20+ year old Stage Custom still going strong.

I got back into drumming a couple of years ago after a 10 year hiatus. Here's my Yamaha Stage Custom which I bought as an ex-demo kit in 2003. I'm slowly upgrading it with used finds from FB Marketplace/eBay/Reverb.

Shell sizes are 10, 12, 14 and 20".

The snare is a limited edition Tama monoply of a similar vintage. 14" x 5.5" walnut shell with cherry wood hoops.

Sabian cymbals L-R:

14" AAX Stage hats 18" AAX Thin Crash 21" HHX Groove Ride 17" HHX X-treme Crash 16" AAX Stage Crash.

I have a 10" AAX o-zone splash on the way and then I think I'm done (for now at least)!

Drumming and making music with friends is just the best! I''m so happy to be back doing this again and stoked for many more years of it to come.

Won this 1969 18” bop kit for a price that usually can’t even cover the 14” floor.

It has the original Gold Sparkle wrap and even the cases.

Sadly a pearl mount, but the original mount should cover that nicely.

The hunt for a cymbal arm top part, and mount has begun.

My sister decided to “make your drum look pretty” does this affect the tone?

While I was out today my sister did some illustration on my snare, just wanted to know if it’ll affect the tone at all? I kinda like what she did in a weird chaotic way so I don’t really wanna get a new head. I don’t tend to use dampening cos I like the raw sound.

Finally did something with a 7 inch birchTama shell I have been holding onto for 20 plus years.

Shell was covered in chrome wrap so the wood was ok under it. Was my first pro snare I got when I was 16. Always meant to make it into a proper snare and finally did.

New little hack for practicing

Sup yall. Just recently noticed that YouTube expanded their playback speed options from just the regular .25, .5, .75x options to now have a slider which is adjustable down to the 0.05x increment. So lately I’ve just been cueing up every practice video like a metronome or those long play along jam tracks at 100bpm and then you can just use the slider to go to 105, 110, 115, etc with the 1.05x, 1.1x etc options. Very small little hack but it’s cool because you can increase speed over time without having to load up a whole new video.

I also have absolutely nothing to do today so figured I’d take the time to share haha

Finally about to wrap my kit after wanting to do it for years!

Ordered a bunch of the red diamond wrap from eBay to finally wrap my kit!! I’m super excited. Has anyone wrapped there kit with this wrap? If so pictures of it would be cool to see. Can’t find any on the interwebs. Also does anyone have any tips or tricks for getting it smooth and looking nice around these tama logos since I can’t take them out. Really nervous about what I’m going to do to get it looking clean and flush around them.

Does my right hand look awkward?

Recently started filming myself practicing. Even though my right hand feels better than my left, it seems to look a bit awkward. I’m sticking out my elbow and seem to be playing from an unnatural angle. My left hand also seems to sound cleaner.

What do you guys think? Am I over analyzing?

My electronic drum set has reignited my love for drumming

I am shocked at this to be honest. I’ve been drumming for a couple of decades and ever since I had my first kid 7 years ago, I particularly slowed down playing and then the last few years, pretty much stopped. Never had time. Couldn’t play at night. When I did play the kids would come down and then it just didn’t work.

Anyway, got myself a Simmons titan 70 setup. Holy crap! I never ever would have expected an electronic drum set to sound this good and be this fun. I know this only a mid tier set but my expectations were well exceeded.

I’m just so happy to be playing again and enjoying it. For anyone who may find their interest slipping, this did the trick for me. I couldn’t let go of my acoustic set so still getting that stored somewhere in the house lol

Paiste Masters 22" Dark Ride

I'm looking at purchasing a new ride, wondered if anyone has had any experience with the Paiste Masters 22 Dark Ride. I'm also looking into the Dark 22 Crash Ride or the 602 ME 22. What is everyones opinions on these cymbals?

“Burying”/“choking” the snare

How/why do certain drummers “bury” the snare when they play? Basically, when they hit the snare and there is no rebound back up, i.e. the snare stays “buried” (similar to how a bass drum beater can be “buried”). EDIT: Specifically, they do this technique during rimshots. Because of their influence, I use almost exclusively rimshots on the backbeat if the music calls for it.

I noticed two of my favorite drummers - John Bonham and Levon Helm - doing this often. I’ve heard that this technique causes the snare to have a “warmer” sound than if natural rebound were applied.

I’ve tried doing this myself, but no matter what I do, I can’t. It feels way too strange to me, and sometimes hurts because it feels like all the energy is going straight through my hand rather than the stick as it normally does when held a little loosely (and it rebounds back as a result).

I really want to learn this technique to get this sound. Any ideas?

Also, is there an actual term for this technique?

Where should I begin on the practice pad?

I’ve been drumming on my own kit for about three years now. I think I’ve gotten quite good, as I can play along to and learn a lot of rock and pop songs relatively quickly. Over this time, for example, I can play the entirety of Led Zeppelin‘s and The Band’s discography, pretty much note for note, with the exceptions of some very difficult/fast fills.

But I still consider myself an intermediate player, if not, an “advanced beginner”. I don’t feel like I am very fluid around the kit, and I’m not even sure if my technique is that great. My hand speed is good, and my weak hand is getting better, but I would really like some more freedom with fills and improvisation, as well as just feeling more confident overall. To reiterate to my point about drumming along to songs, I learned drumming by drumming along to the main beats, not by improvising. I feel like this kind of locked me onto a weird “growth plateau” of sorts.

I heard that learning rudiments on the practice pad is essential for progression and confidence with technique and sticking patterns that can be applied around the kit. On the pad, I have tried working solely on singles, but when I get to doubles, I kind of just fall apart. So this means I can’t even progress to paradiddles. It feels like I have learned to “run” on the kit before learning to “walk“ on the pad.

How can I make progress? Unfortunately, I don’t have the current funds to afford drum lessons, so I figured asking here would be a good start.

Is shell resonance really an important factor?

Upvotes

If the shell is made of maple(and other types of materials as well), especially the more expensive ones, the more resonance they have in the same head.

Of course, the more expensive the shell pack, the more solid the hardware.

the more expensive the shell pack, the more resonance it has. Many brands also tout “more resonance and sustain” as an advantage about the expensive shell packs. (Some people buy those expensive "resonant shells" and put a thick 2-ply head, gels, tape on them)

Is resonance really an important factor in shells? There are cases where a sound with less resonance is suitable, such as the lo-fi genre. and in fact, the resonance heard in the sound source is the result of post-processing.

Anyway, is the resonance of the shell an important factor that justifies the price being several times higher than that of a poplar shell?

Technique advice for ugly RIGHT hand on fast singles

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello guys. I’d really like someones input on how to fix my right hand when it comes to fast singles. I’m left handed, so naturally my left will be faster, but the issue here is a technical one, and i’m struggling to fix it.

It seems like my right hand at this speed opens up and the stick just completely loses balance on my index cuticle and eventually falls off completely.

Could this be a finger strength issue? I hate how I unconsciously open up my right hand so much and can’t control my technique at that speed. Any advice would be appreciated.
