Re-launching /r/birds with new moderators.

/r/birds is newly open, after being a restricted subreddit for a long time.

Last week the old moderators put out a call for new moderators and yesterday they added a new mod team and removed themselves. We've unrestricted the subreddit so people can post without being "approved users".

Here is the new sidebar text.

All about birds! There are some more specific subreddits about bird-related topics and we encourage you to post there when your post fits the more specific forum; /r/birds is for everything they don't cover.

We welcome:

  • Articles about birds

  • Bird art

  • Questions and discussions about birds

  • Questions and discussions about bird feeders

  • Bird photography

  • Science of birds

  • Links to media about birds

Other subreddits:

  • /r/birding focuses on birding/birdwatching. It's a great place do show birds you saw on a birding trip or hike, ask about birding equipment and practices, discuss good places to go birdwatching, talk about eBird, and related topics.

  • /r/birdpics is dedicated to posting bird photos that you've taken yourself.

  • /r/whatsthisbird is the reddit for posting pictures of birds you want to identify. If your question is "what kind of bird is this", that's the place to post! When posting to /r/whatsthisbird, always remember to include both the time (date or season) and place (general geographical location) in your post title.

  • /r/wingspan/ for the awesome, popular board game about birds.

  • Although we think there should be a separate subreddit for discussions about keeping domesticated / pet birds, /r/petbirds appears to be abandoned at this time. There are subreddits for specific species of birds people commonly keep, so you can search https://www.reddit.com/subreddits for your pet bird's species to see if there's a sub for it.

We do still allow some posts here that might better fit in one of those other subreddits, but consider whether your post more clearly fits into one of those and if so, we encourage you to post there.

[Edit Nov 15: Added /r/birdpics. Comment below if there's another major bird subreddit you think should be added to the sidebar.]

Credit the source of images (photos, art, diagrams)

We've had a number of posts since this subreddit reopened that use an image copied from elsewhere, rather than the poster's own work, and posted without credit. We've also had what seem to be AI images, posted without any indication that they're not photos.

Please note Rule 6, "Cite visual sources". We try not to remove posts where it really seems like the poster's own photograph even though they didn't say it, but please make that easier by telling whether you're claiming the image is yours. If your title doesn't indicate it (for example, by saying "I saw ..."), then add a comment to your post right after you post it to say something about your creation of the image / your taking of the photo.

I've added a bit of text to the rule about this as well.

See video. Female cardinal will not stop flying and pecking at this very specific window. Started yesterday afternoon and continued this morning bright and early 5am.

Any idea how to help it out?

How do I stop a bird from banging on my window?

This has been going on for a day and I canā€™t sleep.

Online it has ideas like putting plants i front of my window, adding a net to the outside, or brushing soap on the window. I donā€™t want to obstruct my view of the tree and the other options donā€™t sound great. Any tips?

I'm working on an owl video game called Tyto! What owl features should I add?

The player is an owlet who canā€™t fly yet, but learns how to glide.
Iā€™m planning to add combat mechanics that include diving, and maybe some dark areas where you can see the enemies, but they canā€™t see you.

Any other ideas?

The cootlings are hatching!

My local park in Bremen, Germany is full of Eurasian coots. I noticed a couple weeks ago that theyā€™d started to build nests in the pond. Yesterday I spotted a parent sitting in their nest with a single chick! (Photo taken from shore with 30x zoom; birds were not disturbed.)

Man, baby coots are ugly šŸ˜‚ in a cute way though.

What should I do with this poorly placed nest?

Hi, bird people. I hope this is the right venue for advice. Birds have decided to keep building a nest atop a light fixture on my porch. I've discarded it once, thinking I was doing my winged amigos a favor, as there's zero chance an egg would balance in it. But now it's back.

Should I just discard it again? Move it a few feet to the Japanese maple in the third pic? Thanks!

My son was at the kitchen sink and looked out the window to see a flock of wild turkeys hanging out behind my parentsā€™ house. He said they hung around for 5-6 hours. My parents live out in the country in south Texas.

Help me identify this Bird!

Ok so I found this bird outside my house with a super messed up wing and swollen eye. Donā€™t come at me for how Iā€™m holding him, I was very gentle and he was very not, so I held him like this to prevent further damage to my hands (he got me so goodšŸ˜) and provide some full body shots for the vet. Heā€™s now on his way to a wildlife centre to hopefully get all healed up but I need to know what he is. For reference I live in the Canadian prairies on an acreage, all I know for sure is that he is definitely a bird of prey.

Advice

ā€¢ Upvotes

The parent mourning doves have abandoned one baby dove behind and the other one went with the parents. I needed to bring it in because it was rainy and cold. It is 19 days old. It doesn't really like me I guess. What steps should I take and what house items can I feed it before I can buy bird food?

What to do?

Found this lil baby shivering by my pool pump today/. Unable to fly, still has baby feathers, no nest or Momma aroundā€¦. I couldnā€™t just leave him there. He looks so scared and vulnerable. I have him/her in a box with a towel right now and appears content, but I know itā€™s only a matter of time before she is hungry. I have a raininess actually right now on my front porch with newly hatched babies. I wonder if I can put this baby in that nest if the ring mom would take care of it. šŸ˜¬ Iā€™m at a loss please send help.

What bird sounds like this?

Hi all - if this is not the right place to ask, can you please direct me?

I recently heard two birds in my area (Orange, NY), which Iā€™ve never heard before and very curious as to what they are.

The first one did three consecutive whistles and sounded very close to the first two whistles of the Hunger Games call, with the third whistle not going down in tone, but up.

The second one (audio attached) also did three consecutive whistles, but with a higher pitch. Each whistle went up in pitch, with the last one stretching out. Its second call was the clearest I could record.

Tried to locate them, but both seemed to be rather high up in the trees.

Thanks!
