Other To the group that left the pizza boxes in Alden lecture hall today

Today, one of the music groups left a stack of empty pizza boxes behind in Alden Lecture Hall, making the room smell like pizza. What's worse is that this isn't the first time I've seen this happen. If your group is organized enough to order and eat fourteen boxes of pizza, then you should also clean up after yourselves and recycle the boxes properly, especially when there is a large recycling bin upstairs. I don't think the janitors are there to clean up your mess. It's basic manners and responsibility. Please show some respect.

Current Student Question BS/MS in 4 years – Am I doing too much?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Planning BS/MS in 4 years. Senior A-term looks wild:

  • 2 grad CS class
  • 1 undergrad 4000-level CS
  • MQP

Already looks insane on paper 😅
Should I just stretch to 4.5 years? I really want to graduate with friends but don’t want to suffer. Thoughts?

Freshman Question how should I plan my majors incoming freshman

hey, im hoping to commit to WPI for computer science undergraduate in fall 2025, I am not 100% since I'm working out the finances. anyway, I'm hoping to get into algorithm engg or robotics engg later and I am really interested in computers, math, robots, you get it.

i have participated in multiple FIRST competitions and loved my time doing that, I currently have an internship as a fullstack dev and I enjoy this as well. math, however, has always been my passion and comes to me naturally. but yeah we all know that math isn't enjoyable for anyone hahaha.

anyway I was looking to double major either comp sci + robotics pr comp sci + mathematical sciences, but here's the thing, by taking a double major, ill be eliminating one of my interests since I ofc cant do 3 majors.

how do you think I should work around this?? also like most, my main reason for uni is to be employed ( with the current cs situation this dream may remain a dream hahaha ) so what selection do you think is best for employment?

Prospective Student Question Questions for WPI students/alumni in WPI's MS in Cyber Security program

  1. How much did it help for studying for the Security+ 701 exam/how much overlap?
  2. What about for CISSP?
  3. What are some specific example careers/companies that the degree seems to lead to in the local area that doesn't require top secret clearance?

There doesn't seem to be an online only option? Except the 'teach cybersecurity for high school' online certificate

Prospective Student Question Choosing a Professor for Calc II over the Summer

Hi, I am a Freshman transferring for my Sophomore year at WPI in Computer Science. WPI offers free summer courses for transfer students, and I am planning on taking Calculus II. The two choices I have are Barry Posterro or Gu Wang, and I wanted to hear from people who have taken the class with either of them. I am leaning towards Barry because of his schedule, but both classes work for me. Any help?

Current Student Question Do I need to take Embedded Systems (ECE 2049 or RBE 200X) before I take RBE 2001/2002?

I've been trying to make my course schedule so that I go through everything somewhat in order, but I realized that RBE 2001/2 recommends background in 3 (Embedded Systems, Statics, Intro to CAD)classes that I have not taken yet, and at the time I will have only completed 1 of the 3. (Statics) I believe I can get by without taking the Intro to CAD, but need an outside opinion for Embedded Systems. If this is true, then I will need to take RBE 2001, 2002, 3001, and 3002 in my junior and senior year while still doing the IQP and MQP. Please let me know.

Prospective Student Question WPI project based curriculum for BME

Hi,

I'm curious about the project based curriculum at WPI. Does it have a real impact on internships and jobs available to undergrads as well as preparing them for graduate school ? How does it compare to the 'traditional' curriculum at Boston University - which would you recommend for someone entering college in 2025 ?

TIA

This is obscene. I’m not sticking my hands into this grimy, unsanitary “dryer”. There’s all these dispensers but no paper towels anymore… if you’re going to force people to dry their hands a certain way the least you could do is make it sanitary.. 🤦‍♀️

Prospective Student Question WPI vs UML

(Electrical Engineering major) I’m transferring from a community college and got accepted to both. In total I’ve received ~56k in scholarships for WPI which would bring my bill to ~28k. UML I’d be paying close to nothing since I wouldn’t have to dorm. I like WPI’s program but the difference is night and day for the two. Any advice would be appreciated!

Current Student Question Advice for a HUA seminar

I thought I’d ask fellow students this, but I’m currently taking a HUA seminar this term to finish my humanities requirement. I’ve done good in my other humanities courses (although I am a big procrastinator), but the HUA seems so rough. By the end, I’ll probably have at least 20 pages written for the final paper.

But working on a paper or project that long seems insurmountable to me. 3 weeks in and I’ve only really just begun working on it (my fault I know).

Has anyone else really struggled with their HUA seminars before? Any advice? I really don’t wanna be the person who has to write 20 pages in the last 2 days before it’s due. As of this moment, I have about 4 weeks to do it. Which is doable of course, I just actually have to, yknow, do it.

Thanks in advance for any advice or help. I hope that when the term ends I can make a post saying how relieved I am that I finished lol.

Prospective Student Question Can someone help me get an accurate read for costs?

I just got accepted as a transfer student. One of my reasons for transferring is that I go to an expensive school in Boston and on WPI's estimated cost sections they had this info:

I know it's an estimate but I'm really hoping someone could tell me if the housing and meal plan numbers are accurate and to be expected. Frankly, I was a little shocked to see that housing was 10,000 as I pay that but for a dorm in the city. Maybe it is about the same and I'm just dumb but please lmk, thanks!

Discussion What Happened to Library Etiquette?

Within this past few days I have witnessed people clipping their nails, on the phone/video call (often with no headphones), singing/humming, screaming their conversations even though no one else on the floor is talking, watching lectures out loud, etc. in the library. The silent floor isn't safe either! People are still talking to others and there is always this guy hacking up something in the bathroom?? No idea what that is about. I've even seen someone washing their feet in the sink. Most study spaces on campus have gone to shit, but the library is next level. It is insane that so many students have absolutely no respect for anyone else around them. RIP Gordon Library

News Email to WPI employees today/formatting stripped: Steps to Ensure WPI’s Financial Strength

Dear Colleagues,

Many of you have asked about current events and how the rapidly changing landscape for higher education will impact our operations at WPI.

Since January, we have carefully assessed a series of shifts in federal policy, including reductions in research funding and actions that could make the United States a less attractive destination for international students, that could significantly affect our institution. We are also tracking separate pressures such as the demographic cliff, which is expected to make the recruitment of domestic undergraduate students more challenging.

The total impact these factors will have on WPI remains unclear. For now, members of the cabinet and leaders across the campus are actively planning for a range of scenarios. As a first step toward ensuring WPI’s continued financial strength, we are writing to announce a series of immediate actions.

Hiring & Staffing: Based on a thorough analysis of all open positions, we are closing 12 vacant positions and pausing 17 staff searches through at least September. Managers with affected positions are aware, and we thank them for working with us on alternative solutions for their areas. Approved searches for faculty and a small number of staff will continue. New hiring requests should be limited to vacancies of mission-critical importance. With fewer staff in some areas, we ask managers to prioritize and to work with their teams to ensure workloads are appropriate and the most important work is sustained. Spending: All non-essential operating and discretionary spending should be paused to the extent possible. For further guidance on how this applies to your area, consult with your cabinet member. All travel, meetings, and conferences over $2,500 now require pre-authorization by a cabinet member via the spend authorization or requisition process in Workday. New travel bookings should serve a clear and essential business purpose such as student recruitment, advancement activities, or presenting at an academic or research conference. Travel for professional development and other discretionary purposes should be evaluated for potential savings, including cancellation, in consultation with your cabinet member. However, scheduled travel with nonrefundable booking may make sense to continue as planned. External sponsorships in any dollar amount now require pre-approval from Provost and Senior Vice President Andrew Sears (academic sponsorships) or Associate Vice President for External Relations & Partnerships Kola Akindele (community sponsorships). Consulting and outsourced services should be reviewed to determine if they can be discontinued. New consulting contracts over $25,000 annually now require cabinet pre-approval. Subscriptions and memberships should be limited to those that serve a critical academic or business purpose. Others should be cancelled or not renewed. All expenses over $25,000 (excluding pre-approved capital expenditures) now require cabinet pre-approval. Overtime should be closely monitored and kept to a minimum. These measures are a beginning and are based on what we know today. Members of the cabinet will continue to work with their divisions and the campus community to identify tangible actions to improve operational cost efficiency in ways that are least disruptive to academic programs, the student experience, and research activity.

Importantly, WPI will continue investing in strategic priorities, including: Building robust enrollment pipelines via regional recruitment, transfer partnerships, and targeted marketing outreach at the graduate level, including in international markets Hiring faculty in high-demand areas to further establish WPI’s leadership in the fields of the future Investing wisely in our infrastructure, including student housing, so that WPI can diversify its revenue and serve its students better We will continue to communicate as information, especially about federal policy, becomes more concrete. We will navigate these challenging times together and with as much transparency as possible. Thank you all for your understanding and dedication to our shared mission.

Sincerely,

Mike Horan, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Andrew Sears, Provost and Senior Vice President

Lauren Turner, Senior Vice President of Talent & Inclusion

Prospective Student Question PhD in Data Science Decisions

I applied to the WPI Data Science PhD program by the deadline, Jan 1 2025, and it said a decision would be made in 6-10 weeks, but no later than April 15th. It is way past the 6-10 weeks time frame, but it hasn't been April 15th yet. Anyone heard back or gotten any decision yet?

Current Student Question Borrowing/Renting Grad Cap and Gown

Obligatory posting for a friend:

Hi! I am an RBE major graduating with a BS this spring. I am searching for alternatives for paying for the grad robes and hat and was wondering if anyone had a pair they were willing to lend or rent out. For reference, I’m 5’ 3” but I’m completely willing to safety pin or wear heels if necessary. I’ll be in Worcester May 10-17, but I can have a friend grab them whenever is needed.
