Broke two ribs day before a concert I looked forward to for months.
Broke my 8th and 9th rib last night. The pain is awful. Like pain that makes me go “oooohhh fuck!” I’m so sad and disappointed in myself. Tomorrow I was to see a concert I was so excited to see. Waiting months for the day. Will I go? Not sure. But if I do, I’ll be sitting in the back wishing I could be in the pit. Probably drinking water because I can’t drink on NSAIDS and Tylenol. Which is probably best because this happened while drunk. Wont be drinking for a long time. A sign from the gods!

I used to work as a security guard at a concert venue. You wouldn't believe the amount of times that somebody who doesn't drink often, goes all out and then something super messed up happens. Like it's almost a thing with alcohol? One of my weirder friends used to say there was a kinda demon attached to alcohol and to different drugs. When I was younger I thought he was crazy. Now that I'm an old fart, kind of see his wisdom back then. It's not a literal demon... but there is something weird about it. People who only drink a few times a year and get totally wasted when they do, are the ones who would trip down the stairs and smash their faces. Or fall off of things or have other bad really crazy stuff happen. The full-out alcoholics who drink often can handle their s*** because they drink it so much. It's the weekend warriors who get hurt more.

I went to a festival at a brewery recently and the average age of the crowd was 40+. It was really obvious that a lot of the people were having their one big night away from the kids. So many guys fighting and barely being able to stand up. I hate to think how bad the hangovers the next day must have been.

I was drunk in the ER. Drunk when it happened. So I guess they put that? I was walking up a staircase and lost my footing. Super embarrassing.

Back in November I thought my cat got out. So I went running out after her. It was pouring down rain. I put my crocs on and ran outside. I forgot that my stairs get super slick when it rains. Plus crocs aren’t exactly known for their traction. My foot hit the top step and went out from under me. My body proceeded to follow my foot down the stairs through the air. I only have 5 steps. But it felt like it took forever for me to hit at the bottom.
When I landed, I landed on my back on the bottom steps. The air was knocked out of me. I had never been in so much pain. I had lost a croc during my flight.
So there I am in the mud rain is pouring down around me. Crawling on my hands and knees. I’m in my underwear and a rain coat and one croc. No breath in my lungs trying to yell for my cat.
The cat didn’t actually get out and I still have rib pain in April. Good times.

You drank so much that you acted a fool. Some people can drink and still answer questions. You abused the substance and the end result was what everyone else had to endure.
They aren't calling you an alcoholic, just a substance abuser. If that makes you feel better.

I skipped an epic concert 30 years ago on doctors advice. Never again. IMO, go. Have friends protect you from mosh pits and contact and well, if NFL players can play on busted ribs, well, your call dude.

Solid point. I’ll evaluate tomorrow.

u/JoleneGoFuckYourself 1d ago
I completely smashed my face on concrete like two weeks before a concert in a bike accident (almost broke two fingers, bandages all over my hand and face). Still went, ended up front row, held hands with the artist for a whole damn song. Don't u dare skip it!

u/Chemical-Composer898 1d ago
Thank you! I needed to read this. 99% going! I was feeling sorry for myself but that tide is turning.

u/Chemical-Composer898 1d ago

u/GordonRammstein 1d ago
I had a broken collar bone and ended up in the mosh pit at a Dead Kennedys show. Some dude jumped off a balcony and landed on my bad shoulder. I had to literally fight my way out and the final boss was some big dude blocking the stairs who kept pushing me back into the pit. I ended up punching the guy in the face and security dragged us both away(I was not in trouble, I spent the rest of the show safely on a balcony lol).
One on hand, it was the most excruciating pain ever. On the other, I checked off a bucket list show and have a decent story to go with it

I broke my rib, unbeknownst to me, falling down the stairs the day before seeing one of my favorite bands! I was in the pit the next day, dancing, jumping around, having a fun time. I definitely felt it that night and the next day. A few days later I went to the hospital and found out I broke it. I don’t regret going at all and would do it again. You never know if you’ll get the chance to see the band live ever again and you don’t have to be active and in the pit to enjoy it. Hope they gave you some pain meds even with the alcohol abuse dx they gave you :(
25
u/DMG29 1d ago
It’s alright to still go to the event, but do NOT listen to that commenter. You should absolutely avoid the mosh, even with friends.
Re-injuring your broken ribs won’t just be extremely painful, you are at risk of further damage and the potential of collapsing a lung.
Go to the concert and have fun. Just be careful and avoid any activities that have the potential to cause enough impact to further damage your ribs.
7
u/blabla524 1d ago
Ask for ADA accommodation, they will hopefully have an area for you to not get crowded.
11
u/Anonymoose_1106 1d ago
I saw Motorhead a week after having my hand crushed and two fingers amputated. No regrets.
If you want to go, go. Worst case, leave early. Beats regretting not going.
2
u/veganexceptfordicks 1d ago
You can call ahead to the box office and ask for seating because you have an injury, at least if it's at a bar or venue that's not a stadium. Your husband might have to stand behind you instead of next to you, but you might be a lot more comfortable than if you're constantly worried someone's going to hit your side.

u/MeanSeaworthiness995 1d ago
NFL players have world-class doctors and treatments and often get addicted to painkillers.

u/MaliciousTent 1d ago
Not much can be done for ribs. If OP saw doc and no operation, it's just rest and no mosh pits and will recover with time.
The regret I have, took years to sink in what epic concert I missed - Pearl Jam and Nirvana.
2
u/MeanSeaworthiness995 1d ago
Not much can be done but their doctors can take care of them (on the team’s dime) if their broken ribs displace and puncture a lung. I wouldn’t want to be in a crowded concert where you’re likely to get bumped or squeezed between people, personally. Broken ribs were one of the most painful injuries I’ve had, and I’ve had a lot. But it’s up to OP 🤷♀️ It would suck to miss a concert you’ve been looking forward to, but it would also suck to be in pain all night and not really be able to enjoy it - or worse, to worsen your injuries.

u/AsOsh 1d ago
From experience: don't laugh, or need to cough, or breathe too deeply, or sneeze. (Semi joking- I broke multiple ribs then got pneumonia, most miserable few months ever.)
I found wrapping myself with kinetic tape helped, (not too tight) as it somewhat stabilized the breaks
46
u/Chemical-Composer898 1d ago
They gave me a breathing thing that I have to do. To prevent pneumonia. I’m so scared when I will need to sneeze. I don’t sneeze once. My sneezing sounds like a machine gun. Getting all sweaty and horrified with the ridiculousness of it. It’s like a party no one wants to attend. Sneezing for me sucks!!

u/InsaneInTheDrain 1d ago

I've never broken a bone, but I've dealt with a lot of people who have and I think ribs are the worst. Arms, legs, collarbones, hips, and most other things, you can just get bolted back together and start on PTO. Ribs, unless you really fuck them up, you just have to let heal.

u/DrTitanium 20h ago
I know you’re commenting/joking on the pain but just wanted to say - OP you absolutely need to breathe deeply. About 5-10 deep ones an hour. Hurts awfully, but it’s necessary to prevent chest infection developing. Helpful to do it on the hour every hour when you’re awake. The breathing thing OP is talking about is almost certainly an incentive spirometer.
Have broken them too, it really sucks. Have pain relief on your bedside locker so when you wake you can take some in prescribed/over the counter guidelines dose.

u/FishNDChick 1d ago
Not sure if this is after you have been fully screened inside and out, but we also use the term "alcohol abuse" in the medical laboratorium/clinical diagnostics when we see abnormalities in the blood that indicate liver damage/malfunction combined with the symptoms and behaviour of a patient described by doctors. So its maybe not JUST you being actively drunk and maybe having alcohol in your blood, but if they ran a standard bloodtest your liver values could have been off too due to excessive drinking. Severe liver damage can also happen if you binge alcohol every few months. Moderation is key.
Take care though, broken ribs is no walk in the park. Hope you get well soon.

Based on the blood pressure, alone, you're treating your body like a trash can. Getting so drunk you hurt yourself, as an adult, isn't fun.

u/Scarlet-Witch 21h ago
Acute pain and stress can easily spike your BP. This reading wouldn't surprise me at all for someone in legitimate pain.
My BPs trend 90s-110s/60s-70s. Never been anywhere close to 120/80 until I found out some extremely stressful news right before a follow up appointment (literally in the waiting room) and my BP that visit was ~134/84.
3
u/1GamingAngel 16h ago
This. I injured my foot last week and went to urgent care for X-rays. I check my BP every day. It hovers in the 115/75 area but was 165/89 in urgent care. I was super concerned but the nurse blew it off, said “it’s the pain.”

Could be elevated from pain from broken ribs, or the alcohol usage. Def would get a cuff to keep at home and take measurements and record them. If consistently high, worth talking to your primary care about starting BP meds.

Omg, good luck getting getting that off your record FOREVER.
I went to the ER because I was in INTENSE PAIN which ended in me needing surgery. That said, my blood pressure was elevated. I now have hypertension on my record, which is so frigging annoying because I actually have hypotension. But everytime I go in, it's back on there. My blood pressure is 90/60. It's not like I'm self reporting it or something.
Glad you are ok! But while I wouldn't take my own advice back in the day, be careful. Broken ribs can lead to other problems when they don't heal properly. But younger me would have brushed that advice off too. Be safe!
4
u/Whaterver7 1d ago
I hate the way anyome that see's you once can fuck with your records forever. I'm afraid of veins so I cried a little and my BP spiked when I got blood taken in the ER. The dude wrote hypertension and anxiety on my record when I have neither chronically. So every appointment I get asked about my anxiety that I don't have, which makes me sound combative when I explain that. I also generally have hypotension and they always say they'll correct it but don't lol.

Just picking up on something. Alcohol abuse can make your bones more fragile and prone to breaking. So I'd query if your doc thinks you have more fragile than expected bones, could be something as simple as a vitamin deficiency. But is worth following up.

For what it’s worth, I got blackout drunk, fell and sprained my arm right before a concert too. A short 3 months later I got blackout drunk again, fell and hit my head so hard I gave myself whiplash, in front of about 200 colleagues and subordinates. I haven’t had a drop of alcohol since. I’m not telling you what to do, but I know cutting out alcohol has improved my life in ways I can’t even count. I actually remember events now and enjoy concerts SO much more now.

In a similar situation. Having bad back pain due to putting off maintenance, so to speak.
There is a music festival in OH (I live in TX) called Sonic Temple I've been looking forward to May 9th and 10th. Bought plane tickets, completed a six month payment plan for the festival tickets. And now I'm hoping I can get rid of this back pain so I can still go.

Sorry to hear about the ribs. Take the over the counter pain meds and take it easy. You could try to use a pack of frozen corn or peas to reduce swelling if you have any. If you cough, have a soft pillow nearby that you can hold to your ribs, it definitely helps. I suffered 10 fractured ribs (all on left side, 1-10) in a road bike accident a few years ago. Hurts like heck. I wish you a speedy recovery!.

Message the venue and tell them what happened and if it is possible for you to join the wheelchair platform. They are usually happy to help thinking of a solution. Broke my shoulder last year right before festival season and was able to attend at least one this way. Keeps you out of danger of people bumping in to you, and the view usually is great!

It took me blacking out to learn to take it easy on the booze
I lose my wallet, which contained 500$ in cash maybe more.
I don’t remember much,
but I was told that I punched my friend’s air conditioner and then denied it. He was in the room and witnessed me doing it.
On top of that, I also tried to hit on a woman that I would have never normally hit on. I also kept trying to do back flips.
They took me to my parents’ house, and dropped me off apparently, I tried to bunk with my parents and laughed at my dog for 20 minutes.
Boy did I feel stupid AF the next day I found my wallet no money in it of course lol

I was a passenger in a car that was tboned in November four hours into a trip I flew across the country to see a band. Car flipped a few times. Fractures in my lower back, concussion from losing consciousness exiting the car and hitting me head in the fall. Was in the hospital for 36 hours, put the clothes I wore in the accident, tightened the back brace, and went to the show. It was rough and I asked for accomodations and spent a lot of it sitting in the lobby. But was happy I pushed ahead with it. If you're up for it maybe make a go of it and take it easy.
