Slight change to a longstanding rule about union politics

There's no getting around it, the US and Canada are where the majority of our users appear to be located, and both countries workforces are facing a significant threat from company owners, corporate boards, and deregulation of government bodies. The end goal for those folks is to first strip the unions, and then all worker rights from legislation. This isn't for all jurisdictions, but it is clearly happening at a wide level.

Non-union and Unions alike are at risk. In a publicly traded company your managers are LEGALLY beholden to the shareholders over you. They are required, by law, to turn a profit for the board. As long as any settlements to your family are lower than the potential profit of your output, you are irrelevant to them and only hold value as any other tool to be used and replaced at will.

Please discuss unions, union politics and how to manage in a hostile workplace, because we are staring 1892 in the face all over again.

How to keep these "nipples" from happening with Mig welding?

Post image

I'm using a good quality Miller welder with shield gas and every now and then these little nipples grow out of the weld. I see them growing even after ive stopped the actual welding. Why does this happen and what can I do about it?

Turns out a 1/4” grinding wheel moving at Mach fuck will eat through a glove pretty quick. Got lucky it wasn’t bad, coulda been much worse

Was holding trigger with left hand and pressing on guard to apply pressure with the right, and my hand rolled a wee bit too far over

Am I just making excuses or is this a legit concern?

I was doing an overhead bend test.

And i did my first two passes, they came out Ok but when i tried to do the middle pass, i noticed the whole place was shaking. My plate was tacked on a tube. the bottom of the tube is welded on to a table, but the top of the tube is unattached to anything.

The people on the booths next to me were banging their plates to clean the slag. And as a result of the shaking, I couldn't get a single pass properly. The fking rod got stuck again, and again, and again. I eventually got exhausted. My saftey glasses got foggy because i was sweating and exhausted from having to clean the overhead slag and start again. I couldnt see anything.

I’ve been welding for about 6 months now and decided to weld my first exhaust, thought I’d show you guys how it turned out.

The two stainless tubes that are already oxidised were previous pipes on this bike I just added to them

Pretty stoked how it came out

Was wondering if you guys could give me any tips for when I weld my car exhaust cause now I have the sudden urge to do it.

For around $100 in electrical components and slides, and using material and parts we had laying around, our lead fabricator made a track welder.

When I do exhaust, I do long tacks instead of a constant bead. I will start and stop with a half second in between. Is this an acceptable way to do it? I’ve just found that if I turn the power up more and do short welds together I get better penetration without the risk of blowing through. Maybe that’s just my inexperience. I’ve been using the shops snap-on welder which I don’t really like because less fine adjustment (only 8 power settings) and no post flow.

Critique Please Was the High Schooler/Intern’s Weld That Bad

Thumbnail

A family of large birds were landing a few ~100’ tall poles. A perch deterrent manufacturer was ~6 weeks out on their product, so we gave a local fab shop the cut sheet and asked them to make it. The first two pictures were welds a high schooler/intern. The fab shop pulled the intern off the project because of poor workmanship and an experienced welder completed the welds in the last two pictures.

With inexperienced eyes, I do not know why the interns welds were so bad. Can someone explain?

Need Help Need advice from the old money.

Someone tell me if this post is against the rules.

19 year old still somewhat green high school grad here. I've been working at my first shop for just over 9 months now and I'm starting to become more and more bitter and disgruntled as time goes on and im starting to think I'm getting fucked with.

The short version is it seems like management ay the company I work for is underpaying me and my foreman is holding me back from learning anything that would both make me of more value and get me out of the general laborer hole.

I want some advice from the experienced guys on whether or not it's time I start looking for another shop.

If you want the long version, ask.

(The pictures are what my welds come out looking like when they decide to let me weld. Note that I've been certified to weld and my job title was changed to welder, they're just barely letting me do any welding or learning how to fit.)

Critique Please Practice MIG Torch

I am new to welding and r/welding, not sure if something like this has already been posted. I came up with this training wheels setup to help me with torch posture/positioning in between booth times. Anyone ever done something like this, is it a waste of time/effort? I found a cheap torch and zip tied a pen about 3/8” from the tip of the pen.

Photographer looking for proper eyewear.

Upvotes

Hey all. I picked up a couple of gigs shooting some welding procedures and I’m in need of some low profile protective eyewear.

My mask is too bulky and the hand held lenses are too much to handle while shooting.

Could anyone suggest a pair of sunglasses style protection to avoid flash burn.

Some sort of cast aluminum, never tried that before. Got lucky, casting was of decent quality so I was not to bad to manage.

Opinions on mig gas cylinder

Hey fellas, so my Primeweld Mig 180 is on it's way and I should have it this upcoming week!

I want to run solid wire in it with 75/25 gas but here in my city there is like 2 suppliers, Air Liquide and Linde.

The biggest tank I can buy is only a 55 cf one and that is going for $400 and would cost roughly $85 to fill. But I plan to be welding a couple hours a day at least just practicing and doing small fab projects like building a welding cart and welding table and not sure if that's large enough.

I'm not sure if I'd be better off just leasing a larger bottle like an 80 or 125 cf and getting it filled cheaper and less often or buy the smaller one and have more upfront cost but prob cheaper in the long run.

I've been looking online, there is no used bottles anywhere around me.

Ripped an inadequate factory weld apart by hand, got motivated to finally use the semi-synergic MIG welder setup I picked up four months ago, tested how it behaved with different settings on scrap metal, tripped the breaker a lot (subject to replacement). I also grinded half of the stub off and filled the hole in on the other side

Welding together a cheap trampoline?

Has anyone else ever put up with the cheap $300 trampolines that wind up flying around your neighborhood in storms or high winds? Would welding them solid be a solution or same problem worse consequences?
