KRK Rokit 5 G5 vs Adam T7V — what would you choose and why?

Yo! I’m stuck between two monitor options for my home setup and could really use your input: • KRK Rokit 5 Generation 5 • Adam Audio T7V

I mainly produce trap, rage, and 808-heavy stuff, sometimes with guitar melodies and ambient textures. My room is pretty small, about 10–12 m², and I’ll be sitting around 1 meter from the monitors. Some light treatment on the walls.

I know the Rokits are fun to produce on, have DSP features and that classic KRK vibe, but I’ve also heard the T7Vs are way more accurate and detailed — especially in the highs due to the ribbon tweeters.

What do you guys think? Has anyone A/B’d both? Which one gives you better results for mixing/making bangers with heavy low end?

Any help would be fire — I really don’t wanna drop cash and regret it later. Thanks in advance!

How to make clean, lush, cinematic electric guitar tone?

I'm trying to get that clean but lush guitar tone something like the one you hear in Adele's Skyfall from the second verse. Any idea what type of guitar they would have used? And the effects processing to get that tone?

I have a couple of great guitar emulation plugins and amp sims. I also have an old ibanez electric guitar lying around but I'm not much of a player.

If they don’t, I wonder why? Seems weird we have to figure that out for each time? I’m building a template and looking for the best way to do this with multiple libraries.

How to put together a setlist?

Hi there everyone! I have a small garage band with some friends (a drummer, bassist, and i play guitar and sing) and my school is doing a music night thing and we were invited to play a short 15-30 minute set. We mostly play Grunge, but have some holds in punk and metal, etc. (huge NIRVANA fans) anyway, i realized as this would be my first time playing in front of a crowd, what kind of songs should i put where? I'm assuming i start with something faster pace and work my way from there, but I'm quite lost and this is all new to me so any help would be appreciated.

P.S, they also ask if i would like any lighting setups on stage, is there anything i should/shouldnt do?

cheers

Strange silence from Pro Tools

Rearranged my rack unit over the weekend, just moved things around. I’ve opened pro tools to work as I usually do, but I seem to have zero audio.

I’ve checked and defaulted my i/o settings (though nothing has changed from before I rearranged my rack). When I input monitor any audio track, pro tools appears to recognize some kind of feedback as the meter raises to about -10db — yet nothing is heard from my monitors. I’ve tried recording on the same channel, and surprisingly it seems to capture the session audio along with the unheard feedback. If I solo the guitar, it will capture the guitar. When I turn on the click, it captures that too. If everything is muted, only the feedback is captured. Very odd. If I try play back my session regardless of what is soloed or not, nothing is heard.

I am running PT Studio 2024.3.1. My interface is an 18i20. I have no digital rack units, so I wasn’t futzing with anything in the box related to it. When I use Focusrite Control to unsolo DAW playback, my instruments play through just fine, so it must be something w Pro Tools as far as I can tell. SOS!

Transfer plugin licences from broken laptop

My laptop broke and I'm considering just getting a new one since it was starting to get slow and crash a lot. Will I be able to transfer my plugin licences to a new laptop without having to remove the licences from my broken laptop? Or do I just have to get my laptop repaired and hope it lasts another few years.

How do bands like Genesis, or Jacob Collier use chords in a way that's not obnoxious, but nice sounding?

Hi Redditors, Long time writer but I'm never too active on reddit.

I've recently been listening to a lot of Genesis and Jacob Collier (ignore the controversy, for this example, let's just reference his older music), and their music has prompted me with the question: How can they throw chords and modulate so effortlessly? Their melodies and production flow seamlessly and an untrained listener can't even decipher what's going on, just that it works.

In my efforts to try this, it's mostly come out as a garbled mess. I have an intermediate-ish level of music theory and I can get my way around fairly well. I know JC has a huge jazz influence, but I've been studying jazz for years and it still hasn't broken me from my '4 chord shackles'.

I don't want a useless answer i.e. "oh their geniuses... they just do that", does anyone know the steps to take to achieve this? How can I go about my writing in a way that allows it to excel and differentiate from the norm?

Thanks for the help :)

Do you develop a middling idea?

Do you all finish ideas for pieces that seem to have only middling potential?

I go through these stages of development:

  1. I love the originating idea - the first loop.
  2. Next few days, meh.
  3. Next week: It’s truly awful and should be buried. Plus I don’t know where to go next.

Many pieces get abandoned here - my hard drive is littered with them. Occasionally I do push on, and I go through the next few stages:

  1. It’s not as bad as I thought.
  2. It’s finished, I don’t know if it’s good or not, but it’s going on the album.

Do you push on and finish those pieces that seem to have only limited potential? Is it a valuable creative exercise to finish the piece, or do you move on to something else?

Thanks in advance for sharing this aspect of your process.

How to work with a well-known producer

As an independent artist, how do I go about working with a very successful producer (who has worked with several mainstream pop artists)? Do I reach out directly via Instagram or email?

A little bit abt me: I’ve been playing piano for over 10 years, studied music theory for 6 years and have been writing my own compositions for 3 years now. I haven’t released any music, but I write and compose everything (instruments, lyrics, vocals). I’m looking for a producer who can help me produce my first single, and hopefully my first album in the future (which I have all ready).

How do I convince the producer that working together would be mutually beneficial, when I have no connections and no established audience?

Also considering I am close proximity to where the producer is based, do I initiate a meeting? (I’m assuming this is the second step though, the producer first has to be convinced… right?)

*any help would be appreciated 🙏

Double vocals sound jarring when they come in on only the chorus

Hello! My band typically doesn’t double track vocals but have decided that one song in particular really calls for it. However, we like how the beginning of the song sound’s dynamically with just one vocal track and bringing the double in on just the chorus at first sounds jarring because there is no musical break or anything to “soften the blow” if you will. It just does from one lead track to two.

Does anyone have any tips for easing that transition and/or examples of songs that utilize double vocals just on the chorus in this way? Most of the examples I can find use it through the entire song rather than just in certain parts.

Best way to record drum tops to mix with triggers

Hi!

We are recording drums in a couple days. We have triggers for kick and snare and a budget drum mic set we use for rehearsal.

Im about to mic kick, snare and toms with some dynamic mics too, so thats not an issue.

Im curious about how should we record the tops (hihat and crashes) so it will pair well with the modern sounding kick and snare paired with triggers.

Im thinking spaced pair OH and mono room mic.

The thing is, we only have two cheap stick condensers and one large diagram tube condenser.

I would really like to have the hihat recorded properly, so im wondering if i should use the large diagram on hihat and keep the spaced pair for the crashes.

We can add crashes and ride in the edit stage, but programing a good hihat would be pain.

Any advice?
