Which safety gadgets actually justify their cost in real world use?

After nearly getting doored last week, I’ve been re-evaluating my safety setup. I’ve tried everything from helmet mirrors to radar systems, but I’m not sure what’s actually making me safer versus just giving me data to overanalyze.

The one feature I’ve found genuinely useful is my Freedare’s anti-theft GPS. When someone tried stealing it last month, I got an alert immediately and could track its location. That’s tangible security versus theoretical benefits. What bike safety tech has actually proven its worth for you?

Cycling 30+: What’s the part of your training or routine you never seem to get right?

I’m curious - especially from the over-30 crowd who’s balancing riding with work, family, and life:

What’s the one thing you can’t seem to dial in - no matter how long you’ve been riding? That thing that nags at you, slows you down, or keeps falling through the cracks?

Could be:

• Recovery or sleep
• Nutrition
• Getting consistent
• Strength/mobility
• Fatigue creeping in
• Just not feeling “sharp” anymore

Trying to understand what challenges riders are facing beneath the surface. Really appreciate any insights.

Is 30t 12s cassete enough?

Rn I am using 11-34t one and verry satisfied with it, but I am upgrading to new groupset and it should fit max 32tooth casete. Was thinking to get shimano ultegra cs-R8101, but it is only available in 30t variant. Is that enough? I mostly ride cycle paths or during summer climbing in Beskydy.

Give me the good, the bad & the ugly.

Okay, so could anyone explain why I should or shouldn’t pay for Strava? I have been using the app for about a week and I am not sure what kind of benefits I would get from the premium membership? 🤔 but I suppose if it is cool enough I’ll pull the trigger, but as of right now I’m a little apprehensive even clicking the free month button.

Squirted on night ride

Got a new bike and have done about 50 miles on it so far. All during the day. But it was such a nice evening that I wanted to go hit the town. Did about an 8 mile ride and on the way back this car slows down and passenger squirts me with some liquid I am praying was water. Got me in the face, and I happened to be wearing clear safety glasses so it didn't get in my eyes. I couldn't believe it. I didn't give any reaction because I wanted them to think they missed.

Here's the crazy part, about 300 feet past they turn on an avenue and drop someone off/pick someone up at this house. WOW the audacity, the ballsiness. Like normally you would speed away after committing battery. Now I didn't turn down the street because I'm not about to get jumped on my bike that's worth more than their car and there's no way I'm fighting in clipless shoes. So I just called in a description of the vehicle and location and moved on. 0% chance there's any follow up.

It's so funny too because I was just reading this post from a day ago and thinking how crazy it was, like people really do that? https://www.reddit.com/r/cycling/s/w02vWMvkrJ

At the end of the day we are way happier on a bike than any punk bitch that does anything to screw with us. I didn't let it get me down at all. I will 100% be night riding again, it's such a vibe.

Should I avoid a bike with Road Boost hub?

Hi folks,

I have the option to buy a Focus Atlas 6.8 for a (I think) good price. I did a bit of research and found out that Focus is using Road Boost hubs (12x110) for the front wheel. I don't know that much about bike parts, but this seems to be a bit of an uncommon standard? Could this potentiality cause headaches in the future?

Thanks!

I've had a lot of close calls and this morning it finally happened

That's right. I hit a squirrel on my bike.

It was running across the road, panicked as I got closer and changed directions a bunch of times and then tried to dash under me. Then I felt the thumps.

The critter seemed to be ok, though. It got up and kept on running full speed.

How to get rid of an old bike

Upvotes

My beloved old women's Giant road bike has sadly reached the end of its days... which has left me wondering, if a bike isn't suitable to sell on*... what do you do with it?

Unless there any kind of vintage market for unrideable road bikes, are these beasts of burden just going in the bin/to scrap? What have other people done with their old bangers? Am based in the UK if anyone has any suggestions other than the bin, as the thought of that makes me sad :(

*Bike shop have advised me that the bits of the bike which need fixing are essentially well more than the value of the bike itself, and that they would consider it unsafe to ride as it could fail at any time ie. I'm not going to sell it onto anyone as it's a potential death trap!

How to install full fender on carbon road bike ?

Upvotes

Hi,

I'd like to install a full fender on my carbon road bike. The problem is that the bike do not have hole to install the L shape bracket of the front and rear fender.

To fix the fender STAYS , it will not be a problem since I will change the thru axle to use the Minoura FRONT Thru Axle for Fender

The fender I really like to install is Full Metal Fenders - 700x37 brecause it is a full length and it has a long mud flap.

Someone found a way to fix the L Shape Brakets ?? maybe tie zip ??

Here pic of my front fork with no hole to fix the L Shpae bracket

Thanks for help

Will drop bars strain my 2 lower back herniated discs?

Upvotes

I have two herniated discs in my lower back, I have dealt witht he pain for a year and want to get back on the road. I am looking at the Poseidon x ambition due to it being gravel, and its geometry sits more upright. I want to get drop bars but im unsure if it'll make things worse. Does anyone have expierence using drop bars with 2 herniated discs?

I like doing long rides on paths, which there are some gravel spots. I also considered a cheap bike like the trek verve 1 but im not suyre how that would be long distance.

Best dual sided power meter pedals?

Upvotes

I’ve had a look at countless articles on google, but sometimes it’s best to hear directly from those who have experienced dual sided power meter pedals. Power meter cranks aren’t something i’m going to consider at the moment.

For a start i know it isn’t a necessity, and it’s expensive, but it’s something i’m keen to purchase nonetheless (i know this is something that would likely be pointed out as no one may need it, it’s more of a want).

In terms of the dual sided power meter pedals, most seem to suggest Favero Assioma Duo, or Garmin Rally RS200 being the ‘best’ options but there are others such as Wahoo Powerlink pedals.

Is there any reason to avoid either of the Favero or Garmin ones, what would be the better option in general for accuracy and longevity?

Cheers! (Also if there’s a current reddit post with this that i’ve not found, please direct me there as don’t want to spam up multiple posts☺️)

Recipe eBook idea – looking for your opinions

Upvotes

I usually ride routes between 50–200 km, and I've often struggled with preparing food for the ride. There are tons of simple snack recipes out there, but they’re scattered across the internet, not always great, and it takes time to dig through them and find something that actually works.

So here’s my question to fellow cyclists:
Would an eBook with around 50 simple recipes for nutrient-dense cycling snacks, designed to provide solid macros during your rides, make sense to you if it cost around $9?

Or would you rather just search for things online for free?
I'm currently working on such an eBook, but I’m still debating whether it’s worth putting the time into it – or if most people would just prefer to find stuff on YouTube or Reddit themselves.

Would love to hear your honest thoughts 🙌

Fast clinchers east to mount

Upvotes

Got a new SL8 tarmac with roval CLII carbon rims. Just had a heck of a time fixing a flat with the stock s-works turbo tlr tires - I am not interested in going tubeless. I had to take the tire to the LBS to unseat the bead and even they had a very hard time removing the tire. This won’t work for me if I cannot fox a tire on the side of the road.

I am looking for recommendations a fast tire that’s easy to mount. The conti-GP5000 clinchers are (great) not that easy to mount - but I like the balance between durability and speed. Any other great tires?

Getting back to road bike riding

Upvotes

Has anyone else taken a break from riding? What did you do to get back into it?

I went out for a ride today, and everything just felt off. I used to do road biking, but I kind of lost interest after my previous bike broke—it was pretty expensive to fix.

I recently picked up a used one and have fallen back in love with riding, but everything still feels wrong (and I’m way out of shape). Does anyone have any tips? I’d really appreciate any feedback.

new bike and cycling gear

Upvotes

I've been riding a Peloton over the winter and want to get outside now that the weather is heating up. I need to buy a bike, padded shorts and a helmet.
Anything else you guys think I'm missing? Is it necessary to buy a jersey? I already have cleats from the Peloton & I'm thinking of buying a used bike and probably a used helmet.

My range for all this new equipment is probably about $700. I have no ambition to compete, just boost my cardio health and want to make sure I get a bike nice enough that I'm not dreaming of buying a new one. Also I'm only interested in biking on the road, not mountain biking at this moment.

Any information is appreciated, and if I'm asking in the wrong spot just point me in the right direction! Thank you!

Why does my bar tape finishing tape always want to unstick itself?

Every single time I change my bar tape, the finishing tape to clean up the end always disconnects a little bit and doesn’t want to seal well. The last 1/2 inch to an inch is always disconnecting on me and it’s annoying. Is it a technique thing? What am I doing wrong?

Used WD40 to clean chain, do I need to worry about it messing up my bottom bracket or freewheel?

I rode through a particularly sandy road yesterday and had gunk all over my chain. Had WD40 on hand, and thought it would work to clean the gunk off since it's a degreaser. I sprayed a little on the chain and cassette, scrubbed with an old toothbrush, and put on chain lube after it dried.

My question is, how bad is it for the lube in my freewheel and bottom bracket? I've seen conflicting accounts online, with some people swearing by WD40 for chain cleaning, and others saying it will ruin the bottom bracket and freewheel bearings.

Help choosing a bike

Hey everyone, I'm looking at buying a used hybrid road bike (hopefully this is okay to ask here) for everyday commuting, weekend rides, and indoor workouts with a bike trainer during the winter. I prefer something that is more reliable than about performance, so I was looking at hybrid road bikes. However, I don't know anything about bike models, parts, etc., so I was hoping for some advice on what to look out for on Facebook marketplace.

There is a Marin Muirwoods road bike for 300cad on marketplace that looks to be in good condition. I was going to try to haggle a bit. Any thoughts?

Mechanical 105 or Di Ultegra?

Option 1: mechanical 105 - $4500 Option 2: Di Ultegra - $7000

Same bike and other components (wheels etc…)

Is it really worth the extra $2500 to go from mechanical 105 to Di Ultegra?

Removing logos

Hello everyone, I want to remove the logos from the stem, handlebar, and seatpost to get a clean look. Has anyone tried doing this before?

What’s the best way to remove these decals without damaging the surface?

Recording devices for reporting reckless driving?

I like to keep my rides simple. I take my phone with me, but it stays in my back pocket. I do my best to be a respectful rider: I stop at red lights and stop signs, stick to bike lanes when available, and when they aren’t, I hug the shoulder. I always make sure to give a wave of thanks to courteous drivers who slow down and give space when passing.

That’s why it really irks me when I nearly get clipped by someone being reckless. It puts me in a bad mood and ruins my ride. I’ve encountered all kinds: idiots in sports cars, entitled jerks in oversized SUVs, the “I own the road because I drive a Lexus” types, and don’t even get me started on big Altima energy. Heck, even school buses sometimes!

When this happens, I’d at least like to get some sense of justice by submitting video evidence to the police so that these drivers can get a ticket and points. Has anyone here done this before? If so, what devices do you recommend for recording incidents while riding?

The euphoria of a nice weekend ride

This morning, for the first time in a long while, I was able to get out for a longer ride. Not quite an hour in, I crested a hill and descended into some quiet woods. First pale green leaves coming out all around. Bright purple flowering shrubs. Not a breath of wind, no other cyclists, no cars. Just me, the bike, and this little two-lane road in the woods. It was the most idyllic cycling moment--like something from a dream. I was hit all at once with this wave of euphoria that is unique, I think, to this hobby. Said to myself, out loud, "Damn. This is nice." Yes, I'm a nerd.

Just wanted to share that moment and hope that others can find joy on the bike, too. It feels important to find happiness wherever we can these days.

Anyone else had a "damn, this is nice" moment lately?
