I've been playing this game for a looong time and I just now realize that Davaeorn is wearing both the Evil Robe of the Arch-Magi and the Bracers to the Death, which are Bracers of Defense AC 6.
Robe of the Arch-Magi is AC 5. Those bracers are literally doing nothing for him.
Now, on one hand this is funny in-universe because it kinda tells me the guy didn't bother to identify the bracers before putting them on and is, as such, a pretty lame wizard. This absolutely tracks since every time I meet him I just have Vicky command his ass on the floor while he gets skewered in one round by the rest of the party.
Should have worn something for his saves vs. spell instead of going for style, worst lvl 11 wizard ever lol
But also it kinda gets me thinking about it from a game design point of view. Why the hell would the devs have him drop both? Bracers of Defense are only useful on pure casters since monks were not a thing in the original release, and the Robe that drops with them makes the bracers obsolete.
Sure, it's restricted to evil mages, but that's a non-issue since it's actually the LAST of the Arch-Mage robes to be unlocked, the other two being available from the very start of the game.
I guess maybe the reason was they wanted to guarantee a power-up for mages at that point in the progression, especially considering the nice scrolls you get there, and didn't want parties who run Dyna or Xan to get shafted, so they had him drop the bracers as a consolation prize, but I don't remember EVER getting to those mines without already having bought the appropriate robes from High Hedge.
But even then, they could have easily placed them in one of the many chests in that room instead of having him wear them.
While I was thinking about this I had a thought: in my experience level designers often misunderstand game mechanics that don't strictly pertain to map traversal, especially when working on a new IP.
Could it be that the people who designed the encounter intended for the two items to stack, and that Davaeorn was supposed to be MUCH harder to hit as a result? Maybe the designer in question thought the bracers were a flat -6 to AC, I know that's what I thought they did as an AD&D noob back in the day.
Now, that would have made new players smash their keyboards for sure.
