We're USA TODAY reporters covering sextortion recovery services. Ask us anything at 3 p.m. ET on April 1

Hey everyone, Rachel Hale and Nick Penzenstadler from USA TODAY here. We’ve reported on the ins and outs of for-profit companies and individuals offering sextortion victims assistance services, and we’re hosting an AMA here on Tuesday, April 1 beginning at 3 p.m. ET to answer questions.

Digital Forensics Corporation, which has been discussed in this sub, is among the best-known for-profit players trying to help victims. But a USA TODAY investigation, based on business filings, lawsuits, internal company documents and more than 100 complaints to state regulators and the Better Business Bureau, shows a pattern of customers claiming they received inflated promises and high prices.

Among the allegations our reporting found:

  • DFC aggressively markets their service to recoup sensitive personal information online taken by sextortionists, but then in contracts insists that it makes “no guarantee of outcome or results.”
  • DFC uses an escalating sales pitch known as “Phase I,” and “Phase II” that works as a hook to get customers to buy more services.
  • The company charges thousands of dollars even in cases when it can't stop blackmailers from contacting customers. It offers monthly installment financing that can span six years and charge up to 18% interest.
  • If customers miss payments, DFC has an in-house collections department that in one instance called a customer 35 times in four months after he had already declared bankruptcy.
  • The company anticipates complaints from consumers – discouraging them from posting negative reviews, writing warnings into their contracts and goes so far as to threaten legal action for “defamatory, confidential, or misleading reviews.”

Here’s the full investigation:

Exclusive: These victims say a company took advantage of them – and it cost them thousands

We also found that the mental health implications of being scammed, then taken advantage of again, can be grave − especially for young men, who are most frequently preyed upon. In this piece, we looked into how sextortion support groups are plagued by recovery scammers.

These young men were being blackmailed. Then, they lost more money.

If you're unable to make it to the AMA on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET and would like to ask a question ahead of time, please drop it in the comments here if you're comfortable. If you'd like to message a question to us privately, please DM (u/usatoday) or Rachel (u/rachelhalereporting) or Nick (u/npenz).

Female Victim You Are Not Alone: A Guide for Female Survivors of Sextortion

You are safe now.
You are capable of healing.
You are not defined by what happened to you.

💡 What is Traditional Sextortion?

This guide is for people (most often women/girls) who have experienced traditional sextortion—a form of exploitation where someone threatens to share your intimate images or sensitive details about you unless you do things they demand.¹

Unlike financial sextortion (which involves demands for money), traditional sextortion usually involves pressure to send more imagery, appear on a livestream, or engage in in-person sexual activity.

It can also overlap with other forms of abuse, like online sex trafficking (when your content is sold) or intimate partner violence (when the abuse is done by a current/former partner).

🧠 Who Are the Survivors?

Anyone can be targeted. Many women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals experience traditional sextortion every year.

There is no “type” of person this happens to—and it is never your fault.

🛡️ How Do I Keep Myself Safe?

1. Stop replying.

It might feel terrifying to cut off contact—especially when they’re threatening you. But the longer you stay in touch, the more power they have. Be certain to block, not just ghost, so it is clear you are not receiving any messages.

Survivors often describe a turning point when they stopped responding. Even if they try to create new accounts, they usually give up once they realize you’re not engaging.

2. Tell someone you trust.

"Reaching out is the best thing you can do. The people around you want what’s best for you… They will not love you any less. They might even gain respect for your courage."
— A survivor²

  • If you’re under 18, tell a trusted adult: a parent, teacher, school counselor, coach, therapist, or religious leader.
  • If it feels safer initially to talk to someone anonymously, you can reach out to the RAINN Online Hotline (24/7), or text "THORN" to 741741 to connect with a trained counselor at the Crisis Text Line. Both are free, confidential, and available 24/7.

💬 Not sure who to tell or how to start? Message the mods—we can help you figure it out.

  • If you’re over 18, it’s still important to tell someone you trust. Shame thrives in silence. Speaking up can take that weight off your shoulders.

You can also start by talking to: - RAINN Online Hotline - Texting THORN to 741741 for mental health support through the Crisis Text Line

3. Be cautious about what you share online.

This subreddit gets over a million views each month. Most people here are survivors seeking or giving help—but unfortunately, a few are predators looking to exploit vulnerability.

⚠️ Be especially careful with private chat messages, even if someone seems kind or supportive at first. If anything feels off, trust your gut. Mods are here if you need help evaluating a message or situation.

🧽 How Can I Get My Content Removed?

If you’re under 18:

Use Take It Down, a free NCMEC service that can help remove or prevent the spread of your images on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and others, as well as assisting with automated removal from other sites.

If you content is already posted:

If you’re 18 or older:

Use StopNCII.org to prevent new uploads of your content to most major platforms.

If your content is already posted:

  • Report it directly to the platform as nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII)
  • Use the DMCA takedown process for other sites

🛠️ Helpful resources:
- Cyber Civil Rights Initiative Safety Center
- DMCA Takedown Guide (Without My Consent)

📣 I Want to Report. What Are My Options?

1. Local Police

  • Fastest and most certain way to get a response from law enforcement to your individual situation

2. NCMEC CyberTipline (Under 18 Content Only)

  • Report from anywhere in the world: https://report.cybertip.org
  • You'll usually receive a reply from a NCMEC analyst within one business day
  • They will forward your case to law enforcement in your area (it may take a few weeks to hear back)

3. FBI (U.S. only)

🚨 If you’re in immediate danger, contact your local police.

💬 Need help figuring out a reporting plan? Message a mod—we’re here for you.

💔 What Emotions Are Common in Survivors?

Being sextorted is a deeply violating experience. Many survivors describe it as life-changing.

You might feel:

  • Shame or guilt (even though this was not your fault)
  • Hypervigilance/fear of hacking
  • Fear of being photographed
  • Distress from push notifications or camera apps
  • Dissociative experiences

These are all normal trauma responses.

💛 You are not alone.
💛 You are not broken.
💛 You are already surviving.

With support—from professionals, friends, or this community—you can heal from this trauma. Many female sextortion survivors go on to have thriving careers, deep relationships, and joyful lives. That future is still yours.

Suicidal over extortion four year ago

I was involved in probably the most humiliating and embarrassing case you’ve ever heard. I used to have a lot of problems with sexual dysfunction and was into some weird intense stuff and they had my texts as well as a picture with my privates and face in it. Then I added them on insta. After four years is there any chance they could still send them to my former followers list? I deleted all social media and I am super suicidal over this despite it being years ago. Do you all think I’m in the clear over so much time passing? They said”you belong to me now” these are the most evil people

Goon scam artists (stay away from them)

Ngl, it’s my own fault for falling into this mess. You know how it goes—meet a girl online, things start getting a little wild, and before you know it, you’re sharing your willy on Telegram. Next thing I know, she’s got all this personal info about me—my name, age, family details, where I live, and even more , like whatttt🤣… But of course, they’re scammers, so they didn’t do much research and only found the basics. They couldn’t dig up any of my social media, so they went ahead and made a post about me, saying I was trying to assault her, along with my number and a pic of you know who 👀.

It looked fake to me, so I wasn’t too worried, but I was still freaked out. I’ve always tried to stay low-key on social media, and somehow they still found all that info. They then started demanding money—$100 to $300. For some people, that might be a lot, but I would’ve paid it just to get my info removed. Then I thought, if I pay them once, they’ll just keep asking for more, and they could actually leak my stuff. It’s like a never-ending cycle if you give in.

So, I decided to just ignore them. They came back and said they’d ruin my life, but I retraced my steps and realized my number got exposed because I saved them as a contact with a cringe-y name like “baby.” Dont do that bruh the goon ain’t even worth it. My number was hidden before, but saving them as a contact made it visible to them.

After that, I downloaded a Wi-Fi calling app, paid for the premium version (only $5), changed my number on Telegram, and hoped they’d go after the new number instead. I blocked them and cleared the chat. They still have my old number, but I’ve gotten nothing since. I’m assuming they’ve forgotten about me.

So, for now, I’m good. No need to worry. If I get any more messages, though, I’ll update and might need some help.

Retrospective I was sextorted 3 years ago. I have done extensive research on the subject (including in this sub). Here’s what I’ve found and some good news for all current and future victims of this scam

Upvotes

MY SITUATION: I was unfortunately scammed out of $400. After that I just got tired of it and decided I’d rather let them send my pictures to everyone before I paid another dollar. If you’re not familiar what they do is ask you to pay $100 and they’ll delete the picture. After you pay $100 they want another $100 and it just keeps going forever.

After that I hit “block and report” on instagram, blocked their phone number, and reported their cashapp. My pictures were never released.

Unfortunately I didn’t do research until later and deleted all the chats and everything, but if I had known I would’ve reported them to the FBI.

I spent about a year just waiting for the other foot to drop, but it never happened. They never released the images. I was confused about the situation, so I started googling. I wanted to know why they never released the pictures.

THE GOOD NEWS: It is extremely rare for them to release the images/videos

After 3 years of research I found 3 reasons why they didn’t release the images, and why you can breathe easy

REASON 1: All they want to do is make money by extorting you. If they send these pictures like they so often threaten to do, they’ve now lost all leverage they had to extort you. You can’t send the pictures then say “if you don’t send us money we’ll send the pictures” because they’ve already done it.

The threat of sending these pictures is their only money making tool, and as soon as they send the pictures they lose that tool.

REASON 2: This is a serious crime that will be pursued by both your countries government and their countries government. If you live in the US specifically, the FBI is seriously cracking down on these guys. If you live in the US and this happens to you, call the FBI and be prepared to provide them with all logs of every correspondence you’ve had with this person.

Directly from the FBI website: “This situation can feel really confusing, and the criminals count on you feeling too unsure, scared, or embarrassed to tell someone. Even if this started on an app or site that you are too young to be on. Even if you felt okay about making some of the content. Even if you accepted money or a game credit or something else, you are not the one who is in trouble.”

Possessing the pictures is evidence of the crime. Once they realize you’re not paying they will delete the images, because if they hold on to them all they’re doing is preserving evidence. This goes double if you’re a minor. It’s in their best interest to destroy the evidence if they’re not getting any money from you.

If you’re not paying they lose out on your money. If they get arrested and charged they lose out on all the money they could make from their several victims

REASON 3 (MOST IMPORTANT): This is not personal to them. They don’t know who you are and they don’t care. To them you are one of several people that they’re running this scam on. When I was scammed, they sent me a screen recording of their gallery to show me all my pictures. I also saw pictures of at least 15 other people.

The reason why I say this is the most important reason is because I’ve found in my research that almost every time they’ve actually released the pictures it’s because you’ve made it personal (I’m not trying to victim blame here). Maybe you sent them their IP or told them you know their location or called their mother a whore. All of those are probably reasonable reactions to the situation, but you’ve now made it personal and it’s more likely that they send the pictures out.

As previously mentioned, all they want to do is make money. Once they realize you’re not sending any money, they’ll destroy the evidence of the serious crime they committed (delete the pictures) and move on to one of their 15 other marks.

WHAT DO I RECOMMEND (Keep in mind that I am no expert): Block and report them immediately, keep every piece of correspondence you have with them, and report them to the authorities. Don’t respond after you’ve been threatened. DO NOT SEND THEM ANY MONEY!

ANOTHER SCAM TO LOOK OUT FOR: Don’t send money to anyone who says they will fix the situation, because unfortunately they are out there. The only people who can actually fix this are the authorities in your country, for the US that’s the FBI

💬 Have You Experienced Technology-Assisted Child Sexual Abuse (TA-CSA)? Your Voice Deserves to Be Heard.

Hi, I'm Anna Balmer, a final-year trainee clinical psychologist at the University of Edinburgh. As part of my doctoral research, I’m exploring how people have experienced professional support after going through technology-assisted child sexual abuse (TA-CSA).

TA-CSA can include a range of online abuse, like:

  • Online/technology assisted grooming or sextortion
  • Being sent sexual messages or explicit images
  • The sharing of abusive material
  • Harassment or stalking through digital platforms

These experiences are often deeply impactful, yet the specific support needed to help survivors is still not fully understood. I’m hoping to hear from people with lived experience to help change that.

💡 Why Take Part?
This research focuses on the support journey—not the abuse itself. You won’t be asked to go into any detail about what happened. Instead, the aim is to understand your experience seeking help: what helped, what didn’t, and what needs improvement. This study does NOT require you to discuss details of your abuse.

This study is in partnership with the Marie Collins Foundation and has full ethical approval from the School of Health in Social Sciences at the University of Edinburgh.

👥 Who Can Participate?
You’re invited to take part if:

  • You’re 18 or over now
  • You experienced TA-CSA before the age of 18
  • You’ve accessed or tried to access professional support
  • You feel comfortable speaking about your support experience in a private, one-to-one interview

📌 What Does It Involve?

  • A confidential, one-on-one online interview (with myself)
  • Lasts roughly 60 to 90 minutes
  • All information collected will be anonymised and remain confidential.
  • You can withdraw at any time, no questions asked

🧠 By sharing your story, you could help improve future support services for others.
🎤 Your experience matters.

Male victim Pls help

I let lust get the best of me and long story short I ended up getting caught by these guys in the Philippines. I’ve caved in and given around $2000 because they’ve gone through my Instagram and created group chats with people I know and threatened to send the nudes. I’ve paid them so they can delete and I’m tired of this sick little game. Now they want a final $1000 so they can wipe it off their computer. What should I do here I’m scared and tired and I don’t know what I should do anymore. Do I just block and pray they don’t send anything? They’ve already deactivated the account they created but what’s stopping them from creating a new one? Please I need genuine advice quickly

Got blackmailed

Hey friends,

I just experienced a sextortion scam last night, and the whole story is really strange and scary.

It started when I was chatting with someone and She claimed to be from the Philippines. After just short time of video chatting where inshow my dick and face, she suddenly stopped and said she had no more internet data — and asked me to buy something for her. I told her I’m sorry but I don’t have any. She diddnt get mad or something.

Two weeks later, she suddenly texted me my full real name and that’s when I really got scared. I’ve had my Instagram account deactivated for a long time, and I never linked my real name to any social media or public profiles. Everything is on private with no pictures of me.

She started blackmailing me, demanding hounder of Dollar or she would upload and share the video with my contacts, family, etc.

I’m still in shock. She spammed me with messages for a while, and after I ignored her, she threatened me, saying I would regret it and that I’d soon find out what stupid thing I had done — and that there was no turning back. My relative would see the video

Now I’m asking myself: Is it over? Nothing happened yet. Is she just a typical scammer who tries to scare people or is she professional? Can she find more information about me ? I also know her PayPal name and email address now — so I wonder how professional these scammers really are?

Any one with similar story?

Thank you and wish all of you good success:)

I got lucky

Upvotes

This happened to me yesterday but I was hella horny and let lust get the better of me and met someone on Reddit on a sexting subreddit, one thing led to the next and I eventually sent multiple pictures of my shlong, but without my face. There I got lucky, they said they would share those pics to all of my ig friends, now, I was panicking and was extremely scared because I didn’t want that ofc, they were playing off of my fear and I was practically shitting my pants at that point, luckily I don’t have any online payment methods, no nothing, so the only way I could pay them with the little money I had, would be through going to a store to get a gift card, it was somewhat late at night and I had a hangout with friends in an hour so there was no time for me to get a gift card which gave me time to slow down and think about it. My friend gave me extremely good advice: “they don’t have your face bro just lie if they do leak it”. It’s been a day and still nothing and I haven’t talked to them since yesterday, I dodged a big bullet with not having my face in those photos.

Hello guys. The title say all but i will try to describes. Recently I feel very alone so when this girl start to follow me with a realistic instragram profil, I trust her. Quickly the conversation switch to telegram and everything was so real. I don't know telegram, so when i saw that you can't take screnshot ( of course it is a lie and there are way to do it) i commit the mistake. Unfortunnately i was not documented so i gave him what's he wants. I lost 500 euro. I hate myself to give him the monney because i'm sure that he will share the photo to my follower on instagram. I now live in the unknown and fear. I will not give them money anaymore but the fact that my friends and familly see those pictures is terrifying. In my misfortune, I know that there are not my face on the pictures. I can lie at all my friends and familly but when the scammer will alyways say my name with those pictures. I hope with time, the injury will heal. But for now I become a shit.

There are more detail for you. Once they have your pictures they sent copies of them at their coworkers so it is unless to pay. ONCE YOU POST ON INTERNET, IT LAST FOREVER. It is very recent and nobody contatct me to understand what happend so i'dont know if my followers saw these pictures. I block every profil of the scammer. I think he has not my personnal information but I m not sure. I pay the ransom on the website paybis.com and i bought crypto monney for him. I hope my message will help other people. For now i will aware of that and i will communicate at all people that I met to be aware of that. Moreover i want people to understand that it can happen at anyone.

URGENT HELP!! PLEASE

As the title says I really need help and people to talk to. Lust got the best of me yesterday and was talking to someone online who was telling me all the things I wanted to hear ofcourse. I ended up sending pictures of my face as well as my private area with my face showing. After this they started bombarding my phone with screenshots of my following list as well as a recording of our chats and my pictures including the nude one. The chat was then forced over to telegram where they said I needed to pay 1k USD or they would send everything to everyone in my followers list. I refused but then they made a group chat with a dozen of my following and began counting down from 20 in telegram. I don’t have much money but I was scared and so I sent the money. Now they say that their friend wants 1k or else they will also release it. I genuinely didn’t have enough money so they agreed on a lower amount and are now using my account online to sextort others and if I don’t comply then they will release everything. They promised me that they will send me a recording of them deleting everything once I pay but I haven’t received anything yet and am really worried. I haven’t deactivated any socials yet and I really need help and advice. Please anyone I haven’t been able to eat or sleep since

Edit!!!! I have since deleted my instagram account as well as the app. I have also blocked the user on telegram and deleted the app. Facebook, linkedin — everything has been deleted. Just praying now, thank you to everyone that helped me

Help

I received an email today attached with a Private photo of me and my partner that no one should have access to.

A few months ago, I was hacked on Instagram. I secured it up and got the account to be safe again.

The picture attached to the email today however, was in my partner and I’s conversation on Instagram during the time I got hacked. So, most probably the hacker from Instagram and the email sender is the same person.

  • The email was sent to my school account, meaning the person most likely knows me and high chance my partner too. We are both scared it’ll get leaked especially to our parents.

PLEASE HELP!

I got caught twice in a situation with someone online who's threatening to share my photos unless I pay them money. I permanently deleted the messages because I was afraid for my life, but I do have their accounts saved. I actually paid one of the sextortionists on Cash App for $14, but thankfully, Cash App recognized it as a scam and returned the money, which relieved me. That’s when I decided to block them.

Hi, i was recently a victim of sextortion. The filipino scammer demanded 300USD, i did not pay. Thankfully the video is not very comprimising, but i am still waiting for any eventual fallout.

In any case its out of my hands. my advice is to let it go and try to move on.

What is the actual chance of a blackmailer following through with his threats?

💬 Have You Experienced Online Child Sexual Abuse (TA-CSA)? Your Experience Matters. MODERATOR APPROVED.

Hi,
My name’s Anna Balmer and I’m a final-year trainee clinical psychologist at the University of Edinburgh. As part of my doctoral research, I’m looking to speak with people who’ve accessed support after experiencing technology-assisted child sexual abuse (TA-CSA).

TA-CSA includes things like:

  • Grooming or sextortion
  • Receiving sexual messages or images
  • Having abusive content shared
  • Being stalked or harassed online

These kinds of experiences can have a huge impact, and yet, the support side of things is still not well understood. That’s where your insight could make a real difference.

💡 Why Take Part?
This isn’t about going over the details of what happened. This study does NOT require you to discuss details of your abuse. It’s about your experience of seeking help- what worked, what didn’t, and what needs to improve. Your voice could help shape how services respond in the future.

This project is being run in collaboration with the Marie Collins Foundation, and has full ethical approval from the University of Edinburgh’s School of Health in Social Sciences.

👥 Who Can Take Part?
You’re welcome to get involved if:

  • You’re 18+ now
  • You experienced TA-CSA when you were under 18
  • You’ve received or tried to get professional support
  • You feel comfortable speaking in a confidential interview

📌 What’s Involved?

  • A one-to-one online interview (confidential and trauma-informed)
  • Lasts around 60–90 minutes
  • No identifying info will be collected
  • You’re free to withdraw at any time

🧠 Your story could help improve support for others.
🎤 Your voice genuinely matters.

so when i was about 4-5 i was jn this site “chat42 . com” DO NOT enter as its now riddled with bots but ts one guy me and my brother (5-7) were like when we started a new convo our strategy was to send a photo of my puny lil face and say “hello i’m kid” i know it was dumb but i was 5 anyways ts one other man said “send me a photo of ur peenar” and i said ok cuz i was fucking stupid and then he said “now put it in ur brothers mouth” and even i knew it was getting outta hand so i stopped going on there. fast forward to about couple months ago the same guy emailed me thru one of my icloud hide my email email and sent me the photo along with “send me 10,000$ or i will send it to your entire family” and i have ignored it ever since… also we stumbled across a group of girls in omegle too and sent that photo and said “aww so cute” and some other guy i sent the photo and he immediately left the chat lmao

so, i’m usually pretty smart about online safety - but had a lapse in judgement. completely real girl, talked for hours, perfectly fine - one thing led to another and we get on video call and… you can guess the rest. she says she has to go to the bathroom, hangs up, next thing i know there’s a whole screen recording of what we did and she’s threatening to send it over to all my FB friends.

i’ve blocked the person in question, privatised and deleted my FB and removed telegram/whatsapp completely too - is it too late? can/will she send this over? my FB friends list is mostly people i havent talked to in forever, no family or anything of the sort, but it’s still insane. and i feel so dumb about the whole thing. i know it probably is too late, but if anyone has any words of wisdom or reassurance it’d be killer right now.

This morning someone on telegram asked for a pic after texting, so I jokingly sent a one that wasn't even me it was from online, they then start texting me on my phone number that I sent it to a 13 year old (they never once stated an age)... they threatened me asking for 300 my dumb self sent 20$ and they found my family's names and threatened to send to them. the scammers also made a post with my actual face pics and the other pic also stating my number and city of residence saying I tried to ape them and threatened to send that out... I blocked them on everything and haven't heard anything since. am I at risk for legal trouble?
