Reglas / Rules Nuevas Reglas para r/Oaxaca / New Rules and Guidelines for r/Oaxaca

Flairs Disponibles:

  • 🏞️ Consejos de Viaje (Español)
  • 🍽️ Comida y Bebida (Español)
  • 🏡 Noticias Locales (Español)
  • 🤝 Eventos Comunitarios (Español)
  • 💬 Preguntas y Debates (Español)
  • 🏞️ Travel Tips (Inglés)
  • 🍽️ Food and Drink (Inglés)

Hello, r/Oaxaca members!

I'm excited to join as a new moderator, and I wanted to share some updates to help organize this space and make it welcoming for everyone. With our growing community, it’s important to have clear guidelines to ensure a positive experience for both locals and visitors.

🌍 Language Inclusivity

Oaxaca has a lot to offer, and we want everyone to feel welcome. We’ve simplified the flairs to reflect the language based on the type of content:

Available Flairs:

  • 🏞️ Consejos de Viaje (Spanish)
  • 🍽️ Comida y Bebida (Spanish)
  • 🏡 Noticias Locales (Spanish)
  • 🤝 Eventos Comunitarios (Spanish)
  • 💬 Preguntas y Debates (Spanish)
  • 🏞️ Travel Tips (English)
  • 🍽️ Food and Drink (English)
  • 🏡 Local News (English)
  • 🤝 Community Events (English)
  • 💬 Questions & Discussions (English)

This way, flairs help you quickly identify the content’s language. For example, "Consejos de Viaje" will be in Spanish by default, while "Food and Drink" will be in English.

🎟️ User Flairs Based on Interests

To enhance the user experience, we’ve added some specific user flairs that reflect your interests or connection to Oaxaca:

  1. 🍲 Catador de Tlayudas - For those who love Oaxacan cuisine and want to explore traditional food.
  2. 🍶 Mezcalero Experto - Perfect for enthusiasts of mezcal and traditional Oaxacan drinks.
  3. 🕯️ Fiel de la Guelaguetza - For those interested in local customs and traditions, like festivals and dances.
  4. 🌊 Amante de las Playas - For those who enjoy Oaxaca’s beaches, from Puerto Escondido to Huatulco.
  5. 🏞️ Explorador de Oaxaca - For tourists and travelers eager to explore the landscapes, historical sites, and natural attractions of the region.
  6. 🏡 Oaxaqueño de Corazón - For local residents proud of their land and culture.

📑 New Rules

To enhance content quality, we’ve established the following rules:

  1. Respect All Members: Be kind and respectful. No hate speech, harassment, or discrimination.
  2. No Spam or Self-Promotion: Posts promoting businesses or services should be limited to a weekly self-promo thread (coming soon!).
  3. Relevant Content Only: Ensure posts are related to Oaxaca — its culture, events, travel tips, food, and local issues.

🚀 Let's Grow Together!

We want this to be a community-driven space, so please share your feedback and suggestions in the comments. This subreddit belongs to all of us!

Thank you for being part of this amazing community!

Been in mexico for 11 years, moved here when I was young.

As my fam is primarily english speaking, most media consumption I've had was US based. As a result, I actually do not know a lot of specifics when it comes to culture.

My understanding is a lot of mexico is very laid back, at least in my town. Since i'm looking for work in the city, should I bring my resume (even tho it's mostly empty) and a cover letter for interviews?

At the moment I'm relying on the internet to find jobs in the Oaxaca. Is that normal and will I find much work? At the moment I'm thinking of relying on my "whiteness" and bilingual to land a job in the tourism sect, maybe at a hotel or restaurant. But I honestly live in a very small town that has 0 tourism, so I've no experience with those locations.

Any tips would be helpful.

Hola, I am looking to adopt a furry friend, and I was wondering if there were good local organizations to adopt from? I imagine this takes place on Facebook quite a bit, but I don’t have social media. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Questions & Discussions Football in Oaxaca

Hi all - I'll be in Oaxaca for a couple nights in November, hoping to catch a football match whilst I'm there! How's the football? Is it easy to get tickets & how much should I expect to pay if so? Which stand is the best one to be in if I wanna join the louder fans?

Also, would anyone know when the provisional fixture list will be announced for the next season please? Trying to plan ahead but it's still too early.

Thanks in advance! :)

Questions & Discussions Oaxaca to San Jose Del Pacifico - drive?

Hi all! I will be visiting Mexico in November, and hoping to go from Oaxaca to San Jose del Pacifico to "stick my head in the clouds". I have researched into getting the bus/urvans, which seems like a decent option, however I would prefer renting a car & driving myself, so as to not rely on bus times etc, and being able to stop off where I want.

How are the road conditions and general driving safety if I want to do this please?

Can anyone recommend any good local rental companies as well?

I have a UK license, would I need the international driving permit to drive in Mexico or is it fine without?

Thank you in advance! :)

Travel Tips ADO protests

I wish I would have known otherwise I would have not given them my money. But I didn’t know, so I did. Does anyone know if there will be protests again tomorrow? I ate the ticket on my way down to Puerto Escondido and went coatlanes, so can go coatlanes on the way back up too, but I also don’t want to just hand over my money to ado and let them get away with not providing the actual service…

¡Hola! I’m about to visit Oaxaca in a couple of days, and I already know I will buy quite a few Alebrijes figures. Last time i was im CDMX i bought a few but the quality of them were different from place to place. So since I guess they will be available all over, I wonder if anyone know where I can find quality good ones that are reasonably priced?

Questions & Discussions Psychedelic community in Oaxaca?

Hi all! I'm considering a move to Oaxaca, and I'm wondering if there's any psychedelic community there. By this, I mean people who work in the psychedelic field in the US or elsewhere, and/or people for whom psychedelics have played a big role in their lives.

To be clear, I ***do not*** mean people from whom I can buy psychedelics or with whom I can take psychedelics.

Consejos de Viaje Children’s dresses in Oaxaca de Juarez

I'm visiting Oaxaca and would like to buy some children's dresses. Any recommendations for places in the city itself? We had hoped to go to Mitla but it's not in the cards this trip.

We aren't extremely price sensitive -- would rather simply not buy anything than buy a cheap knockoff or underpay for hand work. At the same time, I saw some spectacular kids blouses at Hilo de Nube in the $3000mx range and that isn't for us either. No doubt the work was worth it, but we can't swing it.

Consejos de Viaje I'm going to live in Oaxaca!

Hello

In August I will go to live in Oaxaca and I am looking to rent a room, preferably in a student apartment.

I need advice on areas where it might be good for me to live (for example, I don't know whether to live closer to the center or perhaps to the university) and maybe also recommendations on platforms where I can search and find rooms for August!!

Any help is welcome!!! Thank you very much and see you soon😊😊😊

Local News Police and graffiti

Hi, I've just visited Oaxaca de Juarez, and found the atmosphere to be somehow strange. There are lots of policemen on the roads, many of them quite heavily armed. There are many signs and graffiti, a big part of them seeming to have political contents (racism, femicide). My Spanish is more or less non-existent, and the free English-speaking locals I asked somehow didn't know what I was referring to. Can you tell me what is going on here? Or am I hallucinating stuff? Greetings!

Travel Tips Day trip from Oaxaca to Peurto Escondido?

We're visiting Oaxaca soon and are entertaining the idea of squeezing a day trip to the coast. We'd most likely take the ADO bus. Have anyone done a day trip to Puerto Escondido (leave in the morning and come back in the evening), and was it worth it? Or was it too short to truly enjoy?

Travel Tips Favorite obscure thing to do/eat?

Visiting for the first time for a week and want to balance the popular restaurants, sights, markets/villages with some off the beaten path stuff. What’s something you enjoy that may not be highly rated or even on the radar for most tourists? I have a few days with no agenda so want to just take it slow. Could even be sitting on this one chill bench and getting a snack from the local food vendor.

Comida y Bebida Recommendation for Birthday Dinner?

Hi, my family and I are coming down in a couple of weeks and will be there for my 40th birthday. I'd like to find somewhere a bit special for dinner on my actual birthday (a Wednesday), but am a little overwhelmed as everything looks amazing.

It would be on a Wednesday evening for two adults and a small child (nearly 4). No allergies or dietary restrictions, I don't think I can handle chapulines but we otherwise eat just about anything. We also love good cocktails. I'd like to keep it under MX$1,000 per person, if possible, but have some flexibility. We are staying near Centro and will not have a car, so prefer something walkable to there.

I was looking at Catedral Restaurante and Tierra del Sol, but open to other recommendations. Los Danzantes is booked that night.

Thank you!

Muchas gracias!

Oaxacan legend about a colorful beautiful bird who had let another bird named caballero borrow his colorful feathers but the bird never gave them back so now the bird left with only his black feathers comes out at night landing in front of people crying out what sounds like caballero looking for his stolen beautiful feathers. My dad told me this but I looked it up and nothing comes up but he said that the bird exist and when it makes calls it sounds like it’s saying caballero does anyone know what bird it is i can’t find anything online.

Travel Tips One week in Oaxaca - how to split time/potential day trips?

Hoping to get some advice on an upcoming week-long trip to Oaxaca in May. My husband and I are well-seasoned travelers excited to visit Oaxaca City for the markets, culture, art, and energy. We love exploring cities and are very happy to not have every minute of each day scheduled - we love to wander and Oaxaca seems like an amazing place for this pace of travel.

However, we have 7 nights and I’m wondering if this will be too much time in the city. I’d love to visit the beaches on the Pacific coast but I’m wary of losing two days to travel on such a short trip. I also don’t want to feel rushed during our time in the city. The general consensus among travelers asking the same questions is that a week is definitely not too long to explore the city and surrounding areas - do folks here agree? And if so, what are some potential day trips/surrounding areas to explore that don’t require a group tour? We are open to private guides but generally don’t enjoy group excursions. Is it advisable/safe to rent a car for a day or two to explore on our own?

Thanks so much for the help!

Questions & Discussions Anyone in Oaxaca willing to do me a huge favor?

EDIT: A friend of a friend is in Oaxaca now and is helping out! Thanks for everyone’s insights!

Hey everyone! I have a bit of a long shot request, but I figured I’d put it out there and see if anyone can help.

About a year ago, my (now) husband and I traveled through Oaxaca after getting engaged. While we were there, I found a wedding ring and decided to buy it. At the time, my husband thought he’d just get one later… but life got busy, and he never did. Now, I’d love to surprise him with a ring from the same place, to match mine and bring things full circle.

I remember roughly where the store is, and I’d be more than happy to pay someone to go check it out, find a similar ring, and ship it to me in the UK. Of course, I’d cover the cost of the ring + shipping + your time!

I know this is a bit of an unusual request, but I figured there’s nothing to lose in asking! If anyone happens to be in Oaxaca and would be willing to help, please let me know—I’d be forever grateful. 🙏💍

Thanks so much!

Edit: I know roughly where the store is, and it is on a a street with tons of stores. I’m not too bothered about if it comes from the exact same shop or not, since it’s just a plain gold band and I think they’d all have pretty similar bands.

Consejos de Viaje Day Trip to Huatulco

Hola! Tenemos carro. Gracias!
