TikTok deal put on hold after China objects over tariffs, sources say

WASHINGTON/BEIJING, April 4 (Reuters) - A deal to spin off the U.S. assets of TikTok was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve the deal following President Donald Trump's tariffs announcement this week, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Trump on Friday extended by 75 days a deadline for ByteDance to sell U.S. assets of the popular short video app to a non-Chinese buyer, or face a ban that was supposed to have taken effect in January under a 2024 law.

They know the tariffs hurt the US more than themselves

If it’s a 1 on 1 trade war between the U.S and China, then China will suffer more in the short run, even though I would argue they have higher pain tolerance.

But this isn’t a 1 on 1 trade war, it’s U.S vs. rest of the world, so U.S will suffer far more than any individual country would.

With China leading the charge in punching back, if a few other major economic powers join the foray, it would be easy to see that U.S wont have enough leverage against the rest of the world combined.

The problem is that narcissists in these situations tend to double down, especially if there is no one to stop them and they have little to lose themselves.

China’s trade to the US is only 3% of gdp. They will be fine and they won’t back down. If US increases Tariffs, china will do so as well.

China is in a much better position. And I am not a big fan of china.

China has been on the verge of a collapse for decades. Listen to the guys advising trump, they know it’s almost their time. China legit could have stopped covid but didn’t. This time its payback and will dismantle their economy
