3) NO Advertisements

4) NO Fundraising

5) NO Breed misinformation or hate

6) NO suggestions of theft, destruction of property, assault, or similar illegal activities

If you see a user violating any of these rules, please utilize the "Report" feature, so the mod team can quickly take action.

In addition, you can now sort posts by flair type, and the most exciting update - you can now use comments to attach a photo. So keep sharing those great big floofs!

Discussion No breaks allowed

Curious as to if any of your pyrs allow you to just cuddle them. My girl loves being pet and comes up every morning for it but as soon as I stop for even a second she’s nudging me to keep going and if I don’t give in she promptly hops down and moves on. After big days of activity she will fall asleep cuddled up on the bed but it’s a rarity.

Are most pyrs this way or do some of you get to enjoy your pups cuddled up without actively needing to pet them without break?

She is 15 weeks old as of this past Friday (4/4/25) and her favorite things as of these past few weeks are: climbing the hill in our backyard (we call it Maggie’s Mountain), being a good girl in the car and napping with her legs against the wall so when she dreams her nails make this awful scratching sound. She’s allowed to take real walks as of Tuesday since she got her second round of vaccines, and we think she’s going to love that!

Advice/Help Help! My 4-1/2 mo old won’t stop biting!

I adopted my sweet Silvanus- Silly for short - when he was 13 weeks old. He’s gone from being an adorable baby polar bear to a baby land shark. He’s now 4 1/2 months old and a few weeks ago he started biting. He’s playing, but no matter how loudly I “yelp” he still bites very hard and has broken the skin, leaving me bleeding several times. I’m very worried he’s going to bite a person, especially a child. I stop play, redirect him to toys and give him time outs, but often times when I take him out of time out, he starts biting me again. Sometimes I resort to putting him in his crate. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this typical of Pyrs? If so, how did you resolve it?

Sometimes we literally cry because we love him so much and think he’s the most beautiful creature on the planet. Since I know we’re insanely biased, just curious if you guys also think he’s handsome.

She's got some anxiety around nail clipping and leashes. Nothing serious, but I feel like the right combo of bad circumstances could push her to serious. We work with her at home with praise and treats, but grooming well and quickly is a skill and she really just needed to get all 4 paws clipped. Her groomer was amazing about it and said he would take his time. She was able to get through the whole service!

Advice/Help Pyr toy recs?

Post image

I need recommendations on dog toys for my 3/4year old Great Pyr, Winnie.

She loves bones & anything having to do with treats. She also will sometimes chew wash clothes, shred pads & diapers, etc, while we're gone. But neither she nor any other of the Pyrs I've had like fetch or tug of war. They also don't really like stuffed animal/sqeaker kind of toys. I need stuff she can play with alone or with her brother, during the work day.

Advice/Help Animal control thinks my good girl is too good at her job

Post image

This is my 18 month old good girl that I got to do what her breed does best, protect my livestock. I live on a 6 acre USDA registered farm outside of city limits, and after my old livestock dog passed we started losing animals to wildlife and the neighbor’s dogs. This beauty came in to live outside and keep bad guys out of the property and she’s done a perfect job so far.

Today I came home to an animal control notice saying she can’t bark because only “farm animals” can make noise. Since I’m a registered farm and she’s doing her job, can I make the argument that she’s farm equipment? Has anyone dealt with something similar?

Advice/Help Destructive chewing help 🆘

Post image

Hello! Our newly-rescued (2 months in) 1.5 year old pyr-lab mix has developed a chewing problem. She started chewing her own bedding, our bedding, and our rug. Basically anything soft that can be pulled apart piece by piece. This happens if she is left alone for even just a minute—like quick enough for me to go to the bathroom and I come back out and she’s chewing the rug. I kinda hate the whole “they chew because they’re bored” thing because she gets what I think is plenty of exercise—at least 60-90 minutes a day, usually a 30-60 minute morning walk, 3 additional 15-20 minute potty walks, and 45-60 minutes playing with other dogs at the park. We also pay plenty of attention to her all day long and work on tricks periodically. All of her toys are super chew toys, supposedly indestructible. Also, before you suggest putting everything away, we can’t. lol we live in a lofted NYC apartment. Our bedroom is blocked off now and we took her bedding out of her crate, but the rug is just like, where we live.

Should we be giving her toys that she’s allowed to destroy so she chooses those instead of our things? Does she need different textures to explore? Is she truly bored and not getting enough exercise/stimulation? Is she just doing this to spite me? We love her, she’s the sweetest baby ever but the chewing is driving us insane and I’m not sure we have much more time to devote to giving her exercise than we already do. Looking for any suggestions or simply to commiserate. Thank you! Pic of our Honey girl for tax purposes

Discussion She's Scared

This is Honey, 3 month old Retriever/Pyr mix, we got her at 9 weeks. Took her a bit to settle in, but now can't leave any of us alone, and had been a great pup.

The last 2 weeks though it's been a struggle to get her to walk. She asks to go outside, but doesn't want to walk through the neighborhood, once we finally make out to the sidewalk, she wines and tries to go back home. Sometimes she gives in and continues to walk, sometimes she will tries to pull us back home. Is this something she may grow out of?

I appreciated all the people caring enough and commenting on my first post. We lost our girl almost a month ago due to DKA (severe diabetes) at almost 12 year old. We miss her, yes including all those hair bunnies ( if you have a great Pyrenees mix you know what I’m talking about). We didn’t have a lot of time to process and mourn as we have a newborn, the past two days she seems to be on my mind a lot.

Im grateful to have spend time we did together, we were blessed to have found her.

In 2016 I was just starting to date my wife had just moved to my apartment and was feeing like I needed something to look forward to at the end of my day. Little did I know I would instantly fall in love with this dog. She just got moved from a kill shelter in Texas. I randomly looked for a shelter and came across one I liked. They opened the gate and i kneeled, she came to me and put her paw on my knee, stared into my soul and I knew this was gonna be my buddy ( little did I know she did that with everyone). Since that day we took her everywhere, she was so well behaved. Mountains, camping, hikes, road trips or even just a casual run to the store…. She loved just being around. She was my furry soul mate. The glue that bonded my family and I will forever be changed because of her. As my wife said these two things :” She was the glue in the beginning, who knows where we would have ended up without her” the other :” Once our baby was born, she knew we would be ok and decided to go, knowing her mission was done.”

She was the dog that turned me into a dog person. She was “our dog” in a time where my wife and I truly could give her ALL of us. No dog will replace her and the next one to bless our home will be my daughters. Making our Khaleesi truly the OG.

Rest in peace my old friend. May your body be rejuvenated and may you run as free as you are wild. Dedicated song: Chris Stapleton “Maggie”

Advice/Help Behavior change at night

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hi all, we adopted this sweet girl a couple of weeks ago from the shelter. She’s 5 and was previously a working dog on a farm.

During the day she is very playful, cuddly and ignores our senior cat so she can do her own thing unbothered.

At night we’ve noticed a change in her behavior. She has snapped a couple of times at my partner or I (a warning bite, only leaving indentations of her teeth). It happened when we were both petting her on the couch and when my partner was trying to be playful with her. She will also make this low growling noise randomly while someone is petting her, so we will immediately stop to give her space. Lastly, she has lunged at our cat a couple of times (not biting, just moving very quickly toward her). We just put together that all of these instances have been at night.

Has anyone experienced this? I’m assuming she was expected to “work” at night on the farm maybe and she’s confused that she’s not doing that anymore? Any insight is appreciated!

Advice/Help Re-home advice for my GP

Hello, I’m unfortunately looking for a new home for my sweet 5 year-old Great Pyrenees. I would greatly appreciate any advice/leads any of you may have.

Our situation: We live in Florida. We need to spend half the year out of the country to help with my husband’s aging parents. It is crazy money to board our dog and we cannot afford to do this for multiple months a year over the next few years. It also just wouldn’t be fair to her to live away from home for a significant portion of the year.

I understand the mainstream advice is to work with a rescue, however, our local rescues are full with dogs on their books long periods. I cannot stomach leaving her at a rescue knowing she might be there for a year or two. We looked into other highly regarded rescues around the U.S but it seems you cannot work with them unless you are a resident of that state.

So, I’m trying to network and find her a loving home on my own. I will do my due diligence to ensure her new owner is trustworthy. If you have any advice, please reach out to me. She has been well looked after with a good diet and exercise for her whole life so she’s in solid health. She has not been trained to guard livestock but she has been a great guardian of our home. Up to date on all her shots, potty trained, great with kids, so loving and loyal, she’s the quintessential Pyrenees. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Advice/Help Advice Needed

I’ve got a Rottie/Pyr Mix, my first time owning any dog breed outside of GSDs. I’ve trained many Shepherds/Malinois as I used to do security contracts training and handling SA dogs. The training style that works for them DOES NOT work for her. From what I understand Pyrs are not people pleasers and are a more independent dog breed. I’ve been able to teach her the basics but no matter what methods I try she refuses to be house trained. She will hold in the piss when outside just to beeline straight for my carpeted living room . Anyone have any tips?
