Question Made it !! What do you do with your old clothes
I am literally curious š§. If I hadn't saved my size 14 from years ago I wouldn't have anything to wear. So do I keep my bigger clothes or donate them?.

Congratulations š¾
I had a bin in the basement with my āskinnyā jeans that now fit beautifully. I even had a vintage dress I bought from a consignment store as motivation. It officially fits š¤
The my 18s & XLs will have to be donated or sold via ThredUp.

I belong to a free group on FB so I have donated them there as well as homeless shelters and local sober living houses and then I do a tax write off for them in April :)

If theyāre in good condition try to sell them! Online is an option or thereās stores that give you some quick money on the spot. Platoās Closet & Uptown Cheapskate work for clothes that are for younger crowds and Style Encore is for more mature styles. See if you have one near you! I typically try to sell and then donate the ones they donāt accept. :)

Iām actually going to put my large jeans into a storage bin in my basement for a while. Iāll put them on sale after a year of being a smaller size on eBay or Poshmark.

I just went through my closet yesterday and had the same issue. I have some lovely clothes that I didnāt pay a high price for because Iām a big bargain hunter. Iām going to donate to our local thrift store.

Congrats!
I have almost all of my clothes from size 2 where I started couple of decades ago to size 20. My plan is to keep one size up as I go down and donate the rest. I have plenty of clothes to fit into as I go down to where I'd like to be.

Also, i was just introduced to Nuuly a clothing rental site. It has been really helpful to augment the Baggy clothes with a couple well fitting pieces. And you only keep for 30 days and then get new stuff. I have been getting 2 jeans, one pant, 3 tops every month. Hopefully soon when i am not a plus size i can try Rent the runway too for their non-formal stuff.

I have to do it in stages - this has been hard for me. Over time Iāve donated a lot. If thereās something Iām on the fence about, I set it aside for a few months to see if I miss it. Ultimately, the longer you keep the weight off (and you will!) the easier it is to let go of some of the bigger clothes.

u/AndrixMk7 Sep 01 '24
I may be overly cautious but I bought space bags and am storing them out in the garage. Will consider selling or donating in the future once I prove to myself I can keep the weight off

Iām down 31lbs. My clothes were often too tight and now too lose but I havenāt replaced much yet, Today I was ironing summer shirts knowing it will be the last time xl will be ironed. I also had a major breast reduction, so these shirts are too big. Iāll replace next spring. These will be donated.

u/Worried-Series-6160 Sep 01 '24
Yes, I started the year in 2xl Tshirts both men's and ladies and bought myself a xl at Walmart the other day and it's too big. Crazy!!

Iāve donated my clothes as they got too big. Feels good to purge your closet and send them off to a new home.

u/oceanguy521 Sep 01 '24
Maybe save half of them. I also worry if my insurance changes, etc
2
u/TerriCnFlorida Sep 01 '24
That was my thoughts too! But after saying that, I was reminded that eventually these insurance companies arent going to be able to deny paying for it...just like with insulin or anything else thats not affordable without selling an organ. Plus Big Pharm is gonna have to climb down off of greed mountain at some point.

u/oceanguy521 Sep 01 '24
True. Luckily My Humana pays for wegovy. But they don't pay for movantik.
2
u/Temporary-Region-947 0.25mg Sep 01 '24
Did you file an appeal after payment on Movantik was denied? I have BCBS but my doctor had to file two appeals for Wegovy to get them to finally pay it. Movantik might need some extra info to them too....and theyre good about playing games with it and just make you continue to "guess" what they need/want to approve it.

u/oceanguy521 Sep 01 '24
Good idea. I think they're kind of slow at my Drs office too. The right hand doesn't know what the left is doing

Donated them. Lots of very nice work clothes that will get a lot more use out of them.

u/believeinxtacy Sep 01 '24
Iāve been selling my clothes on Poshmark and if they donāt sell after a month or so, I take them off Poshmark and donate them to various places around town.

Iāve leaned to add belts to dresses and they still look cute. I am hesitant to get rid of my old clothes in case my insurance stops covering the medication. Itās a tough decision to get rid of so many clothes!

I sold what I could at Platoās closet (Iām down 100lbs and Iāve had to buy a few sizes as Iāve lost and itās not cheap!). I donated everything else to a local charity.
6
u/PattyCakes216 Aug 31 '24
I donate mine to the Salvation Army and business wear to a local Catholic Charity thrift store which supports local children and provides business wear to those looking to join the professional world.
The old clothes became such a burden it was best for me to do something that benefited others.
Sure, for a while I worried about gaining the weight back and needing them. I finally told myself if I gained the weight back then buying new larger clothes would be my personal punishment for gaining the weight back.
Iām seventy pounds down, a Size 6 and have yet to gain back a pound.

I have given mine away so that Iām not tempted to slip back into old habits and gain the weight and wear the old clothes . Having access to them will just be a disaster for me because itās like I would be admitting to myself that inevitably Iām accepting that Iām going to be putting the weight back on.

As someone who had a 40kg weight loss before and regained it all (and some) Iād say keep your favourites. Those who you know you will wear again. I regret giving away most of it. Because nothing worse than feeling shit about your self and then your cloths not fitting.

u/DogDad2Reece Aug 31 '24
I held on to them for about 9 mos just to make sure I was on the right track. Down 50lbs. They are in storage now, but will donate when I do my season change! Congrats. Itās a good feeling buying new clothes (although sometimes expensive).

Iāve gone from a 16/XL to a 12/L, and have the same thoughts as I kept a bunch of 12s and larges that Iām now wearing. (Iām slightly worried that Iām going to get to a 10/M, and I did give those away.) so far Iāve kept the larger clothes, and plan to put them in a bin in an out of the way closet and see what happens in a year when my PA runs out.

Donate them! But if you can try to donate them to a buy nothing group or a place where you know people may use them (shelters or other orgs helping people etc). If you can, avoid donating to goodwill or those big chain thrift shops because they either usually throw it away or charge folks an outrageous amount.

I'm buying ans selling vintage clothing on online marketplaces as I go up and down sizes. Fortunately I love vintage clothes so it isn't a sacrifice for me.. but you tend to break even really because as long as you take good care of them you buy and sell them the same price.
4
u/Feistycat76 Aug 31 '24
For my higher end ones, I sell on Poshmark, recover a but of $ and spend it on nice clothes on Poshmark - that way if I keep losing, I don't feel as guilty having to keep buying new clothes.

u/blackaubreyplaza Aug 31 '24
Iāve ādonatedā a lot of them! The stuff that was just too huge to style. Iāve got about 36 more lbs to lose and some stuff Iām keeping because straight sized clothing is so boring

u/No_Morning9751 Aug 31 '24
YESSSSSS!!!!!! Way to go!!!!! I'm hoping to see that by Christmas. When I do, I'm going to donate to a womens shelter

My self esteem is so bad that all my clothes are old and ugly because I never feel comfortable enough to dress myself the way I would like to. Achieving my goals all clothes will probably be trash..

u/Somber_Goat952 Aug 31 '24
Iām donating everything. I went from size 22 to an 8(!!), and I have full wardrobes in all sizes. Enough is enough.

I know everyone is different - may I ask how long your journey was to GW?

Sure. 52F, 5ā11ā HW 250; Started WW 07/2023 at 245; Started Wegovy 10/2023 at 221; Hit GW 06/2024 at 160; CW 09/01/2024 at 151, and maintaining ~151-154 at 1.7 1x/week.
