
You would also be able to build tension and appreciate the environment much better if you were in control of your character. Those same things are exactly what I love so much about searching the map for the monster in the earlier games. Nobody talking to me about nonsense while I do it either, just me by myself in nature.
