Drugged in La Placita de Santurce

Just wanted to come on here and warn anyone traveling to San Juan, PR. I've visited before, it was not my first time here and my friend and I were drugged at La Placita. I have posted this in a fb travel group and have let my flight attendant friends know and those that travel a lot. I’m Latina, speak the language, thankfully I only had one drink & a shot(l normally don't drink, but my friend really wanted to experience the night life) but my friend had 2 drinks and 2 shots. We went out with a couple we met while on a tour to El Yunque (SpotGo through Viator - Waterfall slides and hike), they seemed so nice and I'm always very paranoid but they said they were from Connecticut and had American accents. They had a car they drove to the rainforest while everyone else took the bus. The only drinking had was from Sea Señor, this bar with no name right in the center (300 C. dos Hermanos, San Juan, 00909, Puerto Rico) and the shots were from Tulum. At the ER, the nurse said we were the 5th patients there this week alone (Monday-Thursday) who were drugged. If you start throwing up and can't keep consciousness, you need Narcan and the ambulance will provide it! Locals said the tour guides are in on it (human trafficking) and we couldn't even trust the police! The cops laughed in our faces and blamed us for being tourists, drinking at night. BE SAFE!!! It is not worth your life, these people were trying to find where we were and who knows what they would have done!

The couple who asked us to join them in La Placita paid for these drinks and called multiple times asking for our location (lied and said they didn't speak Spanish and caught them speaking Spanish). I love PR, I've had great experiences before, but do not let your guard down!

HELP WITH TRANSPORTATION

Upvotes

I'm going to PR now in April and I'm wondering if you think I can get taxis back from Ceiba to San Juan. My return ferry leaves Culebra for Ceiba on 04/23/25 at 5:30 pm, I think it's 1-1.5 hours away. Do you think I can get taxis? I already have my tickets that I got online but the only issue is transportation 😢 Or does anyone have the number of some taxis or private vans that they can provide me with?

Itinerary check!

Hi everyone! I’m going to PR next month and want to get a check on my plans, with some questions sprinkled throughout!

Wednesday- fly into SJU around noon, pick up rental car, get lunch in SJ (perhaps Casita Blanca to start off strong), drive to Airbnb in Luquillo and check in at 3, spend the afternoon at the beach there, have dinner from the kiosks*

Thursday- El Yunque in the morning, perhaps explore a different beach in the afternoon* (I’ve heard Seven Seas and playa Escondido is nice), bio bay tour at night

Friday- take a catamaran to Icacos in the morning, drive to SJ in the afternoon, drop off the rental car, check into Airbnb in VSJ, get dinner/drinks and have a night out in VSJ

Saturday- explore VSJ (los dos Castillos), explore other places in SJ during the day*, dinner, night out at La Placita

Sunday-early flight

*1- Any dinner recommendations around or close to Luquillo (within 20-30 min drive)? We are mostly interested in authentic food, but open to anything good in the area!

*2- Any other suggestions on what to do after El Yunque? We might go back to Luquillo kiosks, but open to any other suggestions in the area! Once again, willing to drive a bit where it makes sense!

*3- Are there other day time tourist “must do’s” in San Juan? What areas should we check out?

Thanks everyone!!

Irish Bar Options in San Juan

Odd request I know. My wife and I have a tradition whenever we travel to a new city no matter the country: one drink in an Irish bar.

Why? Not really sure, just became a thing.

So, what are the options in San Juan for a pint of Guinness in an Irish setting?

Calmest Beaches in Feb

Hello! Can anyone recommend the calmest beach areas in Puerto Rico to stay in during February? My dad was born on the island but hasn’t been back since he was 12. I’m planning a trip with him and my kids (ages 2 and 7) and would love to stay somewhere by the ocean where the water is calmer and safer.

We are looking mainly in the Aquadilla, Rincon, Mayaguez areas. Which towns/beaches are best for beginners on a consistent basis? Preferably with rentals available nearby. Thank you

Trip report: Mar 23-31

Hi -

Wanted to say thank you to everyone in this reddit travel community - it was really helpful to us in planning the trip! Here's our trip report - hoping this can be helpful to others:

- March 23: Arrived SJU. Our family of 5 stayed at HiBird in Condado. I have to say - I read a LOT of reviews about this place before booking it and it was aces. We got the 2 bedroom penthouse (#702) with hot tub and it was really terrific. The location was right in the middle of the tourist area with easy access to a lot of restaurants, beach, grocery stores, etc. We were able to save a little bit of $ by making breakfast in the unit, and then going out to explore the rest of the day.

- March 24: Old San Juan. Took an uber to OSJ, went to El Morro and walked around the downtown area. Had lunch at Mallorca. One tip - if you want that Mallorca sandwich with the powdered sugar and ham/cheese, it's not on the lunch menu. You have to ask for it. We ordered off the lunch menu and then saw the table next to us order the sandwich. Oh well. The lunch off the menu was very good anyway. Dinner at Orozco's, which was good - just make sure to get the trifungo, not the mufungo. Much better. Best alcapurias we had on the trip.

- March 25: Beach Day. We took an Uber to Isla Verde and bought a Resort Pass to Courtyard Marriott so the kids could play in the pool and beach. Uber isn't cheap - $60 round trip to Isla Verde (10 min drive). I would say the resort experience was ok. The property is a little aged and the flights coming and going are very loud - it's right next to the airport. The wind was also blowing pretty hard that day, so the pool had a lot of debris in it. I discussed with the hotel manager and he was super helpful and gave us lunch, which we appreciated. Wife and I had dinner at Cocina Abierta - VERY good - plan to spend around $200 pp with the wine pairing and tip.

- March 26: El Yunque. Rented a car at Enterprise near the San Juan Hilton in the morning. Went to the El Yunque tourist center and bought a map (probably a waste of money, tbh). Nice to have real bathroom facilities before hiking, though. Hiked the Mt Britton trail (very modest hike), and then went into the waterfalls along the road at Juan Diego falls. Good fun. Lunch in Luquillo at the kiosks - chose Wepa Arepa, which was a good choice. Got a little snack of bacalaito afterwards at one of the kiosks nearby - the guy heated it up in the microwave, so I was skeptical - but I was blown away by how good it was. Fried heaven. Dinner at Burrito Social in Condado which was a fun environment and tasty.

- March 27: Culebra & Vieques. EPIC day! Took the morning ferry to Culebra and Flamenco Beach. Fantastic beach! Worth all of the accolades and attention. They also make it very easy with chair and umbrella rentals nearby ($5-10/ chair, $10/ umbrella) in kiosks, and a couple of food and drink options as well. Took a cab to the airport and flew to Vieques in a 5 seater prop plane through Aero Taxi. This was awesome!! The pilot was there early and we were ready, so off we went. Super fun to see the islands from the air and get to Vieques in literally 10 minutes. Once in Vieques, we met up with friends for dinner in Esperanza and went on the bioluminescent bay tour. This is such an incredible experience. We booked through Aqua Sunset and seeing the lights streaming under your clear kayak is so cool. Stayed at Case de Tortuga for the night. It was fine for 1 night, but I would not recommend. An incredible day nonetheless.

- March 28: Pork Highway and Rincon. Had a great breakfast at Kristy's in Esperanza and took the ferry back to Ceiba. Drove to the Ruta del lechon (aka: the "Pork Highway") in Guavate. It's an interesting drive up winding mountain roads with no houses around, suddenly you arrive at the mecca of PR pig cuisine. My mouth is watering thinking about the pork dishes we had here for 2 hours. We went to 6 places and ordered lechon (whole roasted pig) + a side at every one. Some were better than others, but all were pretty darn good. Our favorite was Los Pinos, but Ranchero Original was also really good. I would start the route at Rancho Original. Drove from there all the way to our lodging at Rincon of the Seas in Rincon. Dinner at the main square in Rincon at Vatos Locos, which was recommended and lived up to the hype!

- March 29: Rincon. Stayed at Rincon of the Seas. I know this place gets good reviews, especially from people on Reddit, but I would highly advise against staying in the casita, especially if you get assigned casita #3. It was nowhere near in shape to host guests. I'll leave it at that. We spoke with the front desk and they re-assigned us 2 rooms in the main hotel, which were comfortable and appreciated. The resort otherwise was nice and the pool was great. We spent the day going to Crash Boat Beach and my kids loved jumping off the pier into the ocean. They have vendors near the beach for lunch - they were fine but nothing special. For dinner, we went to Cowboys in Rincon, which we really enjoyed. What a unique atmosphere and huge restaurant! No reservation needed. The kids got to run around, ride "horses" & play ping pong, and the food was actually pretty good! I shared a cowboy steak and sides with my 15 year old son and it was plenty.

March 30: Rincon. Stayed on the property and enjoyed the pool and walkable beach near Rincon of the Seas. Walked 5 mins over to Villa Confresi and had a lovely drink in a coconut overlooking the ocean. Right out of a postcard. Lunch across the street at the vendors off the highway - just ok. Dinner at Rincon Beer company, which was slightly above average.

March 31: Leave SJU. Drove from Rincon to SJU - about 2.5 hours. Had to try the Priority Pass lounge, which we heard was one of the worst in the world , haha. I didn't think it lived up to its awful reputation, but it wasn't good. Just there long enough to fill our belly and have a glass of wine before heading off back home!

It was a really wonderful trip, and I honestly wouldn't say there were any misses on this whole itinerary. If I could do it all over again, I might book a different resort pass for day 2, and try Kaplash for our last dinner in Rincon (my family vetoed as we had empanadas for lunch). Other than that, it was pretty perfect!

Things to do in the afternoon in San Juan

Hey all, we're going to PR for the first time in a week. We'll be arriving in the early afternoon, so we've got probably from the middle afternoon to evening of our first day with nothing much planned. We already are planning on going on a short tour of Old San Juan the following day.

Any recommendations for things to do in San Juan in just a few hours? Not looking to do anything super-active, just some ideas to chill and walk around for a while. Any favorite dinner spots?

Thanks!

a place to crash

hi! i am currently (trying to) plan a trip to PR and would love insight on where to stay for the time being. i know san juan is very touristy and people say to stay there because of everything near by and others recommend not to.

i plan on leaving san juan very often and really indulging in the what the island has to offer! should i city hop and rent different spots each night? or remain in one place and take the drives?

thank you!

edit to add important info:

it will be a party of two staying 5 days! we really want to support local businesses such as restaurants, car rentals, airbnbs, and anything else. i have looked into el yunque and i’m getting so many mixed reviews of getting a tour guide vs doing it on our own, i would really like some advice! la placita has so much controversy (i would like to experience the night life for the first time and i know my friend wants to go out), is LP a good spot? i don’t want to hear english music either lol, spanish pls.

Rio Grande Horseback Riders tonight?

We just got to PR today and are driving back to our condo in Luquillo. We’re on PR3 and just passed a huge group of people on horseback (maybe 50) with music playing. There were more headed down the road to join them. What is this? It looked really fun!

Resort Recommendations?

Hi! Looking at a trip to PR, I especially love the combo of beaches, rainforest, and waterfalls. Would love a budget friendly but luxurious place to stay, extra points for private pool/soaking tub outside. Rainforest Inn looks intriguing but pics on site seem a little limited. Any recommendations??

Ferry to Vieques

We (2) are trying to go to Vieques on Tuesday (4/8). All online ferry tickets are sold out, and it says there are only 111 tickets available at the box office. Would we be able to go to the box office on Sunday or Monday to purchase tickets in advance for Tuesday? Or do we need to just get there early on Tuesday?

Monday Options

👋🏻 My husband and I will be visiting for the first time May 3-10. The Maui subreddit was invaluable for our trip there and finding similar value here, so thank you in advance!

We arrive Saturday and will be in Old San Juan through Monday morning. Our Airbnb that night is near Naguabo. I had hoped to do El Yunque but it seems like we'd have to drive in, do whatever and then circle back to go around Luquillo and Farjado to get there, because there isn't a north south route though - is that accurate? I thought we could do something else then, like the pork highway, but I'm gathering a lot of things out of Old San Juan are closed Monday and Tuesday? What would you recommend if you had time to kill between say 9 and 3 on a Monday?

Vieques All Cash Stolen on Beach

Had what we thought was a “secluded” time at what was a relatively empty (and beautiful!) beach La Chiva. Made the stupid mistake of leaving our rental car keys on the beach while we went swimming in the waves and lost line of sight on our stuff. Rest is history - had $500 of cash in various places in our car and these guys were clearly pros - swiped every single dollar in every crevice of the rental.

The only other person in the water was a middle aged looking woman who was unassumingly lying on the sand at entrance 6 to the beach when we first entered. She later followed us into the water alone with a pool float. We were totally unsuspecting but in retrospect it is clear. She was keeping line of sight on us so that she could direct her thief partner to strike at the perfect time on our unattended bag. Then once they’d got the keys getting into & thoroughly searching the car would’ve been easy since they’re all parked in secluded spots on this beach behind vegetation (no one could see cars from water).

Let this be a warning to all would be tourists. Puerto Rico isn’t all that safe from crime and unfortunately there are locals who prey on unsuspecting tourists. Left a very sour taste in my mouth though we’ll try to make the most out of the rest of our trip.
