I went to the grocery store today and the machine selling Pokémon packs had everything sold out. These people are fucking losers.
233
u/Ger14n5 1d ago
I’m a teacher. I buy Pokémon cards for kids to use as incentives for good behavior and grades. I can’t get anymore for them because the vending machines are all sold out.
143
u/Unhappy_Counter1278 1d ago
It sucks because these assholes just want to make easy money off kids.
56
u/FishGoesGlubGlub 18h ago
I personally know someone who is doing this and I don’t approve of it at all, and yes I let them know how scummy they are.
I will say that it’s very rarely kids buying them off of them. It’s almost always someone mid 20s to mid 40s which was shocking to hear. Kids are happy to get any cards, disposable income adults want the new stuff to gamble open for pulls.

I have a whole bunch that I’d be more than happy to send your way. They’re not “good cards” so to speak, but I might have enough to get you through the end of the year!
21
u/Aggressivehippy30 18h ago
There was a video circulating of someone catching an employee from the store it was in buying out the entire machine before the store opened. Card collecting seems like the absolute worst hobby to try and get into, pokemon particularly.
20
u/MrShadowHero 14h ago
the hobby isn’t card collecting. it’s gambling. it’s just that your jackpot has cool art (you may not even want to collect) instead of money attached. i’m of the opinion all of these types of card packs and gacha games need to be treated like proper gambling. “collecting” is a cop out of the habits the pokemon company and nintendo are building in these kids.
pokemon company makes kids addicted to gambling. should be on headlines everywhere.
5
u/OxygenThief7 11h ago
100% right, and it isn’t just Pokémon. The sports card industry has been creating gamblers for decades now.

This shit right here is exactly why Wal-Mart no longer does Magic The Gathering.
Now I have to go to the local sweaty nerd shop that literally smells like streight ass to grab some boosters if we are doing a draft game. Fuck people like this for ruining it for everyone else.
31
u/Bad_Jimbob 1d ago
Regardless of the smell, you should support your local game store. Anything’s better than Walmart
→ More replies (1)20
u/SuperPotatoThrow 23h ago
I agree with supporting local shops and everything, especially considering the shop in my area is the only one that does MTG. but man, when I walk in and it smells like mold, rotting flesh and body odor at the same time (weirdly sweet smell and not in a good way) it kind of makes me avoid the place. I'm pretty sure their building is fucked.
Really sucks because their prices are fair too. Nice people as well.

I buy magic cards like every time I go to Walmart, perhaps your local one stopped carrying them.

→ More replies (1)28
u/Gyuttin 1d ago
Then these local card shops jack up prices, lose their customer base, and end up closing shop while blaming their customers for a lack of support. Some of the most entitled shop owners that lean into the scalping then act like they are owed by the locals for their services
14
u/ManicWarpaint 1d ago
But with more demand, card shops aren’t getting as much product distributed to them due to the increased amount of hobbyist being registered as distributors (scummy if you ask me). With the lack of inventory they have no choice but to sell at market price just to make up for it. It’s a lose lose for the customers
24
u/LeftOverCrack17 1d ago
The ironic and even more sad thing is Wal Mart is what killed my family comic/card shop growing up as a kid. They built a supercenter in town and my grandparents just couldn't compete with the insane low prices.
Also the split between distribution of DC and marvel really hurt the family business aswell. It was too much having to order twice and pay twice instead of both being shipped together.
4
u/EarthtoGeoff 1d ago
No one is buying regular Magic product like this; it’s not in short supply. If your Walmart stopped selling Magic it’s likely due to theft.
15
u/FlameShadow0 1d ago
The problem is: Gamefreak, or Nintendo, or whoever makes the cards, they are not doing a goddamn thing about this.
Cards cost nothing to make. They can flood the market with this stuff so it makes no sense to resell it. Then the problem is you get all the “collectors” out here who say this will tank the price of their collection. Who cares? If you love collecting, it shouldn’t matter how much it costs, just the item itself.
5
u/ihearttwin 18h ago
On the Pokémon TCG sub, apparently the card printing machines are literally running at full capacity. Idk if I believe it but that’s the statement on the sub
→ More replies (1)4
u/CptMisterNibbles 1d ago
And they don’t even reap the profit of the high priced second hand market. There is clearly demand and they could just make more money by printing more. It’s like the one time literal corporate capitalist greed could improve a situation and just… doesn’t.

u/forwhenimdrunk 1d ago
Can’t the cashier just tell a person with multiple Pokémon things at checkout they only get one, and the rest go in a bin to be returned? I don’t understand how hoarding like this happens unless the store is allowing it to happen. Sure they say 1 per customer at the aisle but if they’re letting them pay for ten at the checkout aisle, they’re not really doing shit but putting on appearances. Just tell them they only get to pay for 1 at checkout.
That’s how all the stores did it in my town when dipshits were hoarding toilet paper and cheese during Covid. That’s how all our grocery stores are handling eggs right now. You can wrestle around on the floor with other idiots and fill your whole cart with all the toilet paper you like, but when you get to the checkout counter, they’re just gonna tell you you can buy 1 package.

It's so damn frustrating. My nephew would love to own something from Prismatic Evolution and neither his parents or myself can find a single booster pack anywhere locally. They are resellers and scalpers. They are grabbing the newest releases to sell online.
Kinda like how a musician has a concert, and all the tickets are sold out in the first five minutes. Then tickets show up on auction sites for twice the price.

u/Pups_the_Jew 1d ago
It is in the best interest of manufacturers and retailers to create artificial scarcity; including allowing resellers to further inflate the market. They understand the psychology of certain consumers. These videos are gold for them.
5
u/AdHom 1d ago
Obviously that's true and I agree. Artificial scarcity is even desirable to some extent (not like this of course) when it comes to collectibles; tons of people love the feeling of owning something rare.
It does seem though that the last 5 years has seen a drastic increase in participation in a lot of hobbies that historically rely on this and it's gotten to far out of balance. Supply chains of all kinds have been struggling so I'm not entirely sure it's even completely an artificial kind of scarcity anymore.
5
u/cucaracha69 1d ago
It's not rare, it's all mass produced plastic junk. If people wanted something rare they would learn how to do pottery or carpentry and create something truly rare.

3
u/SmashElite16 1d ago
Ever since Logan Paul got popular in 2020 for buying pokemon cards, suddenly lots of people think they can be "successful" if they can rip that one pack that will get them that "golden ticket".
4
u/AlexxorX 1d ago
I mean you're sort of right? All these latest posts are usually covering the scalpers going after the 151 sets that got a restock with special boxes ala blooming waters because they can sell it for like 3 or 4x on ebay easily. I'm sure some of them do open the packs trying to get a Charizard or a god pack, but most do probably just sell the boxes for easy cash. Same goes for any prismatic evolutions product, like the boxes theyre buying in the video also, if you look at the ebay accounts selling them 9 times out of 10 it's a sneaker/hypebeast/supreme seller.

Some of the newest sets have extremely rare cards, one specific card is worth around $1500. I’ve been out of the hobby for a few years so I’m just speculating but last time it got this popular was for this same Pokémon from another set
5
u/Twelve2375 1d ago

You do know the same kind of shit happened with Cabbage Patch Kids? Also there is only one banned episode where Pikachu used thunderbolt that involved being stuck with a Porygon in a digital world, making the screen flash red and blue. It was never shown in United States. The 4kids version also darkened the screen to decrease the strobe intensity when Pikachu used lightning attacks.

usually the register won’t let customer buy past the limit anyways no? and all the cards are held behind customer service or somewhere similar. at the store i work at, before we open, we give the folks waiting in line outside a ticket based off our inventory and what they want to buy. you don’t get a ticket, you don’t get cards. folks are generally pretty respectful about that as it really is first come first serve. and we explain to them that our registers literally will not allow us to scan items over the quantity limit either.
2
u/drillmaster125 12h ago
I went to Best Buy two weeks ago to pick up an online order when it opened and I was the only one there not for Pokémon cards. I was the last on line and the employee at the register asked if I wanted the last box and I shrugged and said “Why not?” By the time I left the store, a guy paid me basically double for what I bought for the cards, meaning I got my online purchase basically for free.
