I got a BP from a reputable breeder in my area, 5 days later she died

I don’t know what I can do and if there is anything I can do… I don’t know what went wrong, her humidity and temperature are within range for BPs. The man I got her from said she had eaten a day before purchase so she didn’t starve and she wasn’t underweight. I tried messaging the breeder with pictures and questions but he just left me on opened. Has this happened to anyone else?? I’m so heart broken.

Question - Feeding Feeding %

My ball python is 5 years old and is 1100 grams. How much should the food I feed him be. I think I’ve been feeding him too big of rats and he is only eating every 6 weeks now. I think I will try smaller. What % body weight should it be.

Question Are Ball Pythons boring?

One thing I've been come across researching for my first snake is that balls are boring because they're always sleeping, is this true?

I think they are beautiful but I don't want to get a pet rock. No disrespect.

Question - Feeding My girl doesn’t strike at her food anymore

She’s always been a great eater and we’re very blessed for that but for last maybe six months she won’t strike and wrap her food up, she’ll come out of her hide for it and get right up on it and smell it but won’t grab it anymore, now I just leave it on top of her log and in the morning it’s gone, I feed her a medium rat every 15-20 days

Question - Heating/Temperatures Confused about heating

Ok so I've read through the guides posted here and I'm still fairly confused about heating...

My husband is building me a custom enclosure with a solid top, 4'x2'x2'. I will be rescuing an adult male BP in a few days and planning on a temporary tub enclosure with UTH until the main is ready. Two UTHs - I think the cool side would be too cold without an extra one there. And a two channel inkbird thermostat. That's not ideal, I know, but it would be for a week or two at most until I can get all the heating elements for the main enclosure (hubs says he can have the enclosure itself built by this Thursday).

So my main question is about heating the solid top 4'x2'x2'. How do you heat it at night? If my ambient temp is 70ish in the house how do I keep the cool side up above 75? My thought is three heating elements, two radiant panels (one on the cool side all the time and one on the warm side for at night) and one UVA/UVB lamp for during the day on the warm side. Is this correct? Do I need any UTH in the main enclosure? And then how do thermostats work because I was planning on getting a herpstat 4 but the RHP recommended on the shopping list says it isn't compatible with the herpstat 4... So what should I be getting? Am I overthinking this? Maybe there's a simpler way I'm not seeing. Also how should everything be mounted inside? I'm having a hard time visualizing what this will look like.

Any help greatly appreciated

Question - Heating/Temperatures Is it fine to rest halogen lamp reflector dome on mesh top or do I need to rest it on something?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I do not own a snake but am getting my first one soon and I’m setting up the enclosure right now.

Touching the mesh top directly under the halogen lamp or the DHP gets really hot. I can only rest my finger on the mesh underneath for about 4-5 seconds before it burn. It’s only super hot directly underneath the lamps. I get it’s meant to heat but could that hurt or burn my snake? Could that be a fire hazard? Or is this just working as intended and I’m over reacting. I’m still working out the temps but I just noticed that and needed to ask. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Wondering about the shedding process

Hello! I've had my ball python for 3 months and I know he's a juvenile. He shed when I first got home Jan. 10th was the last of it and then I was able to feed him. From the pictures you can see his feeding. He does look bigger, but he hasn't shed since and when I weighed him I think i did it wrong because it said he was 1300 grams. His take sits 90 F on hot side and 78-81 F, on the cool side with constant humidity at 70%. The pic of him in my hand is when i first got him, the video is the most recent video. Attached is also his tank. He's pooped and I have springtails in there to decompose it.

Question - Health Is this a normal shedding healthy snake or a stuck shed and a bad scale rot on a starving bp? First time owner, please help.

Got my bp around 6 weeks ago and haven’t been able to get him to eat ever since and he hasn’t shed yet. I didn’t want to take him out before he eats for the first couple times not to stress him out, and let him acclimate to his new life, but I started to get worried after seeing some flakes that looked like stuck shed and I wanted to see if he was losing weight. So I finally took him out to inspect today, and I am panicking even more now because I don’t know what to make of what I see.

First of all, I usually keep the humidity between 50-60%, but I am now cranking it up to 70% and more since he looks like he trying to shed. He has 4 hides, 2 of them are dry, 2 of them are humid with damp sphagnum moss. He always uses his dry hide on the warm side and never really seen him chill anywhere else. I attached some pictures of the enclosure too.

So my questions are, just like in the title: - Is this what it looks like when a bp is in shedding or this is a stuck shed? - Is dark underbelly normal when they are shedding, could it be the substrate, or is it a bad scale rot? - I believe he is about 4-5 mo, and weighs 129g. Because I didn’t weight him before to give him some space, I don’t know if he lost any weight or not. Does he look underweight in the pics?

I am panicking, please help.

Question - Health Strange groups of possibly damaged scales

Since last she'd I've noticed these areas of browned, slightly raised scales in these concentrated areas. I hope it isn't scale rot. I tried to gently scrape and I gave him a bath but they seem to be stuck. Is it aome sort of would or damage. There are no missing scales in those areas, and the skin seems fine.
