Events / Things to Do Today's trash cleanup was a major success 🙌 🌎 ❤️
Earlier today TrashLoveKzoo and the Kalamazoo Earth Day Committee partnered up (in honor of Earth Month) for TLKs monthly cleanup! The results are nothing short of astonishing. This area was the worst I've seen, and now it's unrecognizable from what it was before. The plants and wildlife in the area can now thrive without being choked out by TONS of trash.
This area is now detrashed.
With this said, I'm very excited to announce that we're moving on to a new site for the May cleanup. This location will be announced soon!
I'm eternally grateful to each and every one of you who have contributed to these efforts. Thank you.
To quote one of our volunteers today, "The Earth can breathe again"

Sports Show support for WMU Hockey
A reminder to put out your W flags and do whatever you can to show support for the WMU mens hockey team as they travel to St. Louis for a chance to win a National Championship!
In a world filled with reasons to divide our community... perhaps we can find some local unity in supporting our team battling to bring home a trophy to make Kalamzoo and the State of Michigan proud.
Thursday @ 5:00 - Semifinal v. Denver Saturday @ 8:00 - National Championship
Go Broncos!

Is there any scuttlebutt on the future of the State Theater?
Such a beautiful place and what a huge disappointment that it’s closed. Especially considering the shows that they brought in over the last several years.
Does anyone have any insider knowledge that you’re able to share?

4/5 Protests, Kalamazoo MI, 12:40pm, Mall Drice to Milham Drive. I feel hopeful again.
Please don't judge the radio in the background. I was listening to NPR on MI public radio. These slam poet stories were phenomenal.

Holy smokes. The crowd protesting on Westnedge is Enormous
I don’t believe I’ve seen anything anywhere close to this size in Kzoo or Portage.
Near Crossroads but also well north and south if you’re interested.

My wife and one of our dogs at the Hands Off protest on Westnedge
Even our dogs dislike this administration. The protest was very heartening. Power to the people and fight on.

Is WMU affected similarly to CMU?
CMU just found out (some of? most of?) their International Students visas were just blanket canceled. The college discovered it- there was no warning or announcement. So other universities might be seeing similar, but so far no one knows? Anyone at WMU (or K College?) know what the situation is here?

Impact of the Executive Order on Kzoo Libraries
"From the Director, Michael Cockrell Kalamazoo Public Library has received many inquiries regarding the recent Executive Order signed on March 14, 2025, which seeks to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and how it will affect KPL services to our patrons.
IMLS is a federal agency that funds libraries, museums, and related organizations in the United States. The Library of Michigan distributes this funding to libraries across Michigan to support vital resources and programming. KPL uses these funds to provide our cardholders’ access to the Michigan Electronic Library Catalog (MeLCat), which offers millions of books, CDs, DVDs, manuscripts, and other materials from 170+ libraries across Michigan.
In addition, KPL relies on IMLS funds to support our MeL Databases, which provide instant access to articles from tens of thousands of magazines and newspapers. Students and professionals in Kalamazoo utilize these databases daily for research and occupational enrichment.
For KPL, the loss of IMLS funding will require either an alternative funding source for MeLCat and MeL Databases or a reduction in services to our patrons. Other libraries in Michigan will face much larger struggles.
“A dismantling of the Institute of Museum and Library Services would have negative implications for every American and the library services on which they rely,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice in a statement released by the Michigan Department of Education on March 20, 2025. “This action would decrease access to books and other library materials and harm residents in Michigan and across the country, especially those in small and rural communities.”
We sincerely thank our patrons and the Kalamazoo community for their continued support, and we encourage them to stay informed on this issue."
