I was at smart and final some months ago and the barcode on my steaks wouldn't scan. I told the cashier to just enter it manually and he said, "Not for what they pay me." And put it in my bag for free.
Back when Target actually let customer service employees hand out gift cards without manager approval, I'd hand those things out like candy to any decently kind customer that had an issue. I'd get a lot of "is that ok?" And my response was always "yeah, doesn't come out of my paycheck"
