Goal to be in Overweight BMI?

Within 20 of my goal weight. This medicine is a life saver. Personally my thought is BMI is very out of whack with overall health. But, is anyone else’s goal to be in the overweight BMI category and stop there? Discussed with my doctor and she said that’s a good place to be overall- almost more so than “normal BMI” as our bodies need some fat to hold on to. Just wondering what others goals are!

Not for me, I'm not going to all this trouble and expense to still be fat at the end of it.

I was slim most of my adult life and know it's doable.

I I’ve gone from a BMI of 36 to 29ish. I feel much better but would like to loose another 20-30 pounds. Get me to the lower end of the ‘overweight’ category.

I am in the same boat. I'm 5'1 and very busty so my BMI has always been skewed. I lost 50 lbs so far and I'm still in the obese range at 37.0 BMI. My Dr said to not worry as how I feel and my health metrics matter most. I plan on losing as much as I can, with a realistic goal in mind. I have 2 large hernias that need repaired due to multitude of abdominal surgeries so that is limiting me a bit. For my height I should weigh about 115. I've never been that thin since puberty. My goal is 175. I'm currently at 200. I went from a 3x shirt 48K bras and size 24 pants to a L/XL shirt, 42H bra and size 12-14 pants.

Yes BMI is off, but saying being overweight because our bodies need fat I find very questionable. Personally I know, that my body is the healthiest around 130lbs which yields an BMI of 21 for me. And back then this was with a lot of muscle mass (strength training for 2h five times a week). All my blood work was perfect, I could set an alarm for when my period would arrive. Generally never felt healthier. So yeah my goal weight will be in that region (maybe lower as I definitely do not have that amount of muscle mass this time around)

Yes! My doctor and I discussed what made sense for me and my body type and it’s still “overweight.” My goal is to still look like myself. I started at 242, am 213, and would like to be 190. 5’7 female.

it depends on your body type I’d say. my bf has a BMI of 26.5, is athletically build and nobody would call him overweight. I am petite, now actually down to a BMI of 24 but still have 35-36% body fat which is just too much, even for women. Obv sth very low means loose skin, but targetting 22 BMI while working on that body fat.

You might surprise yourself. If you are planning to stay on this med permanently, your goal weight may pick you. I have ended u with a much lower weight than I originally thought possible, since I’m not overeating anymore. It’s not like the diets of yore where you’d be struggling to stay on program and then fall off after a little while..

My goal is considered overweight for my height, so yes, but it’s close to the line. I figure I’ll get to 140 goal and then settle around 150 happily.

My current goal is in the obese category still, but I’m doing this in bite sized pieces. (Pun intended)

No. My goal is to be 22-24% body fat, which is considered fitness for a female.

I got down into an overweight BMI, and I lost 55lbs to get there, and am pretty happy with it, but my doctor told me that she wants a lot more of my visceral fat gone. She is more focused on my abdominal circumference than on my BMI.

My goal is the top end of an overweight bmi. I’m tall and broad. My doctor and I are calling it a happy weight. I feel happy in my body and can do what I want and it’s sustainable and maintainable.

Yeah. I've always been big, so my goal is overweight me in high school. So about anywhere between the 75kg-85kg range and I'll be content with that :) Also whatever gets me fitting onto rollercoasters comfortably lmao

I recently got into Normal BMI and I never ever thought I'd get here.

I am at goal and am about 10 lbs overweight still. I’m happy here and my doctor is thrilled. My resting heart rate is in the 50s, blood pressure 115/70, cholesterol normal, look and feel good. I had gotten about 6 lbs lighter than I am now but it was horrible to maintain. I’m happy here and can maintain without micromanaging my every move (I track my food and exercise a lot but I eat a cookie or a piece of pizza without worry).

I’ve never been a normal weight even as a child so this is a great accomplishment for me and my health!

After 4.5 months, my BMI went from 27 to 24.9. Which is at the end of normal. My goal is 23 so I still have some ways to go for personal goals, but everyone has been telling me I look amazing

u/baybay57 1d ago

My goal weight I’ll be in the lower part of overweight and I’m ok with that because I’ve never been small.

I’m 5’4 and 152 lbs. if you go by the BMI chart, I am overweight, but I wear a size 6 and workout 5 days a week. Go by how your clothes fit. The scale and that chart are extremely deceptive!

My goal weight will still put me in the obese category. I’m 5’6 and aiming for 200-210 which probably sounds insane to most people. A normal BMI for me would be 149lbs and that is my non fat body weight. I have a muscular build and carry a lot more weight than most people would assume based on my size. I have always been 30lbs heavier than my friends who were the same size as me. I had weight loss surgery 10 years ago and lost 120 lbs. My lowest weight was 210 and I was a size 12/14. That looked and felt right to me. I got hurt and gained about 40lbs and the wegovy has helped me get off 30 of that. I’m about to start 1.7 and if I do somehow make it below 200 fine but I will be very happy just to be back where I was.

Similar for me honestly. I have a bit less body mass so I’m aiming a tiny bit lower than you, under 200 lbs. I’d be super thrilled if I could get down to like 180 but I don’t think I could maintain that as it would be on the low end of body fat for me. I carry a lot of muscle mass so I think the number is a little less important but man does it feel weird to aim for a number that is so “high”. And I sound a little defensive too, like oh I’m big boned! Which I’m not claiming just a larger body mass than what’s accounted for in general population.

I doubt that I’ll even get as low as ‘overweight’.

My goals are more functional. After a fall about a year ago my legs have been problematic so that walking too much hurts. This was the reason for beginning. I figured that less weight on my legs would be helpful (still in the pool and working with physio to strengthen). I’d also like to have less concerns about fitting into chairs when out and about. So while it’s great to be seeing the scale going down for me it’s more about function.

When I spoke to doc he was keen for me to lose 20kg in 6 months. I lost 4kg in the 2 months before I started and 5.7kg in the last month. Given my starting weight was very high 20kg doesn’t seem like nearly enough. If I lose 60kg I’ll still be considered obese but I’m sure I’ll be a lot more mobile which is what matters to me.

I'm not sure. In my 20s, whenever I stopped dieting I'd end up 8lb heavier than my "healthy" BMI. I'm debating aiming for that as I'm hoping not to need to take wegovy for life, and it feels more sustainable (although I'm now in my 40e).

4

u/anarchadelphia 1d ago

Yeah I just want to exit the obesity range.

2

u/sickiesusan 1d ago

My GW is to get into the ‘healthy’ category of the BMI range. I’ve another 18lbs to get there (down 117lbs).

I’ve been at my goal weight BMI 26 and maintenance for past 12 months. I don’t look good skinnier

2

u/Electronic_Bluejay14 1d ago

Frankly I want to be in the healthy BMI, but for my height that’s 129 lbs which still feels far away from me lol

3

u/delicatemicdrop 1d ago

it's a fine goal to start with but personally if you lose that much and the side effects aren't terrible and you can handle it, why wouldn't you want to lose whatever it allows you to? for me, my joint pain is/was so bad (not directly due to weight but it never helps) and now that i've lost 100 pounds i want to try like hell not to have it. i started in obese bmi and am now at the lower end of normal.

u/2muchcaffeine4u 1d ago

I mean at a non-overweight BMI you do have fat still. You have enough fat to function. So that being your reason is pretty silly.

u/Vueluv02 1d ago

BMI is being challenged as not being the be all end all. There needs to be a better way

1

u/sambr011 1d ago

Maybe so but it's what we have now and what the medical community and insurance companies follow, no?

1

u/Vueluv02 1d ago

Unfortunately so

u/lizfromthebronx 1d ago

I’m maintaining around 25 pounds over what a normal BMI is for my height. Typically around 28.

Based on my build/shape/musculature etc, even another 10 pounds down is too low for my own preferences on how I look, so I have no desire to even attempt to get to “normal”.

2

u/Last_Ask4923 1d ago

My goal is to hit the sweet spot where I e lost enough that I am healthly and feel good about how I look, but also that insurance continues to cover my meds lol

1

u/d1zzymisslizzie 2.4mg 1d ago

Are you sure you're insurance stops at a certain weight? Most insurance covers maintenance indefinitely as long as you maintain the weight loss and don't go into an unhealthy underweight BMI, I know that's how mine is

1

u/Last_Ask4923 1d ago

I’m actually not sure, I see the Dr in a few weeks and am due another auth, so I may check before then.

u/Auraluka 1d ago

Yes. My 'official' goal is to reach BMI 25, but I am not going to starve myself for that. I have gotten below 27 by now and I am super happy with this result. The weight still comes off, but very slowly and that is fine. If I would plateau somewhere between 27 and 25 that would also be fine with me. I'll just let my body lead me to my setpoint weight.

1

u/Plastic_Platypus3951 1d ago

My physician said he would no longer be concerned about my weight once I got below 27 BMI or rather the weight that charts as <27 for me. I have gone a bit below and that is fine.

4

u/More-Mail-3575 1d ago

That was my first major goal. Then I moved to a lower bmi. And finally reached normal bmi. But it felt too low for me so now I hover in the bottom range of overweight and it feels right to me. I’ve been in maintenance for over a year now.

5

u/Peace-out13 1d ago

yep, me! I'm down about 53lbs. my goal weight is around 5lbs into the overweight category. I'm 6 lbs away from that and I feel great and I think I look okay for my age. I don't want to be super skinny, not my goal. I just don't want to be how I was before.

2

u/TBallAllStar 1d ago

Absolutely normal. Even if I somehow convert any body fat that I have into muscle at my current weight, I would like to ideally gain some mass in those areas rather than look lean. That would require me to jump back into the ‘overweight’ BMI and I’m a-ok with that.

u/DaCozPuddingPop 1.7mg 1d ago

I haven't even looked at my BMI - I chose to use body fat % as my 'goal' instead - it's a much better indicator of where you are, imho.

u/blackaubreyplaza 1d ago

My goal was not a certain BMI but when I started my BMI was 50. Now it’s 22

Yes. I’m 7 kilos off being overweight and I’d be delighted to reach that :). It just won’t go.
