Weekly Megathread for Pricing, Dating, or Authentication Requests ("How much is this worth?" "What decade is this from?")

We really want this sub to continue to be a great resource for anyone seeking to learn more about vintage fashion, but we've seen an uptick in low quality posts coming from resellers. To maintain the quality of this sub, please use this weekly thread to ask for help assessing how much a vintage item should cost, dating a vintage item, or authenticating a vintage item. Any posts that are made outside of this thread will get removed.

Your comment should include a link to the item being discussed and any research you've already done on the item. Thanks!

ADVICE PLZ Petticoat recommendation?

This is my vintage wedding gown. It hasn't been altered yet so please excuse the fit.

There are so many shapes and styles of petticoat that I don't know what kind this dress would need. I found this picture on Google and I know which ones i wouldn't need but how do I know which one is right?

ADVICE PLZ 70’s Penny lane?

A family friend gifted this to me probably 15 years ago before she passed, she said she’d owned it for decades but I didn’t think to ask beyond that at the time. I stored it away and forgot about it until this last week when I was doing my seasonal closet change out.

It’s suede, lined with whatever this fake short shearling looking material is called but then the collar and cuffs are definitely natural fur, no buttons, just a tie closure.

It doesn’t have any labels or anything so I’ve been procrastinating by trying to find out more about it. Am I right that this is a Penny Lane or Afghan style coat from the 70’s? Or does that require the long wool collar to extend down the entire length of it and this would be called something else?

SWEET FIND! What’s the name of this style of hat?

I got it in Thailand 12 years ago and it’s been through the ringer. I want a replacement. I’ve search “safari flaps” “ball cap with two tails” and all sorts of other searches and can’t find much except modern safari hats with single flap. I really like this retro look, does it have a name so I can shop for it?

ADVICE PLZ Looking to identify period and restore this old vintage coin purse

Thumbnail

So sorry I don't know if this is the right community to post this. This is my mom's old coin purse that she has had forever. Growing up as kids whenever we wanted to go to the arcade and needed some spare change, she would give us some small chore to do first and then give us a bunch of quarters out of her purse.

Recently I asked about it and she told me that it originally belong to her grandmother Rita. She was born in 1919 so I would guess that this would maybe be earliest late 1920s to early 80s latest. She died in 87'.

I found a tag inside and it said "Made in Hong Kong for Diana Marsh."

From my research, I have found that Diana Marsh was a vintage cosmetic brand but I cannot find out much about it so I don't think it was a very significant or exclusive brand. So that leads me to believe that this might have been a cosmetic bag vs a coin bag but I can't be sure.

But anyway, it definitely has some wear over the years but is still in relatively great condition so I would like some advice on how to clean vintage embroidery and whether I could maybe restitch the tearing around the zipper myself or if I have to find an expert.

Any advice is appreciated!

ADVICE PLZ Jacket lining is crumbling - repair?

Thumbnail

I bought a gorgeous SafTBak canvas jacket from a vintage shop today (and it was $$)!

I washed it, but as soon as I lifted it to hang it to dry, little pieces started crackling off it. I figured out that it’s the internal bottom lining of the jacket, that seemed to be faux leather that’s so dried out, it’s cracking off.

I’m nervous it’s dry-rotted, though the “leather” seems to be flaking off and leaving canvas behind.

My idea is just to brush off the remaining leather then stitch the lining closed. Looking for some direction if craftier folks have run into this kind of issue before!

ADVICE PLZ where do the vintage fashion baddies congregate in london??

this is a really weird question but i've been searching online for a while and i can't find an answer!

i’m an amateur vintage fashion lover who usually wears vintage or vintage replica day to day. sometimes out and about, at vintage car shows or at places like Cahoots, i see groups of people in serious full on vintage outfits (like full accurate and genuine 1940s-70s). i want to be friends with those kinds of people who dress like that more day to day but i can't find them! do they hibernate ?? I've tried looking for facebook groups or subreddits but ive struck out, and i usually don't see them at some of the big vintage fashion fairs...

please help me befriend the vintage baddies it's so isolating being the only person i know to dress like a great grandma lol i always look like a ghost trailing behind my friends (who are all supportive and wonderful about my fashion!!)

ADVICE PLZ Advice on this coat

Hi, i found this coat on a website and these are the pics that the seller posted. Seems this coat belongs to his father , I also looked a bit into the company that made the coat - i found that the company was nationalized and they exported to URSS and Sweden. Thing is, if i buy this and it fits, how easy/ will i be able to pair it ?
Recently i'm trying to build a more elegant wardrobe, a more classic. And i found this , but i'm undecided.
What do you guys think of this coat ? find it not that good ? find it nice ?
thank you

SWEET FIND! ...but the cape bit though?

Post image

This dress is midnight blue velvet. I didn't see the cape bit until I took it from the wrack and then I just fell head over heels. Found it this morning in another local charity shop £7.50?!

Savoy's Brand made in USA

I'm thinking early 80s because it has shoulder pads.

My housemate says it's very Blake 7 😂

ADVICE PLZ Baffled by the CA date vs the garment tags

Thumbnail

I found this beautiful Maak Modell kaftan with a label inside saying it's a Nat Gordon exclusive import. The labels and style of the garment say 80s to me, but the CA number indicates Nat Gordon Imports Ltd. was registered in 1997.

Am I way off and these labels are from 1997, or is there any possibility the company was re-registered in the 90s but was older or something?

Trying to learn. Please don't roast me lol. TIA! ❤️
