Review / Advice Virgin cruise review by typical Celebrity Elite cruisers

As the title suggests, my wife and I are loyal Celebrity cruisers with Elite status who just returned from our first Virgin cruise (11 day onboard the RL) and so thought that I would share my thoughts.  I read many reviews on the forum prior to booking but found it difficult at times to determine how much weight to put into their comments since different backgrounds and experiences can shape their perspective.

Spoiler Alert: for those who do not wish to read through my brain dump (which turned out to be much more content than I orignally set out to write) …We really liked the Virgin Line.  All things considered we would probably prefer to stay with Celebrity (by a slight margin) however it’s easy to see why Virgin has a strong following

I’ll try to break it down:

Food: The food onboard Virgin was very good.  A few items were hit and miss but the same holds true for all cruise lines. In my personal opinion, I would say the food on Virgin was significantly above standard food from Celebrity and on par with the food at Blu (for those who travel Aquaclass). I would rank Virgin’s food just below the Celebrity specialty restaurants…but it should be noted that a specialty dinner is an additional $45-$60 per person.  I did prefer the galley concept better than buffets, however the wife prefers the buffets as they provide her more freedom to try small portions of various items.  The deserts were far better on Virgin

Passengers: We are both 57, non-drinkers (do not interpret this to mean prudes), and an advocate for our gay daughter so I was very apprehensive on if we would fit the crowd demographic.  All in all, the passengers were pleasant, respectful, and expressive (in the way that they dressed and acted).  Although I would guess the key age group was in their 30s, there were certainly a significant population that were older than us.  We met a lot of great people that had very diverse backgrounds.  For the record I didn’t meet the guy who ran around the ship barefoot nor the guy who tried to choke him out. :) (you may need to search the forum for this if you need more background)

Ship: With such a new fleet the ship was clean and crisp.  At one point we were next to a Viking ship and the RL made theirs look tired and old. The common areas did feel tighter than Celebrity (especially the Edge series ships).  The furniture and decor were minimalistic and modern but had a hint of IKEA.   I’m not an engineer by any stretch but the Virgin propulsion was very quiet and smooth…to the point where you couldn’t feel when you left the dock.  As far as the room, we stayed in a Central Sea Terrace and it felt small.  It was well planned out though and accommodated all of our belongings without issue.  The bathroom was certainly small but functional.  The shower was awesome with strong pressure and no wandering temperature.  At first I thought the hammock was a tad gimmicky but it quickly won me over and the wife and I fought over it every time we were on the balcony.

Service: Service on Virgin was good but certainly behind Celebrity, As an example only, when returning to the ship after a day in port at Virgin you are met with a friendly member of security who performs an initial verification and then sends you on the ship for the real screening.  On Celebrity, you are welcomed by a group of employees who set up an outdoor seating area and are passing out flavored waters, iced face towels, etc.  As a second example, on Celebrity it’s impressive the number of staff that learn your name (and address you by your name) within a few days of sailing.  Note that this is less about the ego of someone knowing your name and more about the recognition of the effort it takes for them to do this with every cruise.  On Virgin, after 11 days some of the staff recognized me (and had friendly chit chat) but I don’t think that they had any idea on my name.  Note that I was sharing this feedback with a fellow passenger and he stated that he loves Virgin because they don’t know your name…so to each their own. :).

“Adult vibe” or “Virgin vibe”: This was one of the things that I was curious about because it’s often referenced but seldom explained.  Probably because it means something different to each person.  In my experience, I will provide a few things that I felt made the “vibe” which was appealing and lacking on Celebrity.

  1. Music: There’s music playing all over the ship at just the right volume where it engages you but does not over power you.   Some of the song I knew, other I didn’t but liked right away due to the foundational beat.  Something about music wakes the soul so I loved having it playing
  2. Staff: One of the baristas had some face tattoos (nothing offensive).  He was very polite, efficient, and made great drinks.  I would think that Celebrity HR would not be able to get past the tattoos so it was cool that Virgin embraces individuality.
  3. The Diva: We met a nice couple in San Juan prior to the cruise and they recommended the Bingo with The Diva show.  Wow…what a blast.  The Diva was hilarious and very entertaining (and the bingo winners won thousands of dollars).  I can’t see this style show would be welcomed on other cruise lines
  4. Pink Agave after dark: While having a very nice quiet dinner at the Pink Agave the time hit 9pm and the mood changed.  The lights dimmed, a DJ started pumping out some great music, the staff and passengers started dancing, and they were walking around with trays giving out free shots.   It was really cool to see them flip the mood

Value: I do feel that when you factor in all of the things that are included with the Virgin fare that it is an incredible value.  As stated in the beginning, although in our case we will probably still default to Celebrity as an initial preference…we did purchase 2 Virgin future deposits that we will gift to our kids (26F and 28M).  I feel that what Virgin has to offer is right in their sweet spot

I hope you find the review helpful.

Advice/Review Request Can a TA help with getting restaurant reservations for a group!

Upvotes

I’m planning on a VV cruise for my 60th next year and we will have a group of at least 10 people. I’d rather not do a rockstar room - I’d prefer to spend the money on other things - but was wondering how I would be able to schedule a group dinner for the night of my birthday. Can a TA do this for me? The other meals were all fine with doing our own thing or not sitting together so it’s just the one meal that I’d need help with. TIA

Advice/Review Request Mattress Toppers + Fans

I have big concerns around the beds and the overall temperature of the cabin from my past two voyages on Valiant and Resilient.

However, this didn't stop us from booking another voyage on Brilliant this November! So, what have people used for mattress toppers and fans for the room? I am going to reserve a suitcase specifically to make the bed and cabin comfortable.

Hi everyone!

My partner and I don't drink alcohol but we tried these wonderful fruity (peach and strawberry) virgin margaritas at Razzle Dazzle and and Pink Agave. Since we got home we keep wanting to try and make these ourselves but don't know where to start. Has anyone else tried these and know what's in them?

Offers / Sales / Deals / Pricing Virgin Brand (e.g. Casino) cross sell offers?

On our recent sailing, we met a couple who got a free cruise. It was some deal where they had been to the Virgin casino in Vegas and got an offer that they could somehow win a free cruise if they swiped their card (or whatever the transaction required for registration or acknowledgment) on a specific day during a given time window. As it happened, they were there and dropped by the Virgin casino during that window and boom- free cruise.

So… in an age where it seems like no matter what special is going on, the price seems to always work out to about the same per person, are these kinds of promotions frequent? Or was this guy like some kind of lottery winner?

As it happens, we are going to Vegas next month, and I’m wondering if there’s any benefit to purposely seeking out the Virgin property and/or signing up for anything now in advance.

Offers / Sales / Deals / Pricing Did my upgrade not "go through"

Good Morning! My cruise is May 9, out of Miami to the DR and Bimini (so excited, this is my second time on VV, but been a cruiser for years).

I did a bid via the app for a more upgraded room about a week ago. Yesterday I got an email from VV, about bidding, how it works etc. Is this just a general advertisement for all? Or did my bid not go through in the app? Is there a place on the app I can see if I bid or not?

Thanks for your help 😊

App / Website / WIFI Premium Wifi Per Day or Whole Voyage?

I'm going on a Virgin Voyages TA cruise in May. I need the premium wifi for 1 day out of the 14 day cruise. It would be ridiculous to pay for it. Can I upgrade to premium for just one single day or will they make me buy it for the whole cruise? (sorry I did not find the answer in another thread)

Review / Advice Questions from a new sailor

Hi all! We are on the sailing next week to Nassau and Puerto Plata. I have a few questions I wasn’t able to find answers to, if you wouldn’t mind indulging me!

1) The agenda for the Nassau day references activities at Bimini. I was under the impression these are two different ports - is there a boat shuttle to Bimini from Nassau, or perhaps an error? Was not made aware of a port change and Nassau is still referenced in the title. Will call sailor services if it seems odd!

2) Shore things for Nassau are pretty wiped out. Do more slots open up on ship, or should I be looking on Viator at this point? Would love to do snorkeling with turtles.

3) Drink prices - I saw on another post that alcoholic drinks tend to be around $10. Does that include the drinks with the “$$$” marker on menus? If not, where do those tend to fall in price?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I am traveling with a friend and wanted to bid on an upgrade. Are the beds in their suites able to be separated. They look like they are king beds and we would not want to sleep in the same bed.

Offers / Sales / Deals / Pricing Refer a friend

I’ve sailed multiple times and trying to refer a friend who has never sailed with Virgin and will be joining me on a cruise next year.

I’ve created my referral link but every time my friend puts in their email address they are getting an error message (see attached screenshot): “Sorry! Oops, it looks like your email isn't eligible. Only brand-new Virgin Voyages Sailors can join this adventure. Check out our Terms and Conditions for all the juicy details.”

Have tried with multiple email addresses using multiple browsers with no luck. Has anyone used this before and any ideas about what the issue is?

Basically I am on the look out for someone who can get me the best deal (its at £2120 today on the website but no perks) and some extra freebies etc if they can (if you don't ask you don't get eh?)

We are in the UK but tbh I don't really care where you are as long as you are awesome and can help

Lots of thanks in advance

xx

Shore Things / excursions Shore Things Review - Tortola, Antigua, St Kitts, Martinique, St Lucia, Barbados, St Vincent

Just wrapped up a cruise out of San Juan, and I noticed there wasn’t much info online about some of these excursions. So, I wanted to share my thoughts on each one:

Ultimate Virgin Gorda & The Baths - Tortola
Rating: 8/10
This was a fun experience, though it could’ve been better with more time and fewer crowds. The excursion is much more physically demanding than expected (though Virgin does mention it as one of the more active trips). Be prepared to climb over wet boulders. The boat ride to Tortola is long, but you’ll enjoy a relaxing lunch at a resort by a bay before taking a bus tour of scenic spots. The hike down to the Baths is fine. The meal could’ve been better timed after the physical activities.
Tip: Bring hiking shoes that can get wet!
Would I recommend? Yes, but maybe not if you're not into a physically demanding day.

Half-Day Catamaran & Beach Getaway - Antigua
Rating: N/A (Snorkeling canceled)
We had a great time, but unfortunately, the snorkeling part got canceled. However, you can never go wrong with rum punch and a beach! The catamaran took us to a reef, where we would have snorkeled, then we headed to a beach to relax. The "lunch" was a tuna sandwich, so be forewarned or excited.
Would I recommend? Yes, if you're looking for a relaxed day on the water.

Sail & Snorkel - Sea Nevis in Style - St Kitts
Rating: 7/10
The crew was amazing, and the food on the catamaran was great, but Nevis itself was a bit of a letdown. We were dropped off on a beach in front of the Four Seasons, but the lounge chairs weren’t included, which felt a little strange. I would’ve preferred a guided tour of Nevis or maybe a different beach. The catamaran took us to a nice snorkeling spot before heading to Nevis for the beach. The lunch and the snorkeling are the majority of the rating.
Would I recommend? Probably not, since Nevis didn’t live up to expectations, even though it was advertised as a highlight.

Catamaran Island Getaway - Martinique
Rating: 10/10
Absolutely loved this one! It was the perfect day out on the water. We sailed to several snorkeling spots, and the lunch served onboard was fantastic. If you love snorkeling and relaxing on a catamaran, this is a top pick.
Would I recommend? 100%! Perfect day on the water.

Aerial Tram, Marigot Bay & Pitons - St Lucia
Rating: 7.5/10
The aerial tram wasn’t worth the effort—early wake-up time, long journey, and not really that impressive. However, Marigot Bay and the catamaran ride to see the Pitons were beautiful and made up for it. The food was just a basic tuna sandwich, but you can find restaurants at Marigot Bay (for an extra cost).
Would I recommend? Not really, unless you’re keen on the Pitons. The tram just wasn’t worth the hassle. Go for something shorter like a catamaran ride to the Pitons with or without Marigot Bay.

Harrison’s Cave Nature Trail and Rum Tasting - Barbados
Rating: 10/10 (for the cave)
The cave itself is incredible—a must-see for any cave enthusiasts! However, the rest of the excursion felt like filler. If you’re into caves, I’d suggest hiring a taxi and doing your own thing at the Chukka Adventure Park (you’ll save a lot of money and have more freedom). While the bus driver was fantastic, the whole group schedule didn’t feel worth it for the price.
Would I recommend? No. Just hire a taxi and do the cave tour by itself.

Glam Getaway to Mustique & Bequia - St Vincent and the Grenadines
Rating: 8/10
This was a really fun and unique trip, but the ride to Mustique was a bit of a wild one—there were some serious 6-foot swells hitting the catamaran! If you’re into adventure and want to see the stunning beach at Mustique, plus spend time in Bequia, this is for you. However, if you’re just looking for a peaceful beach day, there are better options out there. The glamour factor isn’t as high as expected, aside from visiting Mustique (which is home to celebrities).
Would I recommend? If you're into adventure and a bit of a rough ride, definitely. Just be prepared for the swells!

General Question / Discussion Rockstar & Mega Rockstar Behavior

Hi everyone. I’m sailing on my first VV on Brilliant Lady in March 2026. I’ve sailed on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean (Utopia of Seas in March 2025) so I’m not new to cruising. After reading a couple of posts here, I’m curious about the behavior of the RS and/or MRS onboard. Is it rare for there to be issues of entitlement, bad behavior, etc or does it take place regularly enough that it’s “normalized” or is it something in between? Is it just a couple of problem folks or is it generally a thing with those groups? I’ve had my fill of entitlement on Celebrity. My hope is that Virgin’s passengers are more chill and less like that.

food / beverage Bar tab for 11 nights

Alright avid travelers, we're debating on how much to spend on our prepaid (shared) bar tab for 11 nights. We already have the splash of romance package + $300 bar tab for MNVV, and we plan to do the pub crawl the first night.

We tend to drink 2-3 adult beverages each day, and those drinks are usually cocktails, glass of wine, or Bourbon (neat) — never beer.

Based on this info, do you think another $300 tab (which gives us another $50 complimentary added) is sufficient? Or should we get the $500 tab?

I can drink drip coffee, but I would prefer the "premium" coffees🤤☕

Offers / Sales / Deals / Pricing Caribbean 5-7 night Virgin Red Deals Coming Back?

My husband and I save a lot of credit card points every year. Last year we took a wonderful 4 night virgin cruise for free with our credit card points that we transferred to Virgin Red. However we haven’t seen any short (4-5-6-7) night sailings for a while. Anyone know when they might have more of these type of offers might come back?

food / beverage Do any of you have GERD or acid reflux condition?

I just learned that I probably have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) a month before my cruise. My doctor prescribed me some omeprazole but there isn't availability for an endoscopy before the cruise starts.

I am reading all the menus and picking the foods that are the least offensive to my stomach and will try to be careful.

Do you any of you have the same or similar conditions, what was your experience like during the trip?

food / beverage Drinks from Gunbae without eating ?

Hi, can I get drinks from Gunbae without eating there ? I have checked the prices via vvinsider and for me it seems like gunbae have the cheapest drinks, even bottles are much cheaper than via ship eats after they increased the prices. So we are tempted to get our alc via gunbae 😀
