Look here if you found a hummingbird that might need your help

I’ve created a troubleshooting tool that walks you through determining if a hummingbird needs your help, and if it does, basic first aid you can provide so that you have time to get the hummingbird to your nearest wildlife center or hummingbird rehabilitator. It is on my mentor’s website, IFoundAHummingbird.com

At the end of nearly every process, there is a list of resources including hummingbird rehabilitators and wildlife centers that either take hummingbirds or will connect you with someone who does.

It covers the most common issues we are called about.

  • Hummingbirds trapped indoors

  • Cat Caught

  • Window Strikes

  • Sitting at Feeders Too Long

  • Stuck To A Glue Trap/Sticky or Oily Substance On Feathers

  • Abandoned Nests or Babies

For the love of hummingbirds, PLEASE stop interfering with hummingbird babies until a rehabber tells you to!

All of the hummingbird rehabbers I know, myself included, are already completely overwhelmed with baby hummers. 90% of them would not have needed to come in for care if the humans who found them had called us before they cut the nest down or put the fledglings in their cars and drove them an hour away from their moms.

In past years, we don't feel overwhelmed like this until June or July. If this continues, there won't be anyone left who is able to take them. We have to limit the amount of hummingbirds in our care, which means sooner than later, baby birds will die and it is completely preventable.

Wildlife centers rely on satellites, which are volunteers, to care for baby hummingbirds in their homes. Babies need to be hand fed every 30 minutes 5am-9pm until they start to fly and can be taught to self feed from syringes. Every hatchling requires hand feeding for 2-3 weeks, nestlings for 1-2 weeks, fledglings for a few days. Multiply that by 10, 20, 30, 40 and then add in constant phone calls from the public. We are human. I wish we had super powers, but we don't.

Yes, some photos are edited, and yes I know I need to clean my camera censor. But feel free to provide camera/photography/editing tips.

Hummers no longer coming with new sugar

I’m a fairly new birder and for the past 4 months have been feeding the hummers on my balcony.

It took them a few days to find the feeder, but since then there were always several hummers around. I recently ran out of the cane sugar I used (1/4 cup sugar and 1 cup water) and got a new brand. Since the change, the hummers have been absent. I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence, or if something is wrong. I make sure to change my nectar every 5 days or so (I live in SoCal), using the same recipe as before, and always clean the feeder well. Any advice? I put a photo of the new sugar I’m using and my little friend Roger who doesn’t come around anymore 😔

Is this a fledgling? She was hopping and not flying that I could see. She also stood at the feeder for a long time.

Bird buddy hummingbird feeder

Does anyone use the Bird Buddy hummingbird feeder? Is it any good? Easy to clean / refill? Safe for the birds?

I live in south Florida so we’d only use it for 5-6 months out of the year. We usually get 2-3 birds max in our yard.

She must have been a bit stunned after hitting my buildings window. She felt better after a few feedings and 2 hours of having me run in and out my dorm thinking she would finally fly away. After her last feeding she was strong enough to fly off my hand to my back to a bush and away.

My neighbor has a nest with twins from a Mom who hung around my yard during fall and winter. I named her Bonita because of her beautiful throat patch. My phone has a really good zoom, so I was farther away from them than it appears.

Spotted this little guy swooping and chirping around a park nearby. He flys to the same bush every few minutes; even if I’m standing near it.

My momma hummer, Robyn, left her babies for the first time last night. Babies did really well❤️.

It has been 10 days since they were born, apparently right on time. I looked through the camera this morning, both babies good, and I already caught her feeding them ❤️

Got an Apple Pencil recently and had fun sketching the neighborhood birds, including my resident Allen’s.

Thanks for looking! :)
