A McDonald's I went to in the Chicago suburbs totally had no soul. There was a counter there but no menus behind it to encourage kiosk ordering

I haven't eaten at a mickey dees for at least a decade, but I would walk back out if faced with the absence of a damn menu.

I'm sure kiosk ordering is cheaper for the company, just like training us all to ring up and bag our own groceries has proven to be. But there's a point where I'll simply go somewhere else, and most companies are intent on finding that point, and doing everything possible to stay just barely shy of it.
