BBS Software Amiga CNet BBS setup help
Hello all, just wondering if anyone knows of a good place to ask Amiga CNet BBS related questions other than via the BBS's (http://www.cnetbbs.net/bbs-systems/)? I have been doing my best to work through the manuals etc and am finding it extremely hard going! I admit its partly due to a lack of free time and that also limits my ability to hunt up information via other BBS's. On my "wish list" would be a sample config to work with etc? anyway.. would be very appreciative of any guidance on the subject!

There’s a default config that gets installed.. did you have a specific question? Installing it is pretty straightforward.
Have you seen the guide here?

Thanks for that, lots of questions that I keep struggling with. The basic config is very not what I wanted and getting to understand editing the menus and boards has been an uphill battle ;-) . The manual is a great "reference" manual but its not a good teaching device. Technically it was VERY easy to setup, I had a fully functioning system in minutes - ie; nodes etc..
First question that springs to mind that I could not locate was how to edit new user questions etc? Have no need of half of them in the default config.

I think those are just in the new/nq files

Thanks for the lead! I will have a look. I searched the manual and could find little / nothing about what's is what file nor how to edit it. I'm sure its just one of those things, once you know your way around the structure its easy - as you say straight forward. I'll have a look after work. Thanks again for the lead.

Hi again, I see nq(x) files etc, but how does one go about changing which ones are used etc? I have not been able to locate anything telling me what I need to do. I see you could change the wording etc but how to add / remove questions etc? Thank you again.

I think you can just delete them

Oh, really and then the questions just "go away"! Wow, I will give that a go tonight! many thanks again!

Sadly deleting etc or editing them even was of no real help to towards my goal. However thanks again for the suggestion.

Paging anachronist! I hit him up in Discord, he's the sysop of Absinthe BBS, maybe he can be of assistance. Good luck!

Just for reference.. I am setting it up on a Vampire 4SA.. adding another layer of complexity perhaps..

Very close to a basic BBS on the V4SA running AmiExpress!!!!! *minimum features to start with.

Any particular reason you're going with CNET ?
I ran Maxs BBS 1.52/.54 myself for a number of years.

To be perfectly honest, I had not really considered an alternative until now! I see (only starting to look now) that AmiExpress has been re-written for the modern world!

While C-Net is super feature rich, I really don’t have great need for all of them. So I have decided to give the new “rewritten” AmiExpress a go! It’s current, active and open source. My initial test run on the Vampire V4SA has gone very!

Yeah BBS is starting to make a small resurgence, which is great :D Mystic BBS is a popular modern one but for PC.

Yes I run a Mystic BBS - lovely simple bit of software - for the club now, running under Linux in the cloud. It’s an Amiga club and crew wanted to have an Amiga hosted BBS again so that’s what started the new adventure.

Thanks very much for the reply! Simply as I had a registered copy of a recent release and several of our "group" members had fond memories of it. I'm not familiar with Maxs BBS? would you know if it is still current and available? I should have added, I remember the name but have no "current" knowledge of it - had assumed its long dead?

Its not officially been around for many years, but was always a stable and pretty straight forward system to run. I started my BBS on an Amiga500 with 3 floppy drives using Maxs :D Being free made it popular back in the day :) There is an owner/author still around on Facebook, and hes apparently been developing a modern Windows version of it but not sure if/when that'll appear. You can find the archives for it on Aminet.

Thanks for that! Yes I had a look and I see there is the 2 - I assume last versions and a “pro” that’s a side stepped version by the looks. I had tried it - way back when - as well as AmiExpress. I may well give both a look. C-Net is very feature rich but you really is a lot of work. Not being critical of it as a product! If you know it you can do amazing things with it.

Yup, I spent a lot of time with my BBS, it was very popular for its social life as well as its files, but then the internet came along....
My primary experience with CNET was via the local Amiga users club who ran it, it did the job but wasn't a "nice" looking BBS for the end users :D
Keeping looking at firing up my old BBS again for a laugh....

I ran several over the years other than the Cnet, like you it was for a club back then too and was version 2 if memory serves - the club paid for it. Personally I ran them on several machines. My first was one written in BASIC running on a Kaypro 10! Later I ran “Opus” on a Pc clone and in the end I think we were running SBBS?

Good luck. CNET has always been a huge PITA.

u/NABU-TRS80-MAD Dec 20 '24
Thanks, yes that's my memory of it too! I did "once" in the dim dark past set it up on an A2000! But I have literally NO memory of what I did and no longer have a copy. Very open to other suggestions!

I am trying to do it on fs-uae right now and just trying to get it, is impossible. I am stuck using an old version because the author will not respond to email or bbs mail.

Yes, telnet to the C-Net maintainer K-Guide's BBS Future World II at fw2.cnetbbs.net:6800. To see what can be done with C-Net as a base and years of programming and art, visit aBSiNTHE BBS at absinthebbs.net:1940 which is run by aNACHRONiST.
