The Squirtle is really cute. What is this item?

When you’re done, I bet r/NintendoStitch will love this

Ooh I forgot about that one! I'll do that when I finish it.

I have a really basic question. It looks like you’re putting some kind of…patch backing (?) directly onto the backpack and then embroidering on top of it and then presumably you cut out around the patch backing and voila, it’s stuck on there? Is that how this works? I want to try but I don’t know the words to google to learn this craft! (Obviously you are doing a much more complex version than I would start with)

Try looking for “stabilizer” or interfacing for embroidery!

It's tear-away stabilizer. I traced my design directly onto the stabilizer and then pinned the stabilizer in place while I got my hoop situated. Idr what brand I have, but there are many brands out there, and it's relatively cheap.

For me, this is the least bulky option for stitching directly on the bag.

If working on clothing or something you can throw in a washing machine, I definitely recommend looking for one of the water-dissolvable stabilizers.

There's also a dissolving version, that's what I use--you can draw or print on it, stick it onto the cloth, sew through it, and then when you're done you give it a wash or a soak and it dissolves. Obviously doesn't provide any stability to the end product so it's not for every project, but it's really useful while you're just trying to embroider a fiddly little design.

Interfacing? I think… I’m still new too. lol.

I’m not sure what this material is, but I have seen Stick and stitch recommended as a stabilizer/interfacing, where the excess is removed after the embroidery is complete.

There are so many really nice backpacks and bags at my local thrift store, but all of them have massive company logos (typically logos people don't want to be seen with anymore....)

I have been wanting to get back into embroidery, I think this is a good idea.

OP, I'm wondering how you decide on a pattern?

This is actually a cover project for my partner. We really don't like the direction that the company is heading, and he was about to retire the bag because of the logo. Between this sub and r/VisibleMending, I've seen a lot of "hide the logo" posts and loved the idea.

Since it's his bag, I asked if wanted me to cover it and with what. He suggested Squirtle or a Pokeball or something to that effect. So I went digging through Pinterest, and after a bit of scrolling, I found this design. He loved it, and it works out really well for covering the logo.

And now I'm obsessed because it's a functional project, not just another hoop going on the wall lol

Edit: This is r/VisibleMending.... I meant r/Embroidery 🤦‍♀️

Using the O in Cox for the button on the pokeball is inspired!

My mom spent her career in the corporate world, lots of neat stuff with some company brand pasted on.

This is a game changer, thank you

I told my manager about this project, and she loves it. I also told her if she has anything she'd like covered to let me know. I'll do these for funsies. It's worth the time and effort.

My first thought was ‘a giant squirtle asleep in n the Death Star’.

Clearly I need to rest in my pokeball for a while
