Mobility aid in public for the first time, very nervous

So, I'm on the young side, like barely 18, and I'm going to a parade today, this is just a fun little activity with me and my mom so we can keep in touch, I have kandi all down my cane, it's super colorful and I love it, but I haven't actually used it in a crowded space and I'm nervous, does anyone here have any tips? Thanks!

Omg a kandi cane!!

It's normal to be nervous, especially your first time out with it. Having a loved one with you is great, talk with her about how you feel, and how you want her support if someone gives you trouble. Maybe have a couple simple responses ready, like "thats a weird thing to say to someone you don't know."

But remember, it's rare that anyone has a problem. In a crowded event, most people won't notice you, or just barely when they look in your general direction. For those who would say something to you, it's more likely to be like "am i in your way?" or "nice cane!"

Thank you, I’m on my way home from the event and there were a few little kids that played with the kandi, I got a few compliments, and no negative comments, but I’ll keep your advice in mind next time!

You’ve got this! Just use it proudly and confidently. If anyone questions you it’s really none of their business. But I get it. I usually just say “oh yeah you lnow ive just been having a hard time with stamina lately (give minimal details that explains enough that they are satisfied but not so much that it creates more uncomfortably questions) It helps me hang out longer!” It’s annoying to mask but I put on a smile and just say “I’m fine… I use it so I can be out otherwise I wouldn’t come out, but I feel great with it, and look it sparkles!” (Mine sparkles.) again, I get it. It’s annoying. And they shouldn’t be asking anyway. But sometimes it’s just easier to address it and move on.

Similar to what others have said, most people won’t care at all. Some will stare, I get a lot of stares especially from old people, but it’s often not in a malicious way. Additionally, I’ve found that when I go to events and such, I’m rarely the only young person using a mobility aid there!

Be aware in crowded areas, chances are people aren't remotely going to pay attention to you or notice the cane and will bump into you. Best to be aware so you don't get knocked over by someone oblivious

99.999% of people really don’t care. I use a cane too; nobody gives a shit. The very few that do are giant assholes, but you were going to have to risk running into giant assholes anyway. There’s not enough of that type to make a difference in your life.
