There's also no consistency on what is a weapon skill and what isn't. Like, attack and crit eye are both weapon skills despite applying to all weapons universally, but agitator gets to be an armour skill? Flayer? Burst?? Oh but guard and guard up oh yeah that's totally a weapon specific skill you should deffo have to choose between guard up and attack (who made these decisions???).
It feels like this system was made right before the game came out and they had almost no time to test it, rather than an integral design decision that was there from the moment they decided you could have 2 weapons.
The thibg I have noticed is that all the +damage armour skills are conditional. Flayer is only on Wounds, Burst requires rapid hits, Agitator is only when the monster is enraged, Foray is only while para/poisoned
I’ve run Lance from HR 1-60 now, in post game and still haven’t felt the need to slot guard up. Chip damage here and there, but noting really smacking me that I feel the need for guard up. Just guard 3 and offensive guard seems to do the trick. Only sheathe when I mess up and need to heal. 0 reason for for it any other time. The only “draw” attack you use on the lance is when jumping off the seikret and that doesn’t even count towards the skill anyways.
Guard up let's you block attacks that are "unblockable" like the jin dahaad ice nuke and possibly Gravios laser (that might have changed for this game) so unless you are trying and failing to block those attacks, of course you're not going to see any real difference having guard up or not
