Request Best Laptop for Mechanical Engineering + Gaming?

Hi, I am going to college this fall and will be studying a Bachelor's of Mechanical Engineering.

I am looking for a laptop to buy that would suit my degree + games.

I'm thinking of something like: Intel i7+, 32GB of RAM, RTX4060, 1TB SSD, not too heavy, has a touchscreen for notes, not too loud (dual fans?), 120+ Hz
(I'm not sure if I NEED a touchscreen, but I heard having notes online is easier than having them in a real notebook)

Edit:
So far, I am thinking of these options:
- Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i
- HP Spectre x360 16
- Dell XPS 15 9530

Hey everyone! I’m looking for help choosing a Windows laptop for work :)

I'm currently using a MacBook Pro — I really like the build quality, but I just can't get used to macOS. I’m struggling to find the right laptop that fits my needs.

What I need it to handle:

  • ~10 Excel files open at once (each ~10k rows, 10–30 columns)
  • ~30 Chrome tabs
  • 2–3 external monitors connected (2K resolution)

Must-haves:

  • Keyboard: 75% or smaller — even a 40% layout would be amazing (VERY important)
  • Build material: Metal (Very important)
  • Display: 16” or larger
  • Panel: OLED or IPS
  • Weight: Doesn’t matter
  • CPU: i5-14600 or better
  • GPU: Not important — integrated graphics or a 3050 is enough
  • RAM: 16–32 GB
  • SSD: 512 GB to 1 TB
  • Budget: €1000–€2000

If you have any recommendations that match most (or all) of this, I’d really appreciate your input! Thanks in advance 🙏

Im making a server for my files and minecraft server but the thing is. I have two 500gb hdd drives + 1tb hdd + one 320gb hdd and i plan on using another ssd for the os (as i dont want to use a usb fash drive.) So thats a total of 5 drives. Im not sure how to connect all the drives up. The laptop has 3 usbs so for them i can use usb to sata connectors and for the 4th drive i can use the DVD slot for a hdd caddy. But not sure how to connect the last one. The laptop does have a nvme slot but its for a sata nvme and i cant find one. Any ideas how to connect every thing up?

I had ordered Snapdragon X Elite processor laptop, but I got Snapdragon X plus. I had opened the laptop and even activated MS license and later I realised that I have lower CPU product. Can I now return it with activated MS office license? Also is there a major difference between X Plus 64 and X Elite 78? I just need laptop for browsing, office apps, and reading.

Looking for a traditional style laptop, thin, lightweight, non-touch, No AI, backlit keyboard, 1080P FHD IR Hybrid camera as well as a 1080p screen, 15-16 inch screen size. 256 GB SSD and 8GB RAM. Windows 11 Home, no extra software. No gaming, but for entertainment and everyday use. I use the webcam a lot. Good quality audio speakers preferred. I suppose the CPU should be Intel Core Ultra 5 125U? Is that the best value? I found a build your own model like this on Lenovo (Canada site) for $1100CAD. It is a ThinkBook 16. Not sure if there is something better around the same price?

Discussion Screen Flickering on my laptop. Help please

Acer Nitro 5 i5-10 gen

Display adapter:

1) Intel(R) UHD Graphics

2) NVIDIA GEForce GTX 1650 TI

So, my screen flickers for 2 seconds and goes back to normal for 2 seconds. Rinse and repeat.

Tried lowering my refresh rate from 144 HZ to 60 Hz. at 144 Hz, it flickers every 1 second for 1 second. At 60 Hz it flickers every 2 seconds for 2 seconds

Already tried these possible fixes, and nothing worked out:

1) Restarting

2) Booting up on safe mode (Still flickering)

3) Tried using Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset my graphics driver, still flickering.

4) Tried updating to latest windows 11, still flickering.

5) Tried to roll back my intel(R) UHG graphics to the basic one and vice versa, still flickering.

6) Tried installing the latest game ready driver from nvidia, still flickering.

7) Tried uninstalling driver and restarting, still flickering.

Are there any other software fix that I can try?

If it's hardware issues, what's most likely the issue here?

1) Loose pin/ribbon/connection inside?

2) Graphics driver failing?

3) LCD screen problem?

Do note: I tried using dual monitor and the second monitor doesn't flicker at all. Does this mean it's not a display/graphics driver issue?

By any chance it's a graphics driver failing, if it ended up being dead, can I still use a dual monitor setup even if my laptop screen is dead?

I don't want to buy a new laptop for work, and I hear some risks about doing LCD replacement, so I wonder if I can get away with a dual monitor setup. But ofc, I want it to get fixed. What are the chances a future software/windows update will fix it?

If anything, this issue started 2 WEEKS after I upgraded my windows from windows 10 to 11. I doubt it it's the windows 11 update, coz if it was, the issue should start right away, right?

I hope someone can help me. Thanks!

Request Unsure about what CPU, GPU, and Battery I should be looking for in a laptop to support my needs/wants.

I'm finally replacing my 14 year old 17.3 inch Acer Aspire 7745G (with one of the two 500GB HDD replaced with a Samsung 250GB SSD from like 11 years ago).

I need a versatile laptop that is future proof for anything and everything I'd want to do for either personal or career uses.

I have experience (and files made) using architectural software, Adobe creative suite programs (almost all of them), etc. I play video games. I used to use a drawing tablet (but I'm not sure if it's going to be compatible since its like 10+ years old) and might want to get back into digital drawing again. I also have ADHD so I'll have lots open at the same time. I'd probably use a mix of physical storage and cloud storage. I also use an android/Google ecosystem if that's relevant at all.

Definitely confused and unsure about CPU and GPU and inegrated vs dedicated while considering cost and longevity/future proofing. Which also in turn affects battery which makes it hard to figure out. Also AI or not which affects all of those too.

Please note that I've done some research but it doesn't mean I fully know/understand what I'm talking about even if I'm using the correct terminology. Please be kind.

P.S. If you have some laptop recommendations please share them!

I do not want to waste my mummy daddy's hard earned money🙁! Help me.

Hey tech nerds, I need your expertise!

I’m a computer science student studying cybersecurity, and I’m on the hunt for a new laptop to power my training and personal projects. My parents are funding this, so I want to make a smart choice with their hard-earned money. So, i am very cautious. The budget is INR 80k.

Here’s what I’ll be doing: Virtualization: Running multiple VMs (macOS, Windows, Arch Linux) for labs and testing. Programming/Scripting: Mostly lightweight stuff, nothing too crazy. Gaming: A bit of fun with titles like Watch Dogs (not super demanding, but smooth performance matters).

My Ideal Specs (Correct Me If I miss something or wrongly assumed):

CPU: i5 H/HX or equivalent AMD (or better if it’s worth it). Memory: Minimum 16GB DDR5 Storage: 512GB SSD (expandable would be a bonus). GPU: RTX 30/40 series, 60-150W TGP for gaming and VM acceleration. Display: 100% sRGB would be nice but not a dealbreaker.

Are these specs solid for my needs, or should I tweak something? I’m new to this level of hardware shopping, so I’d love your input!

My Shortlistings (Help Me Choose!): I’m torn between these options and really messed my brain. If you’ve used any of these or know about them, please share your thoughts—pros, cons, battery life, build quality, thermals, anything!

Asus TUF Series (A15/A17) Lenovo LOQ Series: Heard mixed reviews on lenovo's website about power issues. Acer ALG Gaming Series Dell G15 Acer Nitro V MacBook M2 (256GB): Tempted, but can it handle VMs + gaming well? It’s the max I can afford in Apple’s lineup.

Any hidden machines I’m missing that fit my needs and budget? If you were me, which would you pick and why?

I’d love detailed reviews, personal experiences, or even warnings about pitfalls to avoid.

Thanks so much for helping me out—I really appreciate it! 😊

Discussion Should I follow my heart and buy a PC or be a responsible student and get a laptop?

(TL;DR at the end) Hello everyone, I’ve got an 11-year-old i3 laptop , and I’m finally upgrading to a pc/laptop for gaming studying SAT, and using it in for uni after 2 years (will I need a laptop to use inside classes? or will a phone/iPad be enough?). Budget is around $1,300, but prices in my country are stupid. I already own a setup but without a monitor. I game on my Ps5 now, i only play AAA and some indie games, but games are very expensive, so I want to switch (and keep my ps5 for couch co-op and exclusives). Also, in two years I’m moving abroad for uni (hopefully machine learning or smth similar) and will fly home every summer.

i can build a PC for $1,360. That gets me a Ryzen 5 7600, RX 6800 XT (finding a good gpu for a reasonable price is a nightmare) , 32GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, and a 1440p 180Hz monitor (since I don’t have one) (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6pTPh7). it's exactly what I need for games and machine learning, it will also look way better than a laptop (I am an aesthetics sucker), but the idea of lugging a desktop and a screen through airports every summer is not nice. Do I bubble-wrap it and pray it survives? Also I am not sure if i will need a laptop to use in the uni.

or I can get a laptop with an RTX 4070 (if I hunt hard enough, so a 4060 is more realistic in my country). Its great in traveling and using it in the Uni (will get it with an i-gpu for battery). but even a 4070 laptop is slower than the PC, and might sound like a leaf blower during ML workloads. Also gaming on a 15-inch screen after my PS5’s 4K TV feels underwhelming (or is it?).

I am stuck in a loop. The PC is a great for gaming and ML, but moving it yearly sounds like a disaster. The laptop’s portable, but paying more for less power feels like a scam. And my PS5? It works now, but $70 games even with discounts are bleeding me dry. Thanks for reading.

TL;DR:
should i get a gaming PC (powerful for AAA/ML but cant use it in inside the uni,and a nightmare to move abroad yearly) or a portable RTX 4070/4060 laptop (weaker, noisy, but travel-friendly). i own a PS5 but games are very expensive, PC gaming is way cheaper.

Request Best value work laptops?

Hi everyone, I'm a non-techy guy in need of help finding a good work laptop. The issue is my company offers laptops that travel well (i.e., are thin and lightweight), but lack the power I need to crunch numbers and keep a 5-10 files open at a time. I can bring my own device so I'm looking for a replacement.

What's important is that it's laptop and it has a lot of computing power for business applications. I don't care if it's 3 inches thick, weighs 20 lbs., and causes third degree burns. I'm not sure what this should cost but I don't want to pay for video game features. Screen quality? Not important. Light up keyboard? Not important. Fancy graphics cards? Not important.

Any suggestions?

New laptops with AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 besides MSI?

Hi gang,

Is anyone aware of any upcoming (or current) laptops that feature both the AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, besides the upcoming MSI Raider A18 HX? Preferably from a company that supports Linux?

It's not that I have anything against MSI (aside from them not supporting Linux). I just want to be aware of my options.

Thanks!

Recommendation on New HP or other Laptops under $900

My husband and I are looking for a new laptop. I use an Elitebook for work and I like it. My husband has an older 2017 HP touchscreen laptop that we both like. I work various marketing contracting jobs and will utilize the laptop for that, as well as for our eBay store, but nothing too extreme, such as gaming or similar activities. Prefer laptop needs to be 17" or at minimum have a 10key on the side.

Does anyone have a recommendation on a new HP or other brand laptop that is around $600-900 that would be long lasting? We prefer HP or Dell but open to others. Just want something that is good for the value as a 2nd laptop.

Request Acer Swift Edge vs HP Pavilion?

Looking at the Acer Swift Edge R7-7840U, which is on sale right now, vs the HP Pavillion, which will soon be on sale for the same price. I'm leaning towards the Acer for the screen and cpu, but the pavillion does have a better battery life. I'm mainly looking for something to use for coding and homework assignments, nothing too crazy. Anyone have any opinions one way or the other?

Request Lenovo laptops?

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm not sure which one to get. I have had good experiences with Lenovo and I'm pretty brand loyal. I got an HP once and it was the worst laptop I've ever had. The moment it left the box it was slow. The damn thing had nothing on it and it would freeze just trying to open Word.

So, I want to stick with Lenovo, but my last two Lenovo laptops (IdeaPads) broke on the hinge and the screens fell off. I don't understand how they both could break in the same place unless it's user error, but I was never rough with them or handled them in that spot. Has anyone experienced this?

What is the difference between the IdeaPad and ThinkPad? And the yoga one? I currently have an IdeaPad 5, and honestly, I love it. But the hinge is broken again, and at any moment it's just going to fall off, especially if I use the touch screen.

Any recommendations? I don't do anything extreme. My needs are- writing, storing pictures, Reddit, Netflix, and occasionally Minecraft.

Thanks!

Request Weirdness in Laptop screen

I have an old Toshiba Laptop...I just use it for browsing and light office stuff..

Something has shown up ...in the screen....this weird mark. I'd say it's on the INSIDE of the clear "glass"...you can see the cursor and pixels and everything underneath it.....and it's line part keeps getting bigger.

Anyone have any ideas about it and maybe solutions? (I plan on taking things apart with an ifixit guide at some point and see if I can see something more).

Boots into OS then shuts off

I have a Legion 5 Pro 16irx8. I Flashed the vbios to the newer updated one, something happened and now about 15 seconds after fans come on the computer just shuts off. I’m in hybrid mode and I can’t get to the legion toolkit fast enough to put it in hybrid igpu mode and I’ve tried everything. Any tips?
