Social Meeting People & Making Friends in Edinburgh: The Edinburgh Social Discord!

Hi there!

If you're looking to meet people in Edinburgh and make friends, there is a very large and active social community here that chats, organizes and meets up frequently through an app called Discord!

You may already be familiar with Discord, but if not, it's basically a modern-day chat application you can use on your phone or PC.

We have a wide variety of meetups that are hosted every week - From the book club, to bouldering, to pub nights, board game events, quizzes, ceilidhs, dinners out, walks in the hills, concerts and gigs, etc etc! There's always something going on, and all events are organized, hosted and attended by people like you.

The community is restricted to adults 18 years of age or older. We are very welcoming to newcomers, and strive to create a fun and kind space to chat online in between going out for meetups and events in person. If that sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, I'd encourage you to join and say hi!

Join here: Edinburgh Social Discord

Hopefully see you at one of our next events!

Event Anti-Trump Protests?

Hello All. Does anyone know where one can find out about Anti-Trump/Musk protests? I'm an American EXPAT/Immigrant living here and am personally sick of how my country's decisions ripple into yours.

Question Eye laser surgery (LASEK) at Edinburgh Optical Express or somewhere else ?

Upvotes

Hi guys,

I am considering eye laser surgery to improve my poor eyesight and would appreciate any feedback or recommendations.

I’m in my late twenties, and I’ve struggled with astigmatism and myopia my whole life, with a total of -6 in each eye.

I had an appointment at Optical Express in Haymarket last year and was quoted £5,000 for treatment on both eyes. Due to medical reasons, I had to wait a year to proceed. When I returned recently, the quote had increased by £1000 for the same procedure. The waiting time to see the ophthalmologist was also much longer this time. I waited about 20 minutes to be called for tests and then around 2 hours for the ophthalmologist to review my results. I ended up spending almost 4 hours there, compared to just 1.5 hours last year.

The extended wait times indicate a serious lack of staff, and the price hike is quite alarming. Additionally, one of the employees (I won’t name their job title keep their identity safe but let’s just say they knew what they were talking about and seen my file) advised me “off the record” to check out other clinics for lower prices. All of this combined has made me uncertain about going to Optical Express for the procedure.

Has anyone recently had eye surgery there and would you recommend it? Also, has anyone compared prices and found a significant difference between Optical Express and other UK clinics? Also if a staff member at a clinic suggested you shop around instead of booking with them right away, would you still consider them, or would you see it as a red flag to avoid them?

Discussion I might’ve accidentally creeped out/scared a barista.

Hi, I’m feeling like shit because, like the tile says, I accidentally might’ve scared the barista at my local cafe.

This happened this evening.

I went to my local cafe to get a coffee to go. I walked in and noticed the barista cleaning up as it was just about closing time. She seemed friendly and was smiling. She took my order and I got to making some odd small talk.

As it was towards the end of their day, I said something along the lines of, “so it’s just you at the moment closing up”. She kinda paused and said no, and that there was “someone else in the kitchen”. Her demeanour sort of changed. I thanked her, took my coffee and was on my way.

I realised a good while after I left, that what I said could’ve come across as predatory and now I feel extremely horrible. I can’t even go back to apologise, because they closed at 5pm.

So if you’re on Reddit, barista lady, and you happened to come across this post please know I profusely apologies for what I said and how it might’ve come across. I am aware of about all the shit women go through on a day to day basis and I sincerely hope you understand, that was not at all my intentions with that statement.

So that’s my Saturday r/edinburgh. How’s your Saturday going?

Discussion Any Calisthenics Classes in Edinburgh?

Upvotes

Hey folks, I’ve been getting into bodyweight training lately and was wondering if there are any calisthenics classes or groups in Edinburgh? Ideally looking for something beginner-friendly — could be indoor or outdoor, just want to learn proper form and get stronger with others.

Thanks in advance!

Question Is getting your rope access level 1 worth it?

Hi everyone Been looking at career options at 31 as I am a bit stumped on what to do and rope access is coming up quite a bit, I need something physical and with a good routine. I have the money to do a course and was just reaching out to anyone who has done it/has experience in the industry? Is it tough to get a job once passed in Edinburgh? Cheers!

Discussion Ideas for saving an upright piano

We have a vintage upright piano that we've taken the sad decision to part with as we need more space now.

We don't want anything for it but cannot seem to give it away on Gumtree etc.

If we can't give it away the only option will be to break it up and dispose of it. Can anyone think of a more constructive solution?

Thanks

Question Trafalgar Tap / Lord Nelson pub

Noticed it's been shut for a few weeks now with a 'for sale' sign put up. They weren't trading for long. Does anyone know what happened and whether or not the site will remain a pub? I'm not often in the area but enjoyed that pub. The Village closing was a loss to the area and Oceana is not quite my thing, so it would be a shame to lose that venue too

Rant Anyone else with an irrational hate of Victor Hugo at the Shore?

When you occupy possibly the most prime spot at the Shore for evening drinking in the sun, you CANNOT close at 4/5pm. Everywhere along the water is rammed and there's a space with loads of outdoor seating closed?? They don't deserve the spot and it makes me ragey.

Question Most romantic spots in the city or nearby

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are planning on visiting Edinburgh in June and we are very excited for our trip as it will be our first time in Scotland. What she does not know is that I am also planning on proposing during our trip, so I was wondering if you had any recommandation for a romantic spot to do so. It can be a restaurant, but preferably an outdoor spot

Thanks in advance for your recommandations !

Discussion Social workers, healthcare workers, etc.: how common is it for a client or patient to need Polish interpretation?

I’m an American social worker and I’m fluent in Polish. It used to be pretty helpful in my career here in Chicago, but in recent years, a lot of our Polish population has moved out of the city.

I’m married to a native Leither and we’re eventually moving to Edinburgh. I know that there is a pretty sizable Polish community there. I’m curious—would my language skills be useful in a job?

Question How to get rid of ikea furniture

Hello!

I’m moving house and I’m trying to get rid of some ikea furniture items that I no longer need. Problem is, some of these boards are over 6ft and don’t fit in my car so I can’t take them to the recycling centres.

Question - is it bad form to leave these pieces of wood out by the communal bins for the bin men to pick up? Would they just leave them or take them? I tried a council collection but all appointments are after the move out date.

I live on a main road in a block of flats so all the bins are communal.

Question Disposing of scrap metal

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello, For context me and my flatmate moved into this flat last summer and the flat came with a bunch of junk in the garden area (as pictured*) Was just wondering if anyone knew how to dispose of these as neither of us drive so driving to a tip isn’t an option and as well as this we have no way to dismantle any of the metal to get it through the flat to dispose of it. *Reddit won’t let me upload another photo however there is also a rusted old hammock frame, an old non functioning exercise bike as well as an old regular bike. Any advice is much appreciated

Discussion Cool places in Leith?

Hiya, I've just moved from Australia and I'm looking for some cool restaurants/bars/pubs/stores/cafes etc in the Leith area. Just places that you love and can't wait to recommend. Even community-driven/"third space" kind of places would be great.

Bonus points for places that have regular events; it would be great to meet new people.

For reference, some I've heard about/been to so far include: - Newbarns Taproom - Cornelius - Ancient Robot Games - Argonaut Books - Paloma - Moonwake.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there

My sister is looking for some kind of sewing group / circle at intermediate level. Something not too expensive and all ages welcome. Anything related would be helpful too; I.e embroidery & crochet - she’s skilled in both and is just looking for a group / club to enjoy her hobby with. Anywhere in the city is fine. Many thanks!

Question Anyone know what happened to the Loon Fung?

Does anyone know what happened to the Loon Fung on Warriston Place? It closed January/February for renovations and was due to reopen Valentines Day according to their website then March 27th according to Google. Their website is still up saying it’s closed for renovations.

Went today and it’s completely gone, with a new (but unopened by the looks of things) restaurant ‘Viet Taste’ in its place.

Social Community theatre in Edinburgh

Just looking for insights on the community theatre scene in Edinburgh. I acted a bit back in my university days, and would like to get back into it in a lowkey amateur setting. A web search turns up several community theatres -- does anyone know about the vibe at these organisations? How welcoming are they to newcomers? Is there a decent chance of being cast even in a bit role? I'm definitely not interested in competing for roles with professionals or those aspiring to acting careers!
