Today in Scottish History

6 April 1320: The Declaration of Arbroath, drafted by Bernard, Abbot of Arbroath, is addressed to the Pope in an effort to have him recognise Robert the Bruce as King of Scotland (and remove the excommunication that followed his murder of the Red Comyn in a church). It defines the relationship between the Scottish King and the Scots people.

Does English water give you the shits?

Upvotes

Grew up near Edinburgh, lived in Glasgow for 6 years. Never had any issues with the tap water unless I went down to England, then it would give me a bad stomach.

I mentioned this on another UK sub and now have a bunch of English people accusing me of “nonsense.” Is this a thing?

Would you support a £10-£15 billion plan to increase the size of Glasgow Subway’s tunnels for future expansion?

Reading an interesting report from a few years back. To bring the Subway up to modern standard and track gauge, and prepare for future (uncosted) track and station, would cost around £10b (I say £15b as time has passed since the report).

Report covers the dozen or so reviews the Subway’s had over the years, expansion always held back due to cost.

What do people think? If Glasgow’s ever to become a proper European city, I’d say just get on with it.

Post image
Upvotes

hi everyone! i was just at Queens Park and happened to leave my film camera (the one pictured above, it currently has a Kodak Ultramax film roll in it) in one of the benches in front of the large pond.

i asked around and no one saw it. checked the cafe van and they don't have it.

i'm not in any Facebook groups so i could only post here.

if anyone happened to see or did grab it can you please let me know?

this camera means a lot to me. anyone would be graciously rewarded if you can return it!

Facebook group level shitpost Drygate Bearface stockists?

I need your help. Due to poor impulse control, I drank two tins of Bearface my partner asked me to leave for her. I assumed it'd be easy to replace them. But Drygate don't seem to stock them. ALDI and Tesco used to, but now don't.

I can't stress how much I need your help. This isn't the first time I've pilfered foodstuffs. Jaffas? Yeah I'll nab them. The last hot cross bun? Can't leave that near me. I gave my solemn word that I would not drink those beers... but it was sunny and the alternative was a red wine, which felt inappropriate.

Loch swimming

Upvotes

My car has finally given up and with the weather turning nice I still want to be able to go loch swimming! Can anyone suggest good places to swim that aren't a pain to get to on public transport around Glasgow? Thinking an hour tops on a train, if that's possible!

Is staying at the Blythswood worth it?

Will be visiting the area for three days and my Amex card is running a promo for the Blythswood. I’ve read a ton of reviews and some recent ones mention it being a bit dated. It’ll be our first time visiting Glasgow so we plan to explore the area but don’t mind enjoying a nice hotel too. Especially since this will be the end of our entire trip so we may be a bit tired and ready for some luxury. I just don’t want to be disappointed in the extra cost if it’s not as nice as it seems.

Usually, I’d stay at something like the AC Marriott. Thank you for any latest insights!

It is apparently Tartan Day today.

I have been on this rock for 40 years, and this is the first time I have ever heard of Tartan Day. Is it some sort of styrofoam nonsense, or am I genuinely just a daft wank for not knowing about it?

Where to find charging points in town on a Sunday?

I have disabilities and need to carry a fully charged phone at all times. Unfortunately my powerbank has just died and need to find a place to charge my phone tonight as I'm in town and I'm meeting a friend for dinner at 6pm. Can anyone think of any cafes that'll be open where I can charge my phone?

Living in Fernhill

Saw a great house in Fernhill. Having a hard time buying southside Glasgow and surrounding area…

Tempted by the value of this house in Fernhill. Anyone live there/has lived there? Anybody sold a house there? Did you have any issues selling? Is the area still considered rough?

Thanks

Car valet and modern slavery

I was listening to something on the BBC that mentioned that car washes are the biggest sites of people smuggling and modern slavery in the uk.

Since hearing this I haven't had my car valeted. As a result its fairly gross now. I have tried hoovering it with those vacuums at the garage but they do nothing.

I'm not sure how to find a legit business that isn't linked to trafficking. But I'd really like to have my car cleaned.

I'm wondering if people have any insight on how this is in Glasgow? I suspect the one I used to go to is dodgy at the least, cash only, 3 people working on the car at once (so probably earning less than minimum wage), only 1 of them could speak any English. Are there things being done to help these people?

Also if anyone has any recommendations for legit businesses or tips on what to look for to avoid accidentally supporting businesses involved in trafficking that would be great. Based in the southside

Are cottage flats in Glasgow worth buying?

Considering buying a cottage flat in Kings park, good price, good location and good space. The only cons are:

  1. The kitchen is very small but I can live with that.

  2. I’ve heard the sound insulation is really bad, although during the viewing I haven’t noticed any excessive noise from neighbours.

Are these a good buy? Is there anything I should look out for? And are there any sound insulation solutions for these that I should keep in mind?

(Lower cottage btw, stairs outside lead to upper flat)
