Look, nobody’s talking about it, but these penguins — these penguins are taking advantage of us like you wouldn’t believe. Tremendous advantage. They’re down there in Antarctica, okay, sitting on all that ice — beautiful ice, the best ice — and they’re laughing at us. They’re laughing! These penguins, they don’t pay anything for defense. We protect their ice, their fish, everything, and what do we get? Nothing. Zero. And they waddle around in their little tuxedos, very fancy, very elite, looking down on everybody. Believe me, I know more about penguins than anybody. People are saying these penguins are stealing our fish. Millions and billions of fish. It’s a disaster what they’re doing to our oceans, absolute disaster. And the fake news won’t cover it, won’t cover the penguin problem. It’s sad, very sad. We need to be tough on penguins, very tough, or they’ll keep taking advantage. Not good!

Several angles:
1.) His diehard base are mostly in devastated former industrial sectors. These people don’t benefit from the modern “city lib” economy (except for being a nanny state burdened upon financially productive blue states). But let’s be real, these people aren’t putting two and two together. As long as Trump promises to bring industry back, and shows he’s “trying”, they will remain diehard.
2.) Digital free banking. Trump and his cronies fanboy all over 1800’s American free banking. They want to bring back free banking but they want to digitize it. They also want to make crypto USD & allow banks to mint their own bank-institutionalized crypto currencies. They want to make the world reliant on digital USD as Fiat petrodollar USD loses its luster.
3.) Self-enrichment for insiders. I can only imagine the number of puts and shorts these fuckers placed on the stock market. After liquidating at the top, of course. They’re cashing out all the way down. On top of his trillions in proposed tax cuts for the rich. Then as it bottoms out they’ll gobble up every fucking asset with their dragon horde.
4.) Shadow alignment with Russia. It’s not just about Trump being an agent or Trump/Putin being friends. The western world won’t tolerate a lawless US. Russia will. If Republicans can cement indefinite power and are willing to turn a blind eye to Russia’s wrongdoings. Russia will do the same for America. A shitfest of crony oligarch quid pro quo. It’ll start gradually with easing sanctions, increasing trade, and eventually a formal announcement of partnership and open/warm relations between the two nations.
5.) Preparing for war, like the other user said.
6.) Using tariffs as a negotiating tool to bring Western nations to the table. Trump wants to replace Breton Woods with the Mar-a-Lago Accord. He wants green nations to inflate their currency above USD, and he wants them to pay for military protection. In exchange he gives tariff relief. In short, he wants the western world to sign on as vassal states of America.

4
u/Zyzz2179 1d ago
You do know doing that breaks the US customs law? Are you insane enough to think that large manufacturing companies (with millions of their product going through the US customs) would blatantly break the law? What are we talking about here?
Even if they can, they need to reroute their shipping to countries that only got the 10% tariffs first before they can go to the US. And yes, the items itself needs to have some transformation. You can’t simply slap a label on a product that comes from China to make it come from Bangladesh. Why would anyone choose an unhabitated island uncapable of receiving hordes of shipments to do that when you have other countries like singapore? There is no logical reasoning to put tariffs on those countries no matter how you spin it.
Tf are we talking about here?

2
u/blacksaltriver 1d ago
No, they did it because the data they are using is faulty and they didn’t do basic checks. Some importers, not connected to Australia or Heard Island, filled forms incorrectly and this is the result. The people Trump is relying on for important economic and international advice are incompetent.

Trump bankrupted casinos. Plural. Business model who's motto is "The house always wins." He bankrupted money printers. Several. But yeah, rich fucks will buy everything when shit bottoms out, just like with covid. One might even suspect that this was the plan all along, to give the American oligarchy positions to buy everything. They will multiply their assets again and you will have even less. And you WILL take it for fear of losing what little you have. They'll make sure you have just enough to lose to make you passive, complicit. This is America. Thank fuck I wasn't born there.

I don't know if anyone has seen this, but this is just how stupid Donald Trump is:
Madagascar: 8.1% Tariff, Trump slapped a 47% Tariff on them.
Vietnam: 5.1% Tariff, Trump imposed a 46% Tariff
Singapore had a 0% Tariff, he imposed a 10% Tariff.
Thailand had a 6.3% Tariff, Trump imposed a 36% Tariff.
The EU only had a 2.7% Tariff and even when it "ranged" it only got as high as 5%. Trump imposed a 20% Tax.
And of course the islands that are inhabitable, he charged the blanket 10% and another island that only has a US Military Base on it, a 10% tariff.
This is the level of stupidity we are working with.

Trump Bankrupted 4 casinos. Casinos are a business model where his customers literally gave him their money to play games of chance that they had overwhelming statistical odds of losing.
I can only think of two plausible explanations for how Trump managed to bankrupt a casino:
1) Wasting vast sums of money on tacky ass, fake gold decorations. And overspending to hire washed up former celebrities as “entertainment.”
2) Rampant corruption and fraud in the form of money laundering for organized crime and Russian oligarchs. Then pocketing his share of the profits rather than reinvesting them into his casinos.
The answer is probably a little of the first. Many other casinos indulge in this kind of lavish spending “to attract customers.” Just not at the same scale as Trump’s idiotic obsession with fake gold decor and has been celebrities…
And a whole lot of the second! Trump is precisely the kind of guy who would think it was “cool” to cozy up to seedy criminals by laundering their money for them through his casinos.
But naturally they would take advantage of his obvious stupidity. And he would undoubtedly have tried to write off his planned expenses related to paying these crooks off at his tables. As the normal, routine lo losses that all casinos face from time to time.

The real tragedy of Trump are the innocent people already clinging to the fringes of society who will be cut loose in the name of “efficiency…”
Also known as devastating budget cuts to critical social safety net programs. In order to o “pay for” the GOP’s Tinkle Down tax cuts for the wealthy. Which amount to the rich pissing in the rest of our faces and calling it a golden shower!

Edit link
“A number of X users have realized that if you ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Grok for an “easy” way to solve trade deficits and put the US on “an even playing field”, they’ll give you a version of this “deficit divided by exports” formula with remarkable consistency.”

Exactly.
Those people see in Trump what they want to see.

He put a Tariff on the island so countries can't use it to circumvent their own Tariffs, or at least I'm assuming. For example: China could set up a corporation there, and then use the island as the country of origin to reduce their tariffs.
It's also possible nobody fucking researched anything and there are that dumb. Who knows.
15
u/Mecanno 1d ago edited 1d ago
That’s not how it works. You can’t just bypass country of origin rules. Customs authorities require detailed documentation to prove where a product is made, including bills of materials, manufacturing records, certificates of origin, and clear descriptions of the factory location and processes performed. That’s what determines the country of origin. Basic processes like repackaging, sorting, or simple assembly don’t change that. If someone wants to claim a different country of origin, they’d have to shift substantial manufacturing operations, and even source raw materials locally. It’s not something that can be faked or worked around easily.
It is in fact idiotic to tariff penguins. It just shows how poorly thought out the whole plan was.

Not them. Conservatives are strangely silent on why he's tariffing an island only inhabited by penguins. Maybe he didn't like their suits?

u/higuy721 1d ago
Sure, you might have though about it, but there is no way this administration has.
-2
u/CreamyChickenSauce 20h ago
I’m not saying I do or don’t support what it happening. However, a bit of thinking makes you realize how if he didn’t tariff every island of oceania, then Australia would start exporting goods from those deserted islands to avoid tariffs on a technicality. Again, I’m being completely neutral here. I know if the tables were turned, we’d find a crappy technicality like that as well
3
u/Twelvecarpileup 14h ago
I think it's great that you're neutral, however I think you are missing some key information. When you export items to a country you are required to submit paperwork on the country of origin which includes bills of materials, manufacturing records, certificate of origin, factory location etc etc. Country of origin is very well defined. As what you are pointing out is a pretty obvious/easy way to get around tariffs, this was considered decades ago and accounted for.
This is why China built factories in other countries to bypass tariffs instead of just shipping it to the country, then shipping to America.

The average person doesn't care about the stock market. Think when you were young. My parents don't know anything about it. Average person cares about jobs and moving up and what their salary looks like. I don't believe the whole stock market directly influencesn jobs thing anymore. It's more of a medium influence. If companies are going to be forced to move back to America it will outweigh the stock market going up 150% in the past 5 months and then dropping 20 or 30%.
21
u/Dave_The_Slushy 1d ago
The average Joe is not as ignorant as you think. The average Joe knows stock prices are tied to their retirement fund and the propect of getting a raise, a bonus, or getting laid off. They might not be as autistic as we are, but they are aware of how stock market movements impact them at a broad level.
Sure the dumbest of the dumb don't understand basic economics, but if they're over 30 they probably remember how the GFC ruined everything for a few years.

Because they weren't taught about the market. On purpose. Because people who don't know how things work, won't be able to use it to climb the ladder.
Also, companies are already closing plants and laying off workers because of the crash. Those 900 people who lost their jobs today care very much. And that was just day 1. When the other countries start swinging back, it's gonna get worse.

Brother, a literal minor understands the stock market better then you. If a business is successful, naturally people will have more secure, possibly higher paying, jobs. How do you think retirement funds get formed out of curiosity? Tax. You know how tax works? If more people and businesses are successful, and making more more, they get more money taken from taxes. More taxes means that social security benefits, among other things, boost, and that affects retirement.
