The current human lifespan is insufficient for the modern world.
The modern world is structured in a way that makes the traditional human lifespan increasingly inadequate, both for individuals and the global economy. Curing aging is not just about personal freedom, it’s not purely a moral issue either. It’s an economic necessity. Many countries economies are collapsing due to an aging population, Japan, Italy, South Korea, China are all facing demographic collapse. Fewer workers; Shrinking labour force, and shrinking tax base. Health care and pensions are skyrocketing. The modern word demands fast adaptability, yet the current schooling system wastes decades teaching basic skills. By the time people become proficient in their career there already in decline. The majority of healthcare related cost are spent on aging related diseases, instead of prolonging sickness curing aging would prevent these diseases entirely. Thus freeing up medical resources for other areas making healthcare cheaper and more effective.
Longer life spans would allow people to correct mistakes, explore new paths, and contribute meaningfully over the centuries. The stress of running of time would disappear, leading to increased productivity.
The economy is built on people, if people are breaking down and dying to soon the economy will also. Considering current health epidemics like the obesity crisis, making an already fragile system even more fragile. Instead of subsequent generations having to learn the same skills over and over again, people can further develop and reinvent themselves.
In summary a cure for aging would mean:
A larger, more experienced workforce
Less economic waste in treating age related diseases
More time for people to contribute to society
Less economic instability due to shifts in demographics.
When you realize that curing aging is just a luxury but an economic necessity, all other counter arguments become null and void. Overpopulation, which a cure for aging would stabilize, as people live longer they will put off having children because there won’t be any rush. Governments may have to limit reproductive rights, they will have to do regardless if aging was cured or not. But I don’t see any draconian measures being enforced. We will push beyond the current global constraint of 70-80 years, and create a more stable global economic system in the near future.
