2022 Rogue: OK and volume down buttons stuck on steering wheel

Post image

Hello all, tried finding a solution to this, but my car is literally 1,002 miles outside of this warranty. My OK and down volume buttons aren’t working and the OK button is stuck in. I took the directional control button cover off and it’s a weird little mechanism where it may have lost a spring? I’m not sure. Any insight would help. One video said you need to replace the steering wheel. And I’m not looking at dropping $500 atm for a steering wheel, but my dash is wigging out. The shop wants to charge $170 an hour.

I did take contact cleaner to it, but hasn’t worked.

My 2023 is on its third steering wheel because of these POS buttons.

I believe you can get just the switches, now... but that may not be for all years. It's not terrible to do, but you need to remove the air bag, so it's not exactly DIY either. Are you in good with a dealer? Might be able to contact Nissan for goodwill assistance. This is not uncommon.

I’m handy myself. Not the first time I had to do airbag removal for a steering wheel change. I’m *hoping * I can just find the switches. That would be lovely if I could just get those and plug and play instead of remove the entire wheel.

Call Nissan consumer affairs and see if they can help you with getting this covered outside of warranty. 1-800-647-7261

Nissan consumer affairs isn't going to help with anything. They don't give a shit. Past warranty? They're going to tell her to drop the car off at a dealership, and don't touch it until they complete their investigation. They'll call her back in 3 and a half months, and tell her to kick rocks. Ask me how I know.

Thank you so much. There’s no reason why things should be breaking this early on, and judging by many others, it’s happened a few months brand new off the line.

Mine is the same stuck on the left side ...

its a internal issue not a contact issue

Mine was fine going right but it was like the spring was gone on left side. It was under warranty and the dealer replaced the entire button cluster. I figure the airbag was a risk since the clock had to be set again, so I figure they disconnected the battery during the process. The person said they heard a few reports of this issue. Not sure if it's a design or manufacturing issue.

I just went through this with my pre-owned. The previous owners had sticky fingers. My volume was fine, but the arrows to scroll the menu would stick.

I was able to use some of the compressed spray that is used to clean out computer keyboards. That would do the trick for a bit.

I ended up taking it to a Nissan dealership. They replaced the steering wheel.

Thankfully it was still within the warranty.

Ugh, I’m JUST outside of my warranty and the contact cleaner didn’t help. I may just buy the controls and do it myself at this point. I’m not shy to work, I have 2 project cars and 2 project bikes.

My up arrow was stuck and my dealer told me that had to replace the entire steering wheel, which seemed completely ridiculous to me. But it was under warranty and the dealership has good WiFi, so I worked remotely from there for a half day while they took the 4 hours to replace the wheel. The final bill was supposed to be about $1,200, I of course paid nothing. Now I just use the knob on the console when I want to change the volume, I’m not messing with that thing again haha.

So a bit of an update. I called Nissan and they were practically useless for help. They said they might reimburse me if I have it fixed. And I need to have a formal diagnostic from the dealer that’s nonrefundable. However, she gave me a tidbit that NHTSA is the one that issues recalls. So with enough complaints to them, they will investigate. It could be an argument that since the crash detection is controlled through this menu and cruise control can set itself, it’s a safety issue. Maybe if enough of it’s bitch, they’ll actually do something about it.

Volume? Didn't know the wheel controlled the Volume. Just the menus.

The far left button is volume

Oh I'm sorry. I thought the topic was about the wheel. I know that is a common failure. My mistake.

Can you use a q tip wet with rubbing alcohol? Works for my son’s video game controllers. Use a very liberal amount and as your swabbing it keep pressing as it gets web. Worth a shot to avoid spending hundreds.

I tried contact cleaner which does the same, but no avail. I popped off the directional key to see how it works and it doesn’t bounce back like it’s supposed to and gets hung up on a tab underneath. Not sure why. It’s all plastic so I had to be super careful seeing how it all worked.

Sorry that isn’t working. Post an update when you’ve figured it out.
