So many people think this is Birmingham Alabama. This is Birmingham UK! That's the train station behind them.

u/raider1v11 20d ago

He's advancing like a Renaissance fencing instructor.

u/[deleted] 20d ago

En guard!

"COME NOW, APPRENTICE! ADVANCE UPON ME AND I'LL SHOW YOU WHY I AM THE TEACHER, AND YOU, THE PUPIL!"

u/GrumpyGG64 20d ago

He didn’t look fully committed to the cause, most bystanders and bysitters didn’t seem too interested.

u/sheopx 20d ago

Lived in Brum for 7+ years. I wouldn't really flinch at this either and I'm a big ol' pansy tbh. It's just that there is a high concentration of complete lunatics in Birmingham city centre, and if I ran from every barmpot that felt like a threat, I'd spend all day running.

If I saw this in the rural town I live now in Finland? I'd run all the way to Norway.

75

u/Breakfastcrisis 20d ago

It didn’t seem like most people weren’t taking him too seriously. Maybe the nutter is known to most locals? Not sure, but fair play for not playing up to him. They may not have apprehended him, but I can understand that. It’s hard to know how these things will work out. Thank god the idiot was captured by police long before he had the chance to hurt anyone.

147

u/psychopastry 20d ago

You get used to it and learn to tune it out tbh, I lived in an area in West London with a very high concentration of radical islamist types back when the whole ISIS thing was really kicking off and after the first couple of times seeing some nutter wandering about waving a machette and shouting about the Quran says this and that etc. the shock kinda wears off and if you just keep your distance then you're probably safe

151

u/Ok_Poet_8923 20d ago

That is horrifying to read.

48

u/psychopastry 20d ago

I guess but at the end of the day, particularly in big cities like Brum or London with "rough" areas, there's no shortage of violent nutters for whatever reason - religious zeal, junkies, mental health problems, gangsters etc. and the safest thing to do is avoid interracting with them as much as possible and just quietly increase the gap between you and them (and obvs call the police too if necessary)

50

u/SpareWire 20d ago

Londonistan by Melanie Phillips is a pretty solid read if you're looking for a good book on the subject but it might be a little outdated these days (2006).

"Londonistan" is actually the term French intelligence used to refer to London as a hotbed for this type of activity, coined in the 90s I think.

3

u/Shyassasain 20d ago

Thats londinium, baby!

29

u/Teuchterinexile 20d ago

I have lived in Birmingham for 10 years and not seen anyone wandering around with any kind of bladed weapon.

You do get those guys shouting about the Quran outside the Bullring but there are plenty of annoyances from other religions in the same area as well.

3

u/GrumpyGG64 20d ago

You might be right.

156

u/Abusivedaddy12 20d ago

Its exactly because of those bystandards he didn't do anything But if there we're less people... maybe he'd commit

42

u/Phantom_kittyKat 20d ago

Why you gotta include us in this

19

u/Silent_Shaman 20d ago

They live in Birmingham, it's the quiet nutters carrying knives you've got to worry about

7

u/iBimpy 20d ago

Probably because in Birmingham it's rare to venture out the house and not see a stabbing.

I used to live in Birmingham and I can confirm I've seen way worse than this lol

Ah yes, the "Find Out" stage of the process.

Edit. Can I just say thank you folks. I put a silly comment on here and you've given me over a thousand upvotes. I'm over the moon!

Saw the title and thought "Birmingham Alabama or Birmingham in the UK". Saw the tasers and had my answer.

107

u/Raven_Blackfeather 20d ago

We only use firearms as a last resort or if the threat to life is immediate, normally we just zap your arse and carry you away in the meat wagon.

66

u/josephus_jones 20d ago

They do it the other way in Birmingham Alabama.

103

u/FallenButNotForgoten 20d ago

They'll zap your meat and carry you away in the arse wagon

29

u/Ectobatic 20d ago

Don’t threaten me with a good time

6

u/Raven_Blackfeather 20d ago

Yes, I know. Dunblane changed our views and our culture towards firearms.

23

u/_Enclose_ 20d ago

We only use firearms as a last resort or if the threat to life is immediate

As it should be.

14

u/Beginning_Stay_9263 20d ago

That's way more efficient, that way you can get them back on the streets in less than 24 hours.

15

u/genxer 20d ago

I'm in Alabama and thought the same thing. Guy is still breathing so I knew it wasn't "here".

42

u/jarvdslr 20d ago

Being tased for the first time is always a shocking experience.

148

u/scooba_dude 20d ago

Would he still be alive, if this were Birmingham, Alabama?

Until I got to this comment, I assumed it was Alabama and was wondering why everyone was so chill.

I think Pastafarians are pretty chill.

-15

u/bolivar-shagnasty 20d ago

Sikhs too.

9

u/redterrqr 20d ago

I don't think they can be described as a religion of peace, they literally have a knife on them at all times to fight for God.

3

u/_Enclose_ 20d ago

That why they always carry a knife?

14

u/Prize_Instance_1416 20d ago

All religions are violent cults based on fairytales

7

u/bolivar-shagnasty 20d ago

Even Buddhism?

18

u/aznthrewaway 20d ago

The Rohingya genocide that you might remember from a few years back was committed, in part, by Buddhist nationalists. Not the first time either as Buddhists have gone to war a lot in the past.

-2

u/SarahPallorMortis 20d ago

Pantheism is pretty neutral

6

u/Tself 20d ago

Pantheism isn't really a religion; it's a belief. Its supernatural claims aren't accompanied by any dogma/ethical code.

0

u/Shyassasain 20d ago

We aren't many, but we're chill.

-59

Nah thats just Birmingham

124

u/DeadoTheDegenerate 20d ago

Don't downvote this man. I am from Birmingham, and I was in town when this happened

Can confirm. This is just Birmingham.

9

u/jacyerickson 20d ago

Can also confirm. One of my relatives has traveled all over the world for their job and been mugged multiple times. Lived in some not great places for a decade. They only made it two years in Birmingham before moving back to the U.S. permanently.

22

u/yehiko 20d ago

I watched peaky blinders.

Can confirm. This is just Birmingham

2

u/DeadoTheDegenerate 20d ago

This man Brum's

2

u/Nochnichtvergeben 20d ago

Birmingham, England, right? Just asking because some Yanks seemed to think this was the other Birmingham. (Although him not getting shot would have surprised me.)

6

u/jawanessa 20d ago

As someone in the US Birmingham, can confirm, this is the UK Birmingham

-2

u/DeadoTheDegenerate 20d ago

They also tend to think that everything is American... I pay no mind to the stereotype enforcers like them lol

-112

u/Party_Attitude8754 20d ago

I like how standing up to racism in such a witty and funny manner gets you instantly downvoted haha

I was pretty sure there is some "Ethnic Cleansing" in Myanmar being done by Buddhist nationalists.

I had to Google to remember what country it was. It's not something I've seen a lot of reporting on.

16

u/Seldarin 20d ago

There are Buddhist terrorist sects in South and Southeast Asia, Buddhists in Japan supported Imperial Japan in WW2.

But yeah, here's a Time article about some of the South/SE ones.

You’re assuming he isn’t a UK citizen based on how he looks. It’s an old, tired racial prejudice. No need for racism.

-20

u/rebeljake7 20d ago

I'm deeply ashamed by the amount of downvotes on comments like yours in this thread. It's such a disgrace to see people's ignorance.

-20

u/emorgji 20d ago

Thank you for your reply - it upsets me to see them too. I don’t mind getting downvotes when I believe I am standing up for the right thing and it makes someone else feel less targeted.

Why does it take so long for people in the UK to do things. As soon as I see the knife im shooting. Especially when he swinging it around like that.

24

u/emorgji 20d ago

Because it is best to de-escalate situations rather than taking lives.

-15

u/boykinsir 20d ago

Did you know that guy could have stabbed the officer with the taser before he could pull the trigger. Don't use one as a threat, just use it.

-17

u/Forsaken-Ad-3463 20d ago

Did you also know it’s a taser. You reduce the risk of him stabbing someone infinitely if he is disarmed. Probability of death from taser is low

-7

u/ljacks09 20d ago

Wow and he didn’t get shot

20

u/monkeybadger13 20d ago

Because it's Birmingham England not Birmingham Alabama.

There is much less knife crime in the UK than the press would have you believe - per capita, less than the US, so this idea that Brits carry knives is just a false/lazy trope.
