I Quit a sketchy workplace recently and since they can't find a replacement, they just asked me to do a job for them

A few weeks back i finally quit a job that was underpaying, overworking and asking us to do sketchy/straight up illegal things (Not having permits, no PPE etc).

While i was there, more than once, they pretty much made it clear they considered me expendable and they'd let me go to hire someone else if i didn't "fit their culture".
So there was definitely a little schadenfreude today when they called up to ask if i could come do a job for them.

Too bad i know the reason no one there will do the job they're asking for is because, surprise, it's both illegal and unsafe again. Wonder why they've having so much trouble finding a replacement?

sketchy/straight up illegal things

Have you considered informing the relevant regulatory or law enforcement agencies?

Maybe he doesn't want to get the Boeing Whistleblower in the parking lot.

They could collect all the evidence, and host it on the Dark Net anonymously. They could also put it on a usb/Micro USB they have with no link to their Identity (even as far as what store it came from, and who may have purchased it) , and have that sent to somewhere like a News Station.

There are methods of OpSec to get this sort of thing communicated that go back since before the CIA and etc. The biggest worry in my opinion would be finding someone competent you could truly trust with such controversial and damning evidence.

I would also suggest if this becomes plan on their part, make a couple copies, and keep two themselves as a 'Dead mans hand'. Keep one digital in a location that is not connected to a network, and one analog copy(Paper), and never keep them in the same locations.

You've been watching way too many low budget movies.

I did consider it, but at the moment two people i'm still on good terms with work there, one of which really needs the job. We're working on finding him something better but i don't want to do anything that might rock the boat for him while he's stuck there

Edit: On that note, anyone in Wollongong/Sydney on the hunt for a kick arse graphic designer?

So you’ll stay quiet to save their jobs rather than say something to save their lives?

They're also refusing to go out to those jobs too

Trying to figure out what dangers and illegal activity graphic designers are doing

More specifically, this place does Sign Making and Line Marking.
It was most often things like working without the proper permits (on site induction, working at heights, riggers license etc). Working on the roadside without proper traffic control which at best could be a hefty fine, at worst injury or death.
I rememeber on one job i asked to do a Dial before you Dig and was told "too expensive, just dig carefully".
Not to mention there wasn't a single fire extinguisher or hose on our property (i brought this up a few times, was ignored). All just generally negligent things

My friend was hired as a Graphic Designer which definitely isn't a dangerous job, but this place will constantly try and wrangle you into going off with the offsite teams to help on installs and line jobs. Regardless of if you're actually trained or qualified

“I’ll do it for $10,000 up front. Cash in hand before I start, here’s my contract.”

if you get paid and show up: “Oh hey this is too dangerous, my contract says I don’t do dangerous work. Need anything else or can I go home? Thanks for the $10k btw.”

Like the CFPB, it will continue to exist. They just won't do what they were chartered to do.

Which means it effectively won't exist

Are they asking you to do illegal things via writing?

Tell them you'll do it. Call 5 min before you're supposed to be there and say something came up and you'll do it in a few days. Keep doing that until they stop answering your calls.

Why does this sound like the company James Thomas Productions

Edit: if your in the USA please call OSHA on them

Ignore them and move on. This makes the decision simple and final. Step one: Don't say anything, don't reply - nothing Step two: Nothing Step three: Move on

Have a drink and celebrate the schadenfreude, my friend — they are suffering the consequences that have probably been a long-time coming. They will now suffer from starving for labor, or hey, with any luck, maybe they’ll finally get busted for their doings.
