Thai food in austin

I’m looking for the best thai food TAKEOUT in Austin — specifically for pad thai. There a few great thai dine - in or food truck options I have tried bc but I’m talking the best takeout with the biggest portions, i feel like these are always from the places you would never think to go to in the most random areas.

So the Cosmic location planned for the old Indian Roller is dead right?

I am basing this assumption off of driving past it occasionally for the last year and it looking like the same half torn down building.

Food Review Haraz coffee- tasty karak chai & solid pastry game

We enjoyed sharing a piping hot pitcher of karak chai yesterday along with one of their chocolate "biscoff" brownies. The brownie was very dense and not too sweet.

There are several takes of the biscoff cookie/pastry including a cheesecake and a cookie baked into another cookie. The cheesecakes also looked appealing and included pistachio, oreo and a biscoff cheesecake. There were also several varieties of sweet and savory croissants including one filled with nutella.

We also enjoyed a slice of "bee bites" which is honey comb bread filled with pockets of cream cheese and a side of honey. Their version was sprinkled with sesame seeds and was soft to the touch but not too squishy, sort of like a focaccia texture.

We look forward to visiting when we are in the Wells branch area again.

Got their buy 5 slice special and get a 6th free for $31. Each slice was huge the highlights were the Spicy marg, the tomato with lemon bread crumbs, and the hot honey sausage! Special guest my dog Louie, he did not get any but he did get a treat for being a good boy!

Could Austin support a trailer that only served snowcones infused with Yerba Mate?

Recommendations for a Ring Ceremony Lunch for a Large Group

Upvotes

I’m looking for recommendations on a nice restaurant for a group of about 12 for a lunch to celebrate my daughter receiving her ring. I’m hoping we can find something not too far from campus.

My daughter had suggested Yamas or Aba’s but we have some hurdles. My mother is super picky and cannot find anything on the menu at Yamas, yet she wants to pay for it so I cannot rationalize her going through McDonalds after paying for a nice meal for everyone else. Aba’s requires family style dining for a party that large so not only would we have to accommodate her, but we have wheat allergies (gluten free usually works) and children in the mix. I would also love to get the price point down a smidge if we can.

My daughter is pretty adventurous with food aside from seafood and likes to eat fairly healthy, leaning towards Mediterranean foods often.

I know I’m probably looking for a unicorn restaurant, but also Austin has such great food and so many options that I feel like there’s something out there that can at least be close to checking the box.

Edited to add: Our family has had a pretty traumatic month and my daughter has really been at the epicenter of it all, by no fault of her own. I just really want to make her feel special and feel all of our love for her!

TLDR: Looking for a nice restaurant with great weekday brunch or lunch for a group of 12 +/- that is enjoyable but can also accommodate picky eaters (think simple options) and gluten free requirements.

Matt’s El Rancho’s Salsa

I desperately need a copycat recipe for Matt’s El Rancho’s salsa. I’ve scoured the internet and still come up empty handed. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I’ll love you forever.

Anniversary Dinner - Restaurant Recommendations

Hey everybody! My 2 year anniversary with my boyfriend is coming up, and I want to go to a nice yet affordable restaurant. I'm completely lost because I don't really go out that much.

I know that I want it to be affordable, maybe $100-$150 for a two-person meal. I also want it to be very pretty and romantic because I want to take pictures together. No seafood, but I'm open to other types of food. Please let me know!! Also, it's a given that the food must be good but emphasis on that cuz the bf is a chef :P

Thanks!!

Wonton soup

Someone recommended wonton soup from Me Con recently. It was a comment on a post I don’t recall. Anyway, thank you! Solid rec. They’re pretty, even. Delicious, delicate broth. And it was delivery. Must be even better at the restaurant.

Dear Chronicle: this is lame

Allowing ads that specifically target the voting category like this is just lame. You know who can afford to buy ads? Bigger chains like Snarfs. (Well, and apparently El Dorado Cafe.) Goes without saying that getting nominated to your final Best Of poll is going to mean a lot more to a local independent place than it will to a nation-wide chain. But you’ve opted to give established companies a leg up by allowing advertising like this. Disappointing.

I searched the subreddit to see if anyone had posted about it, and can't believe nobody has! Sivestar Indian tacos! It's like Chipotle but with authentic Indian food. It's delicious, cheap, and totally empty yesterday, you all need to check it out.

Eastside pies conundrum

I don't get this place whatsoever.

The pizza is like 2 out 10 at best. Has 'pies' in the title. But the sandwiches are just amazing, the quality of the cuts of meat, is fantastic. It's like they have a full deli in the back.

Their bread/cheese sticks are incredible too, the cheese, bread, all great.

So why the hell they go all in with the sucky pizza, it's like they have 10 out of 10 sandwich skills but went all in with 2 out of 10 pizza skills..

Like.... why?!

As far as I'm concerned, it's a sandwich place, not a pizza place, but it's gotta hurt them branding themselves as a pizza place with shitty pizza. It makes no sense, it's on par with asking for a burger at a Mexican restaurant.

Some please help me understand

Downtown steakhouse recs

Deciding between J Carver’s, Jeffrey’s, or Dean’s.

Ambiance/ aesthetic, great service, and quality food are all important to me.

Jeffrey’s and J Carver’s aesthetic align with what I’m seeking, but Dean’s menu seems to offer an array of foods that I love— particularly loving the seafood and Japanese A5 waygu options.

Any insight into the above restaurants would be so helpful!!

Mozart's Events

I've seen constant negative reviews about stuff going on at Mozart (too expensive, tourist trap, etc), so I don't usually include its events in my "What's Weird ATX" weekly newsletter. But every so often I come across one that doesn't seem like it would have the usual issues: example https://www.instagram.com/p/DH4GGxop9cj/?img_index=1

My question is, people who have been to Mozart's lately-- should I reconsider including these events in my newsletter or is Mozart's just something I should not recommend going forward?

Quick Bites

My wife and I will be attending a concert in downtown Austin tonight. Driving in from Liberty Hill so we don’t mind stopping in Cedar Park, North Austin, or downtown. We’re still somewhat new to the area and haven’t explored much.

Since we don’t have much time before the concert, I was wondering what our best options were for a QUICK bite but is still unique to Austin. Something along the lines of Cabo Bobs, Tacorrido, etc. (doesn’t have to be tacos but those just came to mind). Thanks!

Fried shrimp or fish tacos - where?

I know we aren’t known for our seafood scene (or lack of) but I’ve just been really craving fried shrimp for weeks now. We live near The Boat but not entirely sold on trying them out based on recent reviews. I’m also down for a good fish taco if anyone has any recs!

Heading to Lockhart today for BBQ, which restaurant has the best Brisket?

I’m from austin and have had my fair share of great bbq here. My friend from Europe (first time in the US) and I are heading to TX State today and wanted to stop in Lockhart for bbq. I understand there are better places in Austin, (we already went to Leroy and Lewis) but want to know which spot out of all the restaurants there have the best brisket and sides? Thanks :)
