There's Still 1 Thing I Can't Give Up

Airhead Xtremes. I don't eat them all the time & I don't eat many of them but I can't give them up.

I've still lost 35 pounds and changed every other aspect of my diet. Does anyone else have an indulgence?

I will say, it is nice to at least have the self control around them now.

Chips and queso, I can’t quit you. But just a little with a handful of chips makes me happy now, no more eating a whole bowl and 2 baskets of chips.

u/accioqueso 1d ago

Measuring out chips and queso for the win!

u/KennaSade 21h ago

I’M SCA-REAMING!!!! Not your name being the summoning of queso! 🫕 Is this a prank?! 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly my diet is probably not as good on semaglutide than when I was trying to lose weight without it. I no longer have a fear of calories because I can’t overeat. So if I want to eat pasta, cake, peanut butter, bread, I do and I love the fact that I no longer obsess over it.

I tend to agree with you. For me it’s not only the fact that I can’t overeat, but also I have to kind of ask myself what can I handle eating right now. Before I just ate what I knew I should eat, but I ate too much and I indulged sometimes. Now it’s literally like what can my stomach handle. And everyday is different.

Same here! I used to eat NOTHING processed back when I was trying super hard to lose weight on my own. Now I am down from 160 to 130 and I eat bagels, sweets, really whatever I want just small amounts. It’s so freeing to no longer be terrified of carbs. Meat occasionally gives me the ick.

u/H_is_enuf 1d ago

Meat barfs me too sometimes

1

u/tropicalislandhop 1d ago

Do they make you feel yuck? I've gotten the impression those types of food affect people badly. (I'm only three days in, so preparing myself in any way to avoid feeling like that!)

5

u/H_is_enuf 1d ago edited 1d ago

That’s interesting, at first they did!! I really only wanted to eat salads. But I’ve been on it for a year and 3 months now and the only thing that yucks me is meat, sometimes.

2

u/Mountian-flower 1d ago

It’s meat for me too! Especially chicken!

1

u/Late-Print2098 1d ago

I’m also three days in and have the same question! :)

Honestly I've not 'quit' anything, I've just shifted to enjoying those things in smaller amounts and on rarer occasions.

We had girl scout cookies in the house. Goddamn things are made of crack - but one box of samoas that, in the past, I'd have housed in 2 sittings has now been open for a month.

That's what it's all about. It's not about giving stuff up, it's about understanding that you don't have to ALWAYS have it in your mouth, essentially.

u/Tweetchly 1d ago

Yes, 1000%. No more forbidden foods in my life. Been there, done that too many times. Over the years I’ve learned the only long-term success comes from moderation, not extremes.

2

u/DaCozPuddingPop 1d ago

90% clean, 10% whatever the hell I want. Some weeks more , some less. Last weekened we went out a bunch I drank a lot and the scale reflected that - this week I ate clean and this weekend I'm not partying, and of course I stuck to my normal gym routine. Weight is right back where I'd expect it to be.

If you can change the way you eat on the NORMAL days to something sustainable, e.g. high protein, high volume, low calorie...you can get away with a lot more when you choose to.

I love sweets. It makes me feel really good to just be able to have one or two pieces of candy now and have better self control! I don’t feel bad about it - I see the self control as a huge accomplishment.

-15

u/quizno 1d ago

It’s not an accomplishment. You needed a medicine to fix discordant hormone levels that were causing you to overeat, and you got the medicine and it worked.

2

u/NoHippi3chic 1d ago

You have all the subtlety of a hammer, but you are not factually wrong. The thing is, we are more than our medical bodies and feelings of control around our habits and behaviors are intrinsic positive feedback loops. Framing it as a feeling of accomplishment is a healthy response to medication supported behavior change. It encourages compliance with the protocol in any medical intervention.

3

u/quizno 1d ago

I get what you are saying but I didn’t mean it that way at all. To me, framing it as an accomplishment gives credence to people’s claims that overweight people have done something wrong.

I’m not overweight because I have poor discipline or am lazy, I’m overweight because my damn brain tells me I’m hungry and need to eat even when it clearly shouldn’t be. Taking a drug that fixes the hormone issue at play fixes everything and doesn’t require me to have more discipline or be less lazy, because those things were never the issue to begin with.

Anyways, I should have taken more care in how I stated this so as not to denigrate anyone’s progress. I just think it’s important to frame it correctly. By all means, rejoice that you’re finally getting treatment and it’s working. And rejoice that you are indeed capable of making the right decisions about diet and exercise when not saddled with the weight of a broken hunger response.

I always have a “thing” too. It just kind of rotates. Right now it’s a Little Debbie Fudge Round every night. A couple months ago it was two Reese’s.

What I’ve learned is that you don’t have to eat healthy 100% of the time to keep the weight off. Moderation is everything. If I only ate kale and tofu, I wouldn’t be happy, and being happy is part of being healthy too.

In the beginning, I was super strict. I tracked everything and had a really clean diet for the first year. But now, two years in, my eating habits are just different. I eat what I want, but I don’t want as much of it. My cravings changed, my portion sizes changed, and I’m still losing or maintaining.

If I want a bacon cheeseburger with fries, I’ll have it. And I don’t gain anything back. You don’t have to give up everything you love forever — just long enough for your habits to shift. As long as your calories stay under what you burn, you’ll keep moving forward.

u/MrsKaich 1d ago

I used to be neutral on them, but now, if I go “off”, I’ll have a handful of skittles, starbursts, or a couple airheads. I don’t know if it’s the chewy, or sugar, or flavors… but now I love them!

2

u/tropicalislandhop 1d ago

Is it easy to not eat too many? I love skittles but I usually can't stop if I buy them. I've just started Sema so hoping I have better control. If I could have just a couple would be a tasty way to satisfy a sweet tooth.

3

u/KennaSade 21h ago

Fam, don’t do it. If you have a sugar craving problem, it’s not manageable. At least, not for me. I feel like the aversion only works on certain things, like maybe you can resist desserts or decadent drinks, but I made the mistake of digging out fruit snacks that were in the garage and now I’ve got my brain expecting gummies and Fruit Roll-Ups before bed. I don’t overdo it but that’s just because I’m on a limited supply and I physically can’t take myself to the store to restock. From one sugar addict to another; NO. 👎🏾

1

u/MrsKaich 1d ago

Totally is!! I usually have like 20 (being honest here) and that all and it totally works for me.

3

u/tropicalislandhop 1d ago

Well thanks for giving me a craving! I haven't had them forever and now totally have to get some! :)

1

u/MrsKaich 1d ago

Haha! Sorry!! But they seem to actually keep me in check. I think about them, have a couple, and I’m set for the week

2

u/tropicalislandhop 1d ago

I forgive you! haha I just bought some mini york peppermint patties (ate 2, hit the spot!) and some skittles. Fingers crossed my self-control has improved!

2

u/MrsKaich 1d ago

Ohhhh put those patties in the freezer - holy cow. They last longer

5

u/calloony 1d ago

There's no way I can give up my Mike and Ike's! I don't eat many of them, but they are a must to have on my coffee table. And I have lost 51 lbs so far.

4

u/rm647617 1d ago

Granola and berries in my yogurt. My nutritionist said if I have to put something in the yogurt to pick just one or the other since they’re both carbs….but honestly I just can’t I love it too much and figure there are way worse things. I weigh the granola out since I know it’s higher calorie and easy to go crazy with. The purely Elizabeth vanilla Choc chip granola has me in a choke hold lol.

3

u/DeliciousChance5587 1d ago

If you give up things you love then this journey will just be miserable. I eat what I want in small amounts and continue to lose.

4

u/yonotyouagain 1d ago

I didn’t even used to like candy at all really. Now I keep some sour patch kids in my bedroom and eat about 10-15 every night. Dunno why but it’s nice to have a little treat that isn’t affecting my goals.

2

u/Frosty_Exit374 1d ago

What are airhead Xtremes? I’m from UK so am wondering as they sound wild

1

u/RevolutionaryYam8783 1d ago

Airheads is a chewy taffy like candy, thought the extreme is a sour version that's a little more gummy imo, more like a Haribo sour rainbow strips. I miss the original taffy style airheads, though sometimes I find them at the American Import story or the little American Section at Tesco.

u/afteeeee 1d ago

I can't have cookies in the house. I've gone months without buying them but bought a box the other day. It was gone in 2 days - and it was a big box.

2

u/doinmabest1 1d ago

Chocolate and my salt and vinegar Snacklins. I do weigh out my chips, and I found Gatsby chocolate at Walmart that’s 180 calories in the whole bar. Sea salt is my favorite!

2

u/Brenda3915 1d ago

Ice cream. But, I limit it to once a week or less. And it’s a pre measured individual cup of Hagen Daz. Only 3.5 ounces. I buy them one at a time.

2

u/IndependentNo3143 1d ago

Have you tried fruit riot? They sell at Walmart and safeway. It's frozen fruit chunks covered in a sour candy-ish coating . They hit the spot when I want something sweet .. the sourness keeps me from eating too many

1

u/Difficult-Yam-6991 1d ago

I have not but I will try.

2

u/RuggedHangnail 1d ago

Chocolate

It always has been and is still nearly as important to me as oxygen.

I just eat less of it now.

2

u/Emergency_Capital873 5h ago

I can’t quit a happy meal from McDonald’s lmao I still eat once every other week. It’s all about balance!

1

u/General-Border6925 1d ago

I can't quit sour patch straws either, but the stuff is still working 😆

1

u/Cptrunner 1d ago

Scandinavian Swimmers from Trader Joe's. Exactly 4 per day (one of each color) 😜

So good

Milk in my coffee. I transitioned to a more low carb paleo eating plan which always made me feel great in the past. It’s when I allowed in junk food that I got into trouble with binging. Those items where you cannot eat just one. Before starting sema I had to wean off Zoloft which ironically made me crave scrunchy salty stuff like mad. I was getting all sorts of digestive issues and skin issues and so I decided to do a whole30 elimination diet. I made it three days before I caved on milk in my coffee. Whole milk (Fairlife) is no a permanent fixture in my morning routine. I keep it to 8 ounces and since I tend toward constipation in general I limit dairy the rest of the day unless it’s Parmesan or a small cup of yogurt. I am fully cognizant that a diet that includes candy, cookies, chips, pizza, fried chicken and French fries is why I gain so much on Zoloft. I had no inhibitions and ate like a pig. Now I’m paying for that indulgence. I had to admit that an an addiction to hyperpalatable ultraprocessed foods was very real, just like a heroin addiction. And there’s no way just a little bit once in a while for me will not work.

Yes, lifesaver gummies 😞. I can’t give em up.

1

u/Signal_Care_5458 1d ago

My secret vice is Jelly Bellies. I can't keep them in the house because I can't resist the queen of jelly beans.

2

u/Difficult-Yam-6991 1d ago

I think it's crazy that most people's vices are gummy. I wonder if it's the gelatin? Something our body needs. Idk.

Who is the queen?

1

u/Signal_Care_5458 1d ago

Maybe some trace element we are missing. I have no idea. If you are not familiar with them try www.jellybelly.com

1

u/Silverware_4444 14h ago

Yes I agree that’s crazy! I take gummy vitamins and the recommended daily serving is 2 but I admit I’m eating 3-4 a couple times a day lol

2

u/Quixand1 1d ago

I love jelly bellies. I haven’t had any since I started because I will eat an entire large bag in a day. I’m curious as to whether I can pace myself now. 😂

1

u/Proud_Living3293 1d ago

Red Bull 🥹 at least once in a while

1

u/justaddcheese 1d ago

Any sort of gummy candy or jelly beans. Which was never my thing before sema.

1

u/Separate-Union-5938 1d ago

My morning latte. I know proffee is a big thing for a lot of glp1 folks, but I love steamed milk. It is my daily treat, and I figure it into my calorie budget.

1

u/nomadandhound 1d ago

Jelly Belly jelly beans. Except now I only eat 3 or 4 instead of a handful.

1

u/hazardousjen 1d ago

I wasn't a big sweet eater until I went on sema. Now I crave sugary snacks. I don't over-indulge, and have lost 79 pounds in 15 months, but wow, I do have a hoard of sweets that I just crave, and I have some when I crave em. Otherwise I eat a lot of lentils and spinach. Just strange the changes from sema, in tastes, and cravings.

1

u/Alarmed_Memory_5183 1d ago

Nerd gummy clusters. I still have them often, just about 5 or so and I am good, still actively losing and staying in deficit.. can’t give up my nerd clusters 😋

1

u/Key_Landscape_5727 1d ago

I really haven't given up anything, I don't want to ever feel like I'm denying myself. I just eat smaller portions, and exercise more. I'm down almost 70 lbs

1

u/Quixand1 1d ago

I have a yasso frozen yogurt bar every night. They’re only 100 calories and have some protein, so I say it’s fine ;). I used to have two full-sized drumsticks or snickers ice cream bars every night, so my yogurt bars don’t seem like much of an indulgence.

I also tried to quit my Diet Coke habit because I know it’s just not the best, but I cannot. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/whalergirl17 1d ago

Self control is the key. I have not given up my 2-3 drinks

1

u/KennaSade 20h ago

I really want to lose weight so I’m fighting temptations. It’s hard, Jesus. Sugar keeps calling me in different forms.

1

u/youre-both-pretty 20h ago

Lollipops are my indulgence. I’m essentially sworn off sugar, but organic yum lollipops are sort of tart and sweet and I really enjoy them when watching tv. 20 minutes of flavor and I’ve only consumed 1 small piece of candy. This beats eating half a bag of gummi bears and then dealing with a rock in my gut. :)

1

u/joanibaloney 12h ago

For me, the magic of this med is that I don’t have to give up anything! If I want a cookie, I eat it. The difference is that I can just eat one cookie and walk away, as opposed to triggering a binge. I have found that when I have a restriction, I just want that food more. I love how sema has removed the power of food for me! It’s been life-changing!

1

u/Born-Caterpillar9066 2h ago

I currently hate all my favorite foods and somehow developed the taste for brisk lemonade 😂

1

u/LaurelMtGirll 1h ago

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
