“Please, mom!!! Give us food!!! We are starving!!!” - my rats, sitting in front of the giant mass of food they’re stockpiling in a cardboard box, trying to play me for a fool 😒

160

u/Scandinavian_Rascal 1d ago

the lord tests us in many ways

11

u/Generalnussiance 1d ago

But admittedly they are clever rascals and deserve the treats!

3

u/Both-Construction184 12h ago

My boys do this too, won’t eat seeds but always look at me as if they dint have a bowl 3/4 of seeds they refuse to eat, and I always give in

u/LaraGrayBaird 1d ago

I love the predictable behavior of rat owners. 1. See them doing something they aren't supposed to do. 2. Don't intervene, to see where it leads and if they succeed. 3. Be in awe of ther achievements and intervene after experiencing the joy if ther mayhem.

I'm a perfect specimen as well.

u/Fishlape 1d ago

If they can't hurt themselve or damage something I will just watch, one of the fun parts of owning rats

79

u/LaraGrayBaird 1d ago

Absolutely, one of the greatest sources of joy.

42

u/Towbee 1d ago

You can do THAT? Several times a week

38

u/BeepBepIsLife 1d ago

And good for their little brainies to let them figure something out!

12

u/vaquuiinha 1d ago

It is! I love that you can pretty much see the gears turning inside their heads

I second the motion.

9

u/Jane_xD 1d ago

Do yours eat the food? Mine turned that down and didn't eat it after having a doffrent brand. When I read the backside list of ingredients and compared it to shunamite or ideal ratfood mix it also didn't come off as a good feeding choice either. If yours eat this, that's more than fine :) I just wanted to share findings. I found a similar, cheaper and better one from the mix ratios where I just add 2 or 3 other things according to my groups needs :)

4

u/Fishlape 1d ago

I actually looked at different sites that said this is good food. The sites are in Dutch though so I don't think you can use it. What do you use? Maybe I can find that here too

5

u/ohmysexrobot 1d ago

Watching them problem solve to create chaos is the best activity

17

u/Pokabrows 1d ago

I mean do you really even get rats if you don't enjoy the chaos just a little bit?

3

u/SCsongbird 13h ago

I didn’t know about the chaos. But I love it. I wanted pet mice. A friend breeds rats and offered me a couple. When I visited to see my little guys as babies, I bonded with them and love them so much.

3

u/enqlewood 12h ago

Why is this so true stop bro 😭😭

757

u/Zitronenkringel Autistic - don't take it personally 1d ago

I'm surprised she's actually opening it and not just chewing through the plastic (like my poor, starving girls)

162

u/JanaM2003 rats, rats, rats, rats, rats, rats, rats, rats, rats, rats, rats 1d ago

Right? My boys always went to town on the plastic as if they didn't eat for weeks (the fact that they had a full bowl of food in their cage and many treats scattered around the free roam area obviously didn't count)

108

u/Technical_Job_9598 1d ago

The secret ingredient is crime :) makes it taste better

9

u/Beau-bonic Ex Rat Dad 1d ago

Just like sneaking cookies and candy as a kid.

3

u/wisecrack_er 1d ago

Not sure if I'd consider it a crime or just pure laziness. 🤔

😄

Others would claim this kind of laziness as "smart efficiency."

4

u/abysmal-human-person 1d ago

Hey, sorry if this input is unwanted but are their thing for them to just chew (not food) in their with them? They like to chew to wear their teeth down

13

u/Fishlape 1d ago

Yes, a lot of different things, they don't use them though, only like to chew things they aren't supposed to chew on

11

u/Mastercodex199 1d ago

It's the crime. Ahhhh, to be part of a mischief....

4

u/purple_spikey_dragon 1d ago

Mine had a 4 story cage (converted from a closet with chicken wire type door) with wooden houses, toys, blankets, ropes, anything chewable, and yet any time we let them loose they would go straight to any object that wasn't theirs and leave their mark. They passed away two years ago and i found bite marks on my yarn box... today! They ate a hole in our old sofa... Nothing was holy to them.

3

u/Zukazuk 1d ago

My most hyperactive troublemaker looks just like the rat in the video and just this week I've prevented her from eating caulking, the wall, and the hinges of the toilet seat.

2

u/Fishlape 1d ago

She is actually the sweetest girl, never causing me trouble, she loves to just sit with me and be around me. The other girls, especially the white and brown one you can also see in the video is a trouble maker. She'll climb in my curtains, chew on cables, jump on my desk to eat my plants and just a lot more dangerous climbing. I can't have any toxic plants just because of her and she has killed more plants than I can count.

4

u/Zukazuk 1d ago

Poppy is obsessed with her humans too she wants to be with us all the time but also to climb everything.

2

u/Fishlape 1d ago

Just love them so much, they like to run and climb but they also like to be around us, just hard to choose. Altough they found a great option, climbing on me and inside of my clothes

5

u/Zukazuk 1d ago

Mine join me in the bathtub because apparently I can't bathe myself. (Yes Chai has seen the vet for the abscess on her neck. She's currently recovering from her third surgery on it. Fingers crossed we finally got it.)

1

u/Fishlape 1d ago

My girls love to shower with me. Of course only when I don't use shampoo or something

u/daughterofwands90 14h ago

Speaking of ratties climbing curtains…here is a pic of what we caught our two girls doing not long after we had moved into a new house during their free roaming days lol. It’s high up so you can imagine our panic. We promptly took down the fugly curtains in their room, and when we showed the pic to our friends & family…we used to say that our girlies are both suffering from communal suicidality and we were booked in to take them to see a rodent psychiatrist 🤣. Reactions were priceless because no one knew whether to believe us or not haha.

We have no idea why they insisted on climbing all the way up the curtains because not only were they free roaming back then in their youth…their nest was inside a sofa that was exclusively only theirs, plus they had a bunch of other rat only furniture in their room 😌. They’re elderly ladies now and have downsized to a nice enclosure, but of course still have their own room 🤣🥹.

2

u/Fishlape 14h ago

If I let her she will climb to the top and just sit there, luckily I'm tall so I can reach up there and she will just walk onto my hand. Old picture though.

1

u/Ente535 1d ago

Rats do not need to chew to wear their teeth down, this is achieved via bruxing.

16

u/abysmal-human-person 1d ago

They do both, and since they’re gonna chew regardless, you might as well get them something you don’t mind being chewed

3

u/Ente535 1d ago

True, chewing is good enrichment for them. But the main way they reduce the size of their incisors is bruxing, as far as I know.

63

u/OvenFearless 1d ago

To me this is just proof of how intelligent they really are. They understand the concept of breaking something or opening it instead. For such a little fellah that’s mighty impressive when both of my cats chew threw any plastics if they know treats are inside lol

50

u/Entire-Ambition1410 1d ago

German researchers found that rats can understand the complex roles in playing hide and seek, and they understand that the roles change. The rats liked playing the game so much, they kept hiding to continue being found.

14

u/cthoolhu 1d ago

They are SO SMART and I’m tired of trying to convince people of this

8

u/Zukazuk 1d ago

My girls are smart, but my boys are himbo idiots unless you stick your hand in the chicken bag, then they suddenly remember how the cage door works.

12

u/NAP_42_ 1d ago

Two of my girls were really smart and figured out teamwork. One distracted us by pretending she was going to do something naughty in a very obvious way so we would look at her while her sister snuck around us to go dig in our plants... then they swapped. They tricked us this way more times than i'd like to admit 😅 they were also very sweet and gentle and taught their little sisters manners, until i let them have an almost empty tube of malt paste. The younger ones started to lick the opening, and one of the smarter girls knew to just shred the tube to get the good stuff 😄 she never destroyd stuff otherwise

4

u/Sylentskye 1d ago

Exactly. My cat will just chew through everything.

175

u/hlynn117 1d ago

This is enrichment for a smart rat. That little hop on the bag... love her.

105

u/cammasia rattie kisses for all 💜 1d ago

My girls learned how to open screw-top jars. Why are they all so greedy??

7

u/SnowTheMemeEmpress 1d ago

That's scary smart. See if they can crack combo locks next

3

u/enqlewood 12h ago

Did they actually?

5

u/cammasia rattie kisses for all 💜 12h ago

Yes, one of my girls loves food and if the top isn't tightly screwed on, she will open it and tip it over. Luckily the others haven't learned it yet!

46

u/holopixie 1d ago

It will never stop amazing me how smart ratties are.

37

u/Entire-Ambition1410 1d ago

Hero Rats is a company that uses African Pouched Rats to detect explosives. The rats are too lightweight to set off the bombs, and they are comparable to bomb-sniffing dogs.

9

u/PhxFresh420 1d ago

That's some interesting shit right there.

3

u/Zukazuk 1d ago

I want pouched rats so bad, they can live like 7 years.

3

u/herc_thewonder_sd 1d ago

And chew through cement lol

4

u/Gramernatzi 1d ago

Imagine how powerful they would become if they could live for decades

39

u/TheHalfwayBeast 1d ago

Clever girl!

33

u/RandonEnglishMun 1d ago

No rat is ever fed enough

37

u/Stoney_pillow 1d ago

Clever rat! Next thing she'll be out in the kitchen cooking french food 😋

27

u/viptenchou Milk, Milo& Muffin ♂ (RIP my sweet boys) 1d ago

You can see the wheels in her brain turning. What a clever little girl! You can't even be mad about it. 😂

26

u/twyls 1d ago

I love it when the other rats come to help. "Oh, you got it open? We'll take some credit and some food now, please."

18

u/CynthiaSeit 1d ago

I love the baby in the background sitting in paper macaroni

11

u/Fishlape 1d ago

She's my oldest girl, very sweet but I notice her aging

6

u/Palace-meen 1d ago

Went back and watched again after reading this. Oh my goodness so cute!

17

u/sar1562 1d ago

So kind of her to open the zipper. Mine just chew through the bag.

11

u/Top_Resolve_2446 1d ago

Don't you just love them, smart cookies 🤣❤️

9

u/Sability 1d ago

She's smarter and harder working than I am, I say let her have em

6

u/Doodkapje 1d ago

"if you're not gonna feed me ill do it myself ffs..."

5

u/CrazyRatDad 1d ago

5

u/littlemissbitchcraft ✨oh my boggles✨ 1d ago

Oh my boggles, what a smarty pants! Now I want to see what else she can open 🤣

5

u/milesjr13 1d ago

I wish these smarties had longer lives. I couldn't handle them as pets with so short of lives 😭 too cute. Too smart.

4

u/Corinne_H7 1d ago

It's the only con of having pet rats. My son and I were devastated after we lost our boys. They brought us so much joy and love.

4

u/B4byJ3susM4n 1d ago

She be like “Ugh! If you won’t do it, I’ll get it myself!”

😂

5

u/g0ld-f1sh 1d ago

I hope you let her keep at least one for using her big brain, that was a joy to watch her figure it out in real time, what a smart cutie omg

7

u/ratpacklix 1d ago

Ahh, thats cool and cute at the sale time!🥰

3

u/XiedneyDavis 1d ago

what a smarty girl! she is too sweet!

3

u/luf100 1d ago

Rats are too dang smart.

3

u/bunchildpoIicy 1d ago

aaa she's so cute look at her go

3

u/kidmarginWY 1d ago

Not a rat. A warrior to correct Injustice.

3

u/twilighttruth 1d ago

Rats are too smart for their own good sometimes!

3

u/Mediocre-Smile5908 1d ago

Peanut knocks the treat tub off the side every time in the hope it will open when it hits the floor.

1

u/Fishlape 1d ago

Haha, this girl is also called peanut, but in Dutch

3

u/tatted_tmc 1d ago

So cute! 🥹 I miss my girls so much. We had three, they passed on a few years ago and I don’t think my heart will ever fully heal. I love this sub and all the adorable pics and videos. Rats are so smart and affectionate and I wish more people knew how wonderful they truly are ❤️

3

u/CLOWTWO Shadow(RIP), Mistey(RIP), Ben(RIP), Ninja(RIP) 1d ago

What a smart baby omg

3

u/Rich_Dimension_9254 1d ago

Look at that poor starving baby!!! You feed her RIGHT NOW! And let her have access to a full bag, opened at ALL times

(I swear a rat did not type this 👀)

1

u/Fishlape 1d ago

I always feed them twice a day, after their free roam time. They were out for around 30 minutes so she decided it was breakfast time. I let her eat a little out of the bag before getting her out. She was just really hungry and the foraging toys with food isn't good enough or something (it's the exact same food) obviously I should just keep their food open l

2

u/Rich_Dimension_9254 1d ago

Oh I was totally kidding, I’m not the best at sarcasm though 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Fishlape 1d ago

Oh I know, maybe I'm the one that is bad at sarcasm🤣

3

u/LordLilith 1d ago

Rats and other animals have amazing learning potential as long as food is involved 😭😂

3

u/HereticHamster 1d ago

rats are amazing. you'd think they'd just chew through the packaging, instead they learn to open it. shows more respect than a lot of people I know.

1

u/Fishlape 1d ago

Haha tell me about it, my sister can't open ANYTHING without tearing the whole package

3

u/exposed_69 1d ago

Oh no 😂 next thing u know another chief in the house

3

u/Ok-Story-5491 1d ago

They’re so clever! My girls don’t trust me at all, I give them a treat and they hold my hands and turn my hands over and search every inch of them before they’re satisfied I’m not hiding anything else 🤦‍♀️😂 makes me laugh every time

3

u/Slight_Can 1d ago

She's fed plenty, she just needs a bigger or more emergency stashes. I bet if you emptied her dig box you'll find a tiny fallout shelter. 😁

3

u/PlayfulHumor8803 1d ago

Not the others coming over when they hear the bag 😭

3

u/DanisaurusWrecks 14h ago

What a smart baby. All of mine would have chewed the plastic lol.

3

u/Hott_Taco 14h ago

Awe! And she did a proper job of opening it! Unlike the usual easy route of chewing a hole in the bottom and making a huge mess.
Such a good girl!

3

u/Ok_Mention7613 13h ago

awww she looks just like my marvin just skinnier haha

2

u/MonkeyMind71 9h ago

Omg, that cute little face.

2

u/ellie_zhou12345 1d ago

That's so cute!

2

u/Cronchy-Cassowary 1d ago

Such intelligent creatures!

2

u/rkts13 1d ago

So smart ❤️

2

u/BaTz-und-b0nze 1d ago

Well don’t tease the mice, they’ll grow self sufficient and escape the cage to irritate you in the morning when you go to eat your fruit loops and behold no fruit and no eggnog.

2

u/ernie3tones 1d ago

Smart girl!

2

u/crazy-ratto Total of 30 rat-children in my lifetime. 1d ago

My rats refuse to eat that brand!

1

u/Fishlape 1d ago

My girls love it

2

u/dcp00 1d ago

Smart babygirl :)

2

u/BeepBepIsLife 1d ago

Look at the little problem solver 🥰

2

u/lyra_silver RIP Mal, Gin, Simon, Toph, Kaylee, Sadie & Kuma 1d ago

She's clearly starved. Lol

2

u/StunningBeauty_1 1d ago

Interesting.

2

u/Somebody729 1d ago

Glad my rats didn’t learn how to do that

2

u/Fe1is-Domesticus 1d ago

She's so polite for not tearing into the bag! So sweet 😊

2

u/h1zchan 1d ago

So polite! Pretty sure he could have chewed through the bag if he wanted to

2

u/h1zchan 1d ago

So polite! Pretty sure he could have chewed through the bag if he wanted to

2

u/sugonmacaque 1d ago

The mice in my walls would have just bitten a hole on the bottom of the bag.

2

u/Yesnt-yesnt 1d ago

What a smart girl!

2

u/liss100 1d ago

She's obviously starving to death. She barely had the energy to jump on top of the bag... poor hungry baby.

2

u/NextCommunication642 1d ago

If this is her main food they can pick out their favourite pieces and not eat everything

1

u/Fishlape 1d ago

I know, with the food they had before this one they did that, with this food they eat everything. I also give them fruits, veggies and a lot of other things like rice and pasta

2

u/Obvious-Pop-699 1d ago

Have you seen the movie "Willard"?

1

u/Fishlape 1d ago

No I haven't, was quite a bit before I was born so I haven't really heard of it

2

u/Trappedatoms 1d ago

I just freaking love rats so freaking much.

2

u/Last-Tooth-6121 1d ago

Fine I will do it myself

2

u/WithoutDennisNedry 1d ago

I love her! And her little companions!

2

u/Beneficial-Ad3913 1d ago

2

I like this page

2

u/SlightlyAmbiguous 1d ago

She’s a genius……

2

u/Vulture2k 1d ago

I am surprised they actually open it. I thought they would just chew through the package.

2

u/ChaEunSangs 1d ago

No fucking way

2

Little rat needs food

2

u/KimberKitty111 1d ago

I love how smart rats are 🥰🥰

2

u/she_is_munchkins 1d ago

The epitome of determination and resilience 🤌🏾

2

u/Parking-Main-2691 1d ago

And then there was mine...knew his fat adorable white booty didn't need to work for it. Just lay on the floor and look pathetic..Grams will give me treats so I go back to my little hidey hole since she's kinda scared of me.

2

u/Traditional_Scar_541 1d ago

Rats are clever creatures

2

u/sillyGrapefruit_8098 1d ago

Aw man rats are soooo cool. I hope to have some one day! How clever!

2

u/Master_Xenu 1d ago

If rats lived longer I'm sure they would be smarter than most people.

2

u/empr1me 1d ago

i used to feed a hamster of mine by straight up just outright putting him in his food bag. it really helped me figure out what he actually liked from the mix! and then he would get food bag time as a treat but he would eat everything in his enclosure because i would sort through and remove his least fav bits.
