For anyone wondering the context of the screenshot:
Ruling party loyalists have been attacking opposition party volunteers. There’s rumours that they are planning a false flag operation against ruling party members to validate the violence and escalate.
Since the opposition formed and grew in strength enough to be a threat, that’s what the ruling party has been doing. When the opposition had a bigger rally than the ruling party during a national holiday, they announced a crackdown. They’ve banned protests by calling them civil unrest and are issuing fines of hundreds of euros (potentially equal or above a Hungarian’s monthly pay) and legalized facial recognition software to target people.
This also comes with a ban on pride, furthering their attacks on the LGBT+ community. The part that directly affected me is they’ve almost completely shut down the immigration system. The government admitted that they need foreign workers to sustain the economy so along with their massive over spending and corruption, the economy is crashing. Along with an Immigration Officer openly admitting to me that the system is corrupt and racist.

Do people in the US not know that because they have internet on their phone, it doesn't mean that the internet is IN their phone. So many people who believe that the internet is in the US

You need to watch some local channel US news. It's really hilarious. They have the general "news". Which is all local stuff, including some quaint shit like "the local eagle is now nesting". And then they show "world news" which is 3 items about the US as a whole and sometimes 1 item that is actually from abroad.

To be fair, there’s a lot of protests happening in a lot of countries (US, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary, Greece, Romania, Slovakia, and I’m sure I’m missing others) so this isn’t necessarily them talking about the US.

They are talking about the US. I posted this exact same one on here but included the comment where I asked them and they responded to me.

Oh. I didn't see you post.
That's unfortunate. I thought I finally found one.4

No worries. It's a good one, and seeing it again made me laugh again!

Anyone else would at least say “in my country” not “in this country”. Only Americans write posts in a way that assumes the audience, the platform, the entire internet, …the universe!, exists in their country alone.

u/iurope 4d ago
Yeah but
1st - they are indeed talking about the US.
2nd - people in the other countries you mentioned are significantly more likely to specify which country they are talking about. They are not nearly as likely to say "this country" and assume that everyone knows which country they mean.0

Hmmm.
Is it another USdefaultism to assume the poster is talking about U.S. just with the assumption that anyone on Reddit who says "this country" has to be from the U.S. ?

u/iurope 4d ago
No I didn't assume. I checked.
I did it anyway but checking wasn't even necessary.
Show me a post where anyone from any other country makes a statement like this. Show me only one single post (that is not in a country specific sub) please where somebody not from the US would say something like "this country" and expect everyone else to know what country they are talking about.4

I'm not sure why you included Greece, we barely had any, we only had one huge one in February and like a few small ones. It's a bit insulting for Turkey and Serbia to put us next to them when they're actually protesting against their regimes.
EDIT: lol I suppose those who downvote me know better what's going on in my own country

OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is US Defaultism:
The poster just says "in this country" on a non US-centric sub without specifying which country he's talking about.
Is this Defaultism? Then upvote this comment, otherwise downvote it.

The thing is, this is about their life.
I don't think this is US defaultism. People in the US are also alive.

I agree that OP calling out the sub this was posted in is not correct but it is defaultism because their base assumption is talking about the US without giving any context.

Well, there are more than a dozen countries that fit this description including the ongoing protests right now.
The world in general is fucked at the moment

Well, there are more than a dozen countries that fit this description
And only in the US people write "in this country" without specifying.
People from any other country would write "in my country" at best. But mostly they would say which country they mean. Only US Americans believe the US is the whole world.

Idk why it just reminds me of England for some reason ( probably cos I saw the economic part first)
