If this is your first run, I dont recommend it. If you’re open to modding I have a suggestion or two
Funny enough berserker enrage doesnt protect agains involuntary berserk, its like the only thing it doesn’t along with petrification

Anyway a few workarounds that require mods:
Artisan Kitpack berserker becomes immune to involuntary rage which makes this really damn powerful unless you gotta swap to spiderbane for some free action (you will because rage isnt a catch all button)
Bardic Wonders mod offers a troubador kit which has a special ability called voice of peace which heals and blocks berserk and rage, keep in mind it curse barbs and zerks of their anger too and prevents them for the turn as well. If you want to be the user of the sword, the mod offers a component that lets GARRICK be this kit. Keep in mind this comes at level 10 so mere 1k exp from bg1s cap.
I recall Aura can uncurse it. Come bg2… why are you still using this?! The sword in the sewer is also +3 AND it talks to you! Its also insanely easy to get because if you try and rush the zerking sword the thief in that group will probably chunk someone even if you did sod to reach 500k
Im pretty sure there are some mods that let you use this sword in an upgrade. Rolles mod lets you take this and every other big sword and make a godly 2h weapon that can cast enrage 3x a day so suddenly berserker class is redundant when you can be a kensai who clicks enrage… but thats another analysis!

There's a bunch of tips on the bg wiki.
Some bulletpoints I'd suggest:
- The +5 thac0 and damage when zerking is strong af especially for a right out of nestled atop cliffs lvl 1 toon that goes and talks to the guy and is given the weapon.
But:
- If solo run, only equip it for encounters you know you'll easily handle. Wouldn't face a lvl 2+ mage while wielding it. Otherwise powerword reload and no fucks given.
- Super annoying tho since you'll need a remove curse everytime you wanna switch out of it. So it's either a run to a temple, or wasting 3rd circle priest/druid/shammy slots, that needs to be level 5+ ish character. Or equip spell, use it, rest, equip other spell. Still annoying. Bad tradeoff.
- Super annoying fact that even if it shields you from some critical mind spells, as soon as combat ends these spells take effect if still haven't worn off.
- Super annoying fact that you gotta keep your party out of harms way all the time. Or have sources of invisiblity ready. Especially your priest that needs to keep you on a leash.
- Since your toon is a warrior, no chance for priest of tyr exaltation.

There is a youtuber/streamer who does challenge runs of bg, he did solo run with this sword. His name is JunJunKit if you are curious. But if its your first playthrough, it will spoil the story and game for you, so i wouldnt recommend it.
When you go berserk you may kill your conpanions or rabdom bystanding npcs, and your game will be basically an autofighter.
For the tips, be as tanky as possible, ring of free action is probably good too so you wont just be stuck in web whole fight until enemies kill you, if you have good thief, he can pickpocket it of Dushai in ulgoths beard. For the class thats your choice, some fighter without much micromanagment... berserk for more roleplay and enrage which makes you immune to many effects, wizard slayer for that magic res and on hit effect, or blade so you can just start spinning before fight and slash through the game.
All and all im sure such run will require many of reloads, but which run doesnt? Main thing is if you enjoy your game.

Thanks for the tips... it's been a lot of fun for my RP... a lone wolf warrior with an ultra-low reputation, terrible charisma, violent and cruel. No wonder she's after Sarevok. She wants his place...

If you don't want to chunk your companion, then play solo or make him/her buff you and run away. Like buff, web spell, haste, and wear edventars gift after receiving haste, and star slashing.

If this isn't your first playthrough, give it a go its hella fun! Probably best to solo it, but if you insist on having a party keep them far away from MC during fights. Max out your Str and dex. You might have less hp survivability at 17 con as an elf.

Loved the YouTube video.
How’d you get that sphere around yourself in the Cloakwood Mines? What is the effect?

Thanks! Its the magic protection scroll from Nashkel carnival. Needed it to fight Hareishin, Natasha and Daveorn 🧐

Oooooh. Ok. I always get that and never use it. Thank you so much.
This is such a great idea.

I love using it. Its really OP. Solo two handed fighter or barb and go bim bam boem. Its fun roleplaying with is and to think about strategies for problematic encounters with it. Because it has risk

I did my first playthrough giving it to Minsc and send in him straight to murderland and running when all baddies are down till he comes back to reality. You end up loading a loat but it gives you some hilarous wacky violent moments. Like when you accidentally hurt somebody in a tabern and all NPCs turn red. It's murder time. In my last run I avoid it since it takes more than it gives. Not worth it mechanically speaking.

There are two tips:
The first tip is bring companions you don't like.
Because the second tip is the tip of your sword that is going to go into them.

Want tips on using it? Tip numera uno: Don't. Use other weapons. You go through a whole quest showing why it should not be used as well.

Just don’t. There are plenty of great non-cursed weapons that won’t cause you to randomly kill your companions. Just use Varscona or something.

The biggest tip I can provide is to avoid using it.
