YOU CAN GET AN EXTENSION BUT YOU NEED TO FILE FOR AN EXTENSION!

56

u/Yo_momma_so_fat77 22h ago

This! I has to do last year. I use turbo tax. I went to the top of the app and scrolled down and I pressed a button . You got this

55

u/hexagon_heist 18h ago

And the extension applies to filing your tax return BUT NOT TO PAYING YOUR TAXES IF YOU OWE MONEY. YOU MUST PAY WHAT UOU OWE BY APRIL 15th OR THERE WILL BE LATE FEES AND STUFF

19

u/Rosaluxlux 17h ago

Go ahead and guess, if you pay too much they give it back when you file

-15

u/Liizam 21h ago

Don’t do that. IRS might not exit soon so if you want a refund do it asap

u/Lambamham 23h ago

I’m very proud to say I panicked when I saw this and then immediately remembered I did in fact send all my tax stuff to a tax guy last week.

87

u/llamasarefunny56 23h ago

Just turned mine in an hour ago! First time getting it in on time since I became an adult!!!

21

u/spudmcloughlin 21h ago

same!!! i didn't even have to use a guy! the trick is to do it when you're procrastinating on something else

16

u/thatotheramanda 21h ago

I can’t fathom anything that I would procrastinate harder on than taxes 😅

3

u/spudmcloughlin 21h ago

ok real i didn't consider that 😅 for me it's exams

1

u/curmudgeoner 18h ago

Exactly. This is the thing. I'll get other things done and continue avoiding this.

2

u/youaintbad 4h ago

This is the way.

14

u/Lambamham 23h ago

Good job OP!

1

u/Wavesmith 16h ago

That’s amazing! Well done you!!

98

u/awildaloofarebel 23h ago

Thank you 🥹 I’m in paralysis mode bc I quit my job 6 months ago & am not collecting unemployment but moved & thought I’d have an income plan by now so I don’t want to confront myself or the government :) but within 11 days……… I shall

32

u/rock_kid 23h ago

I want to give you encouragement as someone who had a tax hurdle that was solved by literally one phone call to a very nice rep, it's easier than our brains allow us to feel like it is to break through some of these hurdles.

You can do this. And the sooner you start, the sooner you can put down your anxiety about it.

Sending hugs ♥️ it won't be this way forever

11

u/Lucky_Leven 18h ago

it's easier than our brains allow us to feel like it is to break through some of these hurdles.

You put it beautifully, thank you. I need to remember this for later.

14

u/ancj9418 22h ago

Remember that payment plans exist too! If you find yourself owing money, the process to apply for a payment plan is all online and very simple.

7

u/Yo_momma_so_fat77 22h ago

Just ask for extension . You’re good. Think that gives you till October. I did it last year thru turbo tax

1

u/kiwigoalie 9h ago

But you still have to pay, right?

48

u/dani_-_142 22h ago

I’ll do it on April 14 just like every year.

21

u/pilar09 19h ago

I was gonna say, if anyone needs me at 11:48pm on April 14…

7

u/dani_-_142 11h ago

I used to do it on 4/15 and aim to get to the post office before it closed (I’m old school and file paper), but now that I’m married, I need to do it on 4/14 so I can get my spouse to sign it that night, for mailing 4/15.

1

u/GiveUsSomeMoney 5h ago

Every Dang Year! Ugh!!

46

u/chrystalight 22h ago

And if anyone needs a recommendation for an easy and cheap software, I 10/10 recommend freetaxusa. It's completely free for federal - no needing to upgrade for special forms - I haven't come across any forms that freetaxusa doesn't support. States are 14.99 each. The software is extremely easy and not annoying to use (I mean taxes are always annoying but besides that lol).

13

u/RowansRys 21h ago

thank you thank you thank you!!!! I always end up defaulting to TT, which is not cheap when you need all the business forms. I'm going to try this out!

5

u/ffffester ADHD-C 14h ago

seconding this!! so thankful for this website lol

3

u/Jolly-Persimmon-7775 15h ago

That’s what I’ve been using and I love it.

2

u/youaintbad 4h ago

Just used it for this first time this year and highly recommend. You can use turbo tax to cross reference the numbers if you’re scared of messing up.

I got so fed up paying hundreds of dollars for a random dude to do the same thing.

39

u/roxy031 23h ago

I’m doing mine tomorrow and dreading every second of it.

10

u/StateYourCase 22h ago

Me too. Literally don’t want to but if I don’t tomorrow then missing the date is inevitable 😭

6

u/supmister 18h ago

Me three!!! I made my girlfriend promise to not let me NOT finish it this weekend! There have already been due dates I’ve missed, but this is 😮‍💨

I had 2 different jobs, healthcare plans, in 2 different states (one without income tax) versus the last 7 years I had one job in a no income tax state and free tax help from United Way volunteers.

4

u/Upset_Excitement_553 17h ago

Have a GOOD reward waiting for you afterward. The only way I made it through this year lol

1

u/GraphCat 5h ago

I had to get together with my ex to do taxes this year (and last year), and while they're a really great person, it's a super unfun way to spend two afternoons of my life.

34

u/punkinholler 20h ago

To add to this, if you make less than $84k and don't have a ton of complicated extras like trusts or weird income, you can file your taxes for free. Don't give your money to Turbo Tax. Those assholes are the reason we have to be tortured with this bullshit every year instead of just being given a check or a bill directly from the IRS.

3

u/GraphCat 5h ago

Or use FreeTaxUSA!!!

24

u/crazygirlmb 19h ago

And use freetaxusa instead of turbo tax! TT lobbies to make taxes more complicated so that you'll need to use their services.

23

u/Sunny_Glitter1028 23h ago

No!!! I already owe and have payment plans in effect lmao I don’t wanna add more to it 😭😭

10

u/olivedeez 23h ago

Same 😭😭

17

u/icefirecat 22h ago

I submitted mine on March 28th which is 3 days earlier than last year and the earliest I’ve ever done it, might not seem like a lot but I’m very proud of myself lol

12

u/quay-cur 20h ago

TODAY IS APRIL 4th. Today is April 4th. WHERE THE HELL DOES THE TIME GO? March was 5 minutes long!

12

u/WatercoLorCurtain 22h ago

I did my taxes last night! Spent the whole day psyching myself up for it and now it’s done. Hooray!!!

11

u/Successful-Winter237 20h ago

Freetaxusa.com. Makes it relatively easy!

10

u/LillyLally13 20h ago

Remind me at 11 PM on April 14th. I'll get it done

8

u/eatingwithpeople ADHD-PI 23h ago

Damnit. Now I got more stuff to do this weekend.

8

u/FortuneTellingBoobs 23h ago

Great. I have eleven days to come up with the multiple tens of thousands of dollars I owe. 😭

8

u/ShirazGypsy 22h ago

Please pin this at the top of the page in capital letters with descending countdown thank you

5

u/cameandlurked 17h ago

I read “with a condescending countdown” at first lol. Both are good

8

u/ladyonecstacy 22h ago

For Canadians I believe the due date is April 30th!

8

u/scdiabd ADHD 21h ago

I laughed so hard when I saw this but I know I don’t have the money I will owe and so… I have not filed

8

u/meothe 21h ago

Some states have automatic extensions due to federally declared disasters

4

u/meothe 21h ago

What areas qualify for the May 1, 2025, deadline?

The May 1, 2025, deadline applies to taxpayers affected by FEMA disaster declarations issued during 2024. These include:

• Taxpayers in the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina • Alaska - The City and Borough of Juneau • New Mexico - Chaves County • Tennessee - Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties • Virginia - Albemarle, Appomattox, Bedford, Bland and Botetourt counties; Bristol City; Buchanan, Buckingham, Carroll and Charlotte counties; Covington City; Craig County; Danville City; Dickenson and Floyd counties; Galax City; Giles, Grayson, Greene, Lee, Madison, Montgomery and Nelson counties; Norton City; Patrick, Pittsylvania and Pulaski counties; Radford City; Roanoke City; Roanoke, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe counties

2

u/whatdayoryear ADHD 20h ago

I believe there’s also an extension for areas of SoCal but I’m not 100% sure

6

u/Chickstan33 21h ago

I also want to add that the RealID will be required soon to fly. I...am panicking that mine won't be ready by May for an important flight for a funeral. Having to scramble to get that done and renew my passport as a backup. Shit is stressful when you're fighting your brain.

6

u/StarWars_Girl_ ADHD-C 23h ago

I did mine in February. 🙃

6

u/mykki-d 23h ago

Put this video on if music motivates you! It got me in the productive mood 💃

6

u/llamasarefunny56 23h ago

I fully was expecting a Rick roll 💀

2

u/mykki-d 17h ago

Hahaha noo I wouldn’t do that. This is Reddit though…

5

u/Queasy-Trash8292 21h ago

You can file an automatic extension that gives you until Oct 15th. If you think you will get a refund and not have to pay in, then this is a thing to do - it’s a super simple form. Just do it before April 15th!!

https://www.irs.gov/filing/get-an-extension-to-file-your-tax-return

4

u/stipwned_thrill 14h ago

And then don’t forget about the due date of October 15th, like I did. 😭

2

u/Queasy-Trash8292 8h ago

Oh I’ve never forgotten the date. But have I buried my head in the sand in ignored them for years? Why yes, yes I have!

For the first time since my abusive (trust me court orders, protection orders, CPS orders on him and 10 years post divorce he still impacts my life even though we have no contact) ex came into the picture, I am caught up on taxes!

As I get a better handle on understanding my ADHD, I am getting a better handle on my life. One of the hardest things is getting used to what happens when I actually DO THE THINGS. Like I’m caught up. My house is getting streamlined and actually decorated like I didn’t just move in. It’s …. BORING!! I am trying my best to enjoy boring and stop creating chaos by lack of action or putting things off until crisis sets in and I have the motivation and energy. Oh it’s hard to just to a little bit each day and not a 48 hour no-eating marathon ultra-focus session.

11

u/becksturr 23h ago

Misread taxes as Texas and got confused 😭

5

u/Acrobatic-Director-1 22h ago

I panicked in January and kept repeating it into February until the hubs made an appointment. Then I was late in submitting my docs but our accountant auto files an extension for all their clients due to volume. I have a ridiculous fear that the tax man is going to battering ram my front door open if I don’t pay him. I don’t know why I’m like this. 😂

5

u/kgtsunvv 20h ago

Next year file as soon as you get your W4 and get that schmoney. I’m always broke and need the refund💃

2

u/theobedientalligator 16h ago

I did that this year and still haven’t gotten my money. 3 months later…

1

u/kgtsunvv 15h ago

Oof I’m sorry. I should check that i actually got mine.

6

u/pschola ADHD-HI 16h ago

I’ve done it like around January because I’m hyperfocused on money. 💰✨

2

u/AliasNefertiti 15h ago

Tell me how to get that hyperfocus!! It is so borrrrrirng.

3

u/pschola ADHD-HI 2h ago

pOvErTy 💪

1

u/AliasNefertiti 1h ago

Good point!

3

u/faithmauk 18h ago

Do we still have to pay taxes tho...?

5

u/Special_Agency_4052 17h ago

that's what I'm saying 😭 I've been putting it off intentionally bc of everything yk?

5

u/faithmauk 17h ago

It's kind of like when there's a natural disaster and you're not sure if you have to go to school the next day or not 😂😭

3

u/GenXMillenial 23h ago

Mine is set to withdraw 4/14, all done!

3

u/Responsible-Alarm-62 22h ago

I did mine today after (accidentally) putting it off for WEEKS! 😁🙌

3

u/Melsura 22h ago

Filed this morning. Ty for this!!

3

u/thatotheramanda 20h ago

We went today and truly I had been semi-actively panicking about it since Jan. It took 1.5 hours, and did not end up nearly as bad as I had feared (I was 1099 most of 2024). It took a few hours before I could convince myself to drop that particular stress!

1

u/MigraineLass 16h ago

Did you pay estimated taxes in all four quarters? I was 1099 for the first few months but only paid estimated once and now I live in fear of being audited. :(

5

u/Hello_Hangnail 23h ago

No video games tonight gonna suffer through my taxes 🙃

7

u/Burnt_Lore 22h ago

Mine are relatively simple but they legit only took me half an hour, and it would have taken less time if I didn't get myself turned around backwards in the software at some point. You. Got. This!

2

u/Jessica_Iowa ADHD-C 23h ago

Bless you.

You are doing the Lord’s work.

2

u/TheTeaLOL 21h ago

Still haven’t filed for myself smh then when the day before comes I’m gonna wanna panic. 😭😭

1

u/cameandlurked 17h ago

This is the way

2

u/flowrsinyrhair 20h ago

Ughhhhhh maybe tomorrow….

2

u/the_moral_explorer 19h ago

Thank you so much for the reminder. I in fact do need it 💖❤️‍🩹

2

u/ibelongto_thestars 17h ago

Thank you because I’ve completely forgot 😭😭😭

2

u/theobedientalligator 16h ago

Sent my taxes in in January, still haven’t gotten my money. Don’t get your hopes up for your refunds, people.

2

u/amorningfrost 14h ago

I dropped mine off to my tax lady today 😅

Every year I’m like I SWEAR I’m going to get it done early this year, as soon as all my w-2’s come in

Every single year I’ve filed them in April

2

u/chocolate-coffee 9h ago

Happy to report that I finished my taxes in February. All I have to do is click submit.

2

u/SamHandwichX 8h ago

JFC THANK YOU

IM extra dumb this year bc i did them in January but I was missing one number that didn’t affect the outcome. Found the number weeks ago.

It’s all sitting there, practically finished. For WEEKS.

2

u/taypeepy 22h ago

Who cares about taxes? The 1% aren’t paying! Why should we?

13

u/Burnt_Lore 22h ago

I wish the IRS would agree with this mentality!

8

u/RowansRys 21h ago

Alas, until they do, two things are true. 1) how miserable they can make my life and 2) how miserable I can make my life being anxious about how miserable they can make my life.

1

u/honesttogodprettyasf 22h ago

i needed this. scanning my w2's rn

1

u/bikewino 21h ago

Omg. I’ve been putting it off and panicking every day since the beginning of March. Finally started it a couple days ago… the procrastination is real.

1

u/cmlambert89 21h ago

My mom reminded me today too 😖 I have just a couple more documents to track down and I said I’m setting aside time this weekend to address it. Gah I’ll do it I promise!! Thanks for the nudge

1

u/msmsms101 21h ago

😬😑🙃

1

u/morriganlefeye 21h ago

FINE i did them. thank you.

....i was supposed to do it this last weekend but i was tired.

0

u/bredditmh 21h ago

Is there a way to do taxes for free anymore? I already paid to get mine done with H&R Block but mentioned wanting to do it myself next year and they said it’s not free anymore.

3

u/Proper_Party 18h ago edited 18h ago

Yes! Lots of options, but you can start here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-free-file-do-your-taxes-for-free

I personally prefer the fillable forms option, because I like knowing where stuff goes and why. Since my tax situation is pretty stable, I use the instructions and mostly refer back to last year's tax return to help me fill out the new one.

Edit: You could also try direct file (https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-direct-file-for-free) if you qualify. It's new-ish and I've never used it, but it also exists!

1

u/MuchAdoAbtSoulThings 19h ago

Hilarious!!! Yet I haven't done mine yet so thank you OP!

1

u/Icy-Finance5042 19h ago

I did mine in January. Got confused, thought I had to do them again. Lol

1

u/alittlewoowoo 19h ago

GOAT. thanks gal!

1

u/sleepysamantha22 19h ago

Thank you for the reminder

1

u/crindy- 18h ago

Omfg thank you

1

u/FrequentlySad12 18h ago

My boyfriend moved my 3 W2s and can’t find them and I’ve been procrastinating searching for them 🫠

1

u/Educational-Toe-4656 17h ago

california residents we have until october!

1

u/smnthhns 17h ago

I plan to do it on Sunday or Monday. I’m 36 weeks pregnant and 100% should have done it earlier in the year when baby wasn’t so close… but oh well I guess!

1

u/mongooser 12h ago

Ugh I really don’t want to do my taxes this year. Why should I give musk one more penny? Sigh

1

u/Ok-Grab9754 7h ago

Fuuuuuuuuuck

1

u/doxielady228 7h ago

Nah I did mine early in case orange shit head got rid of the irs and there was a shot I wasn't gonna get my refund. Bonus points for me my accountant has esign so I emailed and texted everything and didn't even have to exchange actual words with her.

1

u/finallyfound10 7h ago

I have an appointment at HR Block in 1.5 hours. I have 1 job and no investments so it should be easy.

I hate money, finances, taxes, investments anything in that area.

1

u/kindalibrarian 7h ago

If you’re in Canada you’re already late 🤪

1

u/ClassroomLumpy5691 6h ago

I'm in the UK and ours were due end of January.

I was all excited as due a refund. But managed not to wait long enough after the 'submit" button was pressed to actually file the thing.

Then went away from home and couldn't understand why I received a late filing penalty.

I messaged them protesting adhd and got it waived. I had time stamped evidence that I'd downloaded a complete pdf on 13 January.
So my tip is download, save, download. And always wait for the submit confirmation.

2

u/coolnam3 5h ago

My time-blindness makes me do things super early, so I filed on Jan 22, as soon as I had all my paperwork. FreeTaxUSA was like "ok, we'll file this for you as soon as the IRS starts accepting tax paperwork!"

But I guess being in debt and always getting a refund (even though it gets smaller every year) makes you more excited for tax time.

1

u/Interesting_Win_2476 5h ago

Can we all body double in spirit 😭 i haven’t even started!

1

u/n0n3mu28 5h ago

If you’re like me you’ll file the extension on 4/14 at 11pm.

1

u/Artistic-Crab6849 5h ago

everyone here makes me feel so normal :) i have my tax appt today yayyyyy

1

u/FewTomatillo4962 4h ago

OMG! Thank you!!! I completely forgot.

1

u/jajoopaloop 4h ago

April 15 is also last day to add to your Roth IRA (7,000 max) for 2024!!!

1

u/Acrobatic-Seat-1044 4h ago

Thanks for the reminder! I’ll do mine tonight, maybe tomorrow we’ll see

1

u/Salt-Tweety17 2h ago

Thank you! I’ve been saying im gonna do my taxes next weekend since January 30 or something. So yeah I gotta do them!

1

u/Salt-Tweety17 2h ago

I did do my VEIP test early a full month before its due date because one time I let it fester for months and ended up paying $75 for it — up from the usual $14. I was shooketh! 😩

1

u/cdkmakes 21h ago

Fuck em. They can wait

1

u/mweisbro 21h ago

Do it. The task is easier than the thought.

I literally did turbo tax today on phone 40 minutes. I had slow internet.

It was crazy easy. I finally started because I was afraid I would forget. Started and just kept going!!!

Do it!!!!!! Now!!!!!!
