Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

best potato dish in sf?

my boyfriend loves potatoes, so for his birthday i want to take him to a restaurant with incredibly delicious potatoes that we can’t easily make ourselves at home.

where in sf can we get an insanely delicious potato dish (ideally a sitdown restaurant where the other food is good too)? the potatoes can be fries, mashed, baked, duck fat, etc., it just has to be suuuuuuuuuper delicious.

restaurant price point and cuisine can vary. we love all sorts of delicious food, from fine dining to dive-y, cash only.

ISO PERSON WITH ACNE FOR MODEL

Hi there! I am in school to obtain my esthetician license. I am seeking a model WITH acne for a COMPLIMENTARY facial treatment. It would be an advanced facial and includes galvanic current. This would take place either May 21/22. You cannot have any metal in your body that can’t come out at time of service- ie: piercings, screws in bones, pacemaker, braces. Please let me know if you’re interested- again this would be a complimentary service worth upwards of $200 at local spas. Thanks!

I like to shop at Nijaya in Japantown and occasionally a Chinese market in the Richmond. Does anyone know owners or have facts or opinions on what might happen to these places?

Having a small wedding @ GGP Shakespeare Garden-- restaurant with similar vibe for after the ceremony?

I'm getting married in a few months and I'm looking for a restaurant with a private dining space for 20-ish people.

We chose the Shakespeare Garden because we're lovers of history/theater/literature/etc, so we want the restaurant to compliment the general aesthetic.

Cost isn't a huge obstacle, and proximity to the park would be appreciated but not mandatory.

Thank you!!!!

Tell me your SF favorite meal

I don’t want to know your favorite place, I want to know your favorite meal at your favorite place. The one thing that you never stray from because it is so delicious nothing can’t tempt you from it.

I’m coming to SF for a few days and will be there for one breakfast, two lunches, two dinners and however many snacks in between I can stomach.

Nothing is off limits. Fire away!

*Edited to say: 1. Keep em coming 2. Y’all showed out! Never thought I’d get so many responses but I LOVE how much yall love SF and good food. Can’t wait to try some of these!

Where can I get my plants repotted?

Plant noob here who has somehow kept one sansevieria alive for 2 years and it's due to be repotted.

I have no clue and don't want to kill another plant hah so I'd be okay paying a bit to get it done by someone with more experience.

Question - is there a nursery I can go to who might do this for me?

Visiting for 3 Days

Hi All,

Excited to visit SF for a short trip for the first time next month. Only there for 3 days and staying near Fisherman's Wharf. Curious if there are any recommendations for the best sushi in that vicinity? And any activities that I might not come across on typical tourist boards.

Planning Muir Forest, Chinatown, relaxing walks by the water. My son is 13 and a sushi, boba tea, architecture fan. Thanks in advance. Sorry is this is a weird all on this board 🤷‍♂️🙏, my first visit here too.

Looking for a good university for MA in Fine Arts/Painting

Upvotes

Hey guys, I hope you're all having a great time.

I'm a 21 y.o painting student and going to finish my BA in Fina Arts in next year.

I have chose Los Angeles as my dream destination and I'm looking for good (and affordable lol) universities/colleges to pursue a MA in Fine Arts/Painting. I don't kniw about the costs, housing, financial aid, etc. so I'm having a hard time finding the most suitable option. University websites don't help much in my case.

I don't know about the cost of living (I'm more than willing to work my ass off tho) and I have no idea what university or college to choose (currently I'm unaware of their difference).

I have heard bad news about Academy of Arts University which was my first option but after reading that post, I decided to ask ya'll for guidance.

Thank you in advance.

peace.

San Francisco substitute teachers - where to apply & tips on getting consistent work

Hey guys! I’m a teacher in Thailand right now and planning on moving back to SF this summer to get my masters in early childhood education. I’m planning substitute teaching while taking my CSET exams this first year back and then starting my masters the summer of 2026. I’ve talked to a couple of people who work for SFUSD and they have basically said not to work for SFUSD. I know one girl who subbed for SFUSD and recently got laid off because of all the budgeting issues they’re going through. So, what is the best way to find sub work at independent schools? Should I apply directly with schools or do it through an agency. I could commute around the bay if I have to but I would love a short commute within the city.

Why is Cobb's closed until May 1?

Email from Cobb's today: "We are closed until May 1st, but you can still enjoy fantastic comedy shows at our sister club Punch Line San Francisco!"

Does anyone know why they are closing? Is it a remodel? If so, what improvements can we expect?

United Club Lounges at SFO

Upvotes

Which club lounge out of the three at SFO is the best one for food options, drinks, relaxation, etc? Which is the worst and why?

If I get there around 8pm or 9pm, is it likely to be open and not at capacity?

Shipping my car to San Francisco

I'm moving to San Francisco in a few weeks from the east coast and I'm shipping my car over.

I was wondering what would be a good spot to actually take delivery of the car when it gets there. Right now I don't have an apartment leased, still looking but most likely Mission Bay. Thanks!

Edit: I'm aware most people do not need a car in SF, thanks to everyone who brought this up!

Is commuting from Oakland to SSF tough?

What the title says. Will only have to go to SSF a couple times a week. There is a company shuttle that stops in Oakland, but not sure about rush hour/traffic. Any info helps, thanks!

Bay Area stylist for men with longer hair?

Anybody have a good recommendation for a hair stylist in SF or nearby for a guy with collar length hair? I've not had good luck with barbers who tend rush and are better with clippers than with scissors. So I tend to prefer a small salon/shop with a stylist who's great with men's hair. I'd rather pay for quality, so not looking for a supercuts special. Thanks in advance for any recs!

Massage practitioners that take insurance?

I've recently got a massage prescription from my doctor. Can anyone recommend any massage providers in the city that take insurance? My insurance is Blue Cross / Blue Shield. I've searched with their tool and I'm only seeing chiropractors.

I would appreciate any tips from anyone who has been able to get massage covered under their insurance in the area!

Best Cat Dental Services Near SF

I just took my cat into the vet yesterday for a routine checkup. All was well except for her teeth. For reference, my cat is 7 years old and stays indoors only. I took her to Ocean Avenue Veterinary Hospital.

The vet told me she has gingivitis! I really want to schedule a dental cleaning to make sure she's ok and to see if extractions are needed. The estimate for dental cleanings at Ocean Avenue Veterinary Hospital ranged from $1,500-$2,500, which blew me away!

I called around and it seems like many different offices have similar pricing, although the office in Pacifica was a little less expensive.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other options? I do think a cleaning is necessary, and am willing to drive a bit if it means the bill is less comparable to my rent.

Any house cleaning service recommendations?

Been living in the city for a couple of years, but my roommates and I have decided to invest in house cleaning. We have approximately 1700 square feet of space between our bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and common spaces.

Any recommendations or a good service that could be done on a bi-monthly or quarterly basis?

Recently moved; looking for hair stylist that specializes in platinum blondes

ISO a great colorist / hair stylist who can nail the Scandi blonde look for me before summer officially starts. I’ve poked around online but am mostly seeing blonde specialists that only seem to focus on adding dimension to brown hair or balayage. I’m looking for someone who can nail that Tampa/2000s/Pam Anderson platinum. I have a car and am willing to bridge and tunnel it so I’m not limited to just SF.
