Community HSC Winnipeg nightmare stay
Health science centre in Winnipeg has had a lot of serious issues in the past. Everything from people dying in the waiting room of the ER, to amputations going wrong.
I am a female cancer patient and my experience at health science centre in Winnipeg was horrendous. My surgeon and his team were amazing, however, my stay at the hospital was a nightmare.
At first, I was put in a ward room with many patients. It was more of a zoo. Patient screaming at the nurses because they wanted fentanyl. Patients blasting music at 4 AM, and making loud phone calls at all hours. It was very chaotic and I begged to be given a semi private room.
It got worse! A few days later I was finally placed in a semi private room but with a male patient, who was a drug addict. He brought street drugs into the hospital and locked himself in the shower and passed out with the water running for 2+ hours. He could have been seriously injured or dead inside, but no one took action!
The nurse sat in the corner of my room crying for over two hours when she found out the patient had locked himself in the bathroom. She did not call security. She did not ask for the door to be opened. She did nothing except sit there and cry. When the patient finally came out of the washroom, the nurse just tucked him back in bed and didn’t say anything more about it.
No one talked to me about the incident. No one moved him to another room, or offered to move me to another room. I didn’t feel safe at all.
It was the most disturbing/bizarre experience I’ve ever had in a hospital and I hope to never have to go back there again.
Is this how cancer patient should be treated in Manitoba? After escalating this incident to several people, I’ve come to the conclusion that no one cares.
I literally just want share my experience because I don’t want things like this to be brushed off by our government and our hospitals. Enough is enough. Thanks for reading.

Community Filling potholes
It’s hard to see in the photos but I woke up to this today, and while I am happy the city IS filling the potholes on my street, they just dumped the stuff in there and didn’t flatten it at all? some of them are like 2-3” above street level. Is that normally how they do this? I thought they are supposed to flatten them while they’re still hot?

Satire/Humour NDP Speech "Eye Roll" girl at LiUNA last week

Ask Winnipeg The Halo apartment.
Just wondering, anybody can share their experience at this place? Overall from the reviews on Google, it seems poorly managed. And there was a guy who said(on my other Reddit post) he was in there and had a neighbor who was a prickly asshole making loud bangs in the middle of the night.

Ask Winnipeg Anyone know anything about the units in 167 Bannatyne?
I've got a friend who's drooling over those units with the arched windows. Apparently they're all individually owned. Anyone have a connection with an owner who might be looking for tenants eventually?

Ask Winnipeg Where to buy groceries without giving billionaires more money?
Basically exactly what the title says. I've heard FoodFares are locally owned but I'm confused by this since they are a chain. I've stopped using Amazon, I'm avoiding Walmart, but I still primarily shop at Superstore and that feels like still making the rich richer. Suggestions?

Community A sincere apology
Using a throw away account for this. To anyone in Winnipeg and surrounding areas who receives home care, has family members receiving home care or is waiting for home care, I am so so very sorry. We were notified in December that the scheduling office was going to be moved to a centralized office setting with 24/7 support. We were told that this change would improve effeciency, more clients could be seen and staff would be able to call a number and speak to a live knowledgable person. We were told to stay positive and that this would be a great change. This past week has been truly horrendous and there are so many who want you to know that there are people behind the scenes hurting because we know how bad things are right now and disgusted to know that this was entirely preventable. It has only been 8 days and the damage has been done. You and your loved ones are not just a number to us, we wish we could have stopped this, we tried. We weren't perfect, people died because of our collective mistakes and miscomnunication . Vulnerable people have been waiting for months for care and their family members are suffering severe caregiver burden because of that due to staffing issues. But this change didn't have to happen. There were many alternative ways we could have addessed these issues. It didn't have to get this bad, I am so so very sorry. Edited: a few words

Food Any new Second Cup locations coming?
I'm happy to support our small local places, there are so many options and they provide great service. Buttttt they can't compete with Tim's or Starbucks on the same level, plus they make some good stuff. I'm wondering if they have expansion plans in the city?

Politics "Well, Your question is false.." Pierre Poilievre answering whether his government will align with the US or not.
bsky.appIn an interview, Pierre Poilievre declares a question to be false, when asked if conservative Premier Danielle Smith was accurate in her assertion, that Poilievre's federal conservatives would "align with the US's new direction" or not.

Sports (Other) Any Cycling Groups in Winnipeg?
Hello,
Me (32M) and my wife (32F) are moving to Winnipeg on July 1st and would like to join any existing cycling group.
Our main goals are to make friends in the new city and have long, slow, and ideally habitual rides. But I'm open to tagging along on any existing rides outside business hours.
I am also interested in any info that you might find relevant, such as where to find trails, what to seek/avoid, places to see, etc.

Just a shot from a hotel I stayed at downtown. What’s the oddest business that was originally in any of these buildings, that would never exist today?

Ask Winnipeg Repairing 100 year old windows
I've been googling to not much success. We have just bought a 1915 tudor house and are now faced with the decision of either replacing all the windows or dealing with decades of painted over seals and cut cables.
I really love the look of the original windows and the thought of removing them fills me with fear, but I also have not been able to find any company that repairs these kind of windows.
Does anyone have someone they can recommend in the city? If we can't, we'll likely remove them and replace them.

Food Just a shout-out to Soda Exchange, local company
These guys offer an amazing service.
I go through a TON of carbonated water, and they deliver refills to my door for a lot less than picking refills up at the store, and they're local and Canadian-owned.
With orange man and his tariffs, I want to support local more than ever, and I'm glad I'm not feeding my money into some US corp just so I can have some damn bubbly water.
The price is so good I wondered if they were under-filling the cylinders to cheat me. I weighed them and they're all within a few grams of those I'd bought from Safeway and other official retailers.
Anyhow - if you've been hesitating on a soda stream, go get one and buy extra bottles and refills from these guys, their service seriously is terrific. For health reasons, you should consider just drinking bubbly water, instead of sugar water/ pop. It's just as tasty, and your kidneys will thank you.
Thank you for attending my Co2 Ted Talk.

Ask Winnipeg How to report an unlicensed and illegal home based food business effectively
I work in food industry and it’s frustrating to see how many home based caterers are operating without licenses, inspections, or food safety oversight, yet they’re taking business from restaurants that do follow the rules. Who pay taxes, carry insurance, pass inspections, and meet strict regulations. These folks don’t, and they undercut prices because they have no overhead or accountability. It’s not just unfair but a lot of peoples health is at risk.
I was recently invited to an event where the food is coming from one of these home caterers. This person is a banker by profession and calling himself “the best caterer in Winnipeg.” I know deals like this are mostly done on WhatsApp and through personal references, so it’s rare that I’ve been able to gather actual evidence against a home-based caterer. I know this isn’t a lot of dough for CRA to investigate but is there a way I could effectively report them to perhaps a food inspector or someone at public health?
