The Avatar conversation gave a good chuckle.

Rarely ever get a reference to both Avatars in one go, much less the anime one from the rival kids/cartoon channel.

Also they showed Yo Gabba Gabba in Wandavision rather than any of the numerous Disney properties for babies. Fits in with them referencing stuff all across television history, and makes more sense with the show's colour theory.

26

u/FrameworkisDigimon Mar 30 '22

Well, they have to remind people blue people exists with the sequel coming out.

7

u/esar24 Rocket Mar 31 '22

Not to mention both are under one parent now, so cross marketing is bound to happen.

u/PogromStallone Mar 30 '22

In case you didn't know, Avatar isn't an anime.

22

u/Axelrad77 Mar 30 '22

It is.

I'll just leave this video here, as it sums up my views on how anime is an art movement, not a geographic boundary.

-7

u/dorothyschultz Mar 31 '22

Avatar the last Airbender is not an anime.

-16

u/PogromStallone Mar 30 '22

Avatar is no more anime than Family Guy is.

There are a lot of anime that doesn't look at all like the 'art movement'.

11

u/abutthole Thor Mar 31 '22

Family Guy doesn't use the artistic style and storytelling tropes of anime, Avatar does.

u/PogromStallone Mar 31 '22

the artistic style and storytelling tropes of anime

Dude, there is no artistic style or storytelling tropes of anime. You might want to look into something other than the latest shonen.

5

u/GrandEdgemaster Mar 31 '22

Family Guy is anime.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is anime.

King of the Hill is my favorite anime.

u/rnarkus Mar 31 '22

So what’s the distinction with a cartoon? Would It be like all cartoons are anime, but not all anime are cartoons?

Im generally just curious! I’ve always considered atla an anime, but haven’t thought about king of the hill in that way.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '22

but in Japan they would classify Family Guy as anime, therefore… Avatar is anime.

18

u/cloudmandream Mar 30 '22

It is. Just because it wasn't made by Japanese people doesn't take away from the fact that its genre is that of anime. Anime is merely a style of animation.

Since when have genres been segregated by the ethnicity of the people who've worked on the media?

Maybe we should call something an anime only if the creator is Japanese? But then what if an American writes a story, but hires exclusively Japanese people to do the rest?

You'd be dumb to not call that an Anime.

But then what if he hires 80% japanese and 20% not. What then?

Where do we draw the line. What is the correct japanese ratio for something to be considered anime?

-3

u/PogromStallone Mar 30 '22

It is. Just because it wasn't made by Japanese people doesn't take away from the fact that its genre is that of anime. Anime is merely a style of animation.

Not at all, there are a lot of anime that doesn't look like the style of animation you're talking about.

-8

u/ogscrubb Mar 30 '22

Anime isn't a genre or style. It has many genres and styles just like western animation does. Genres haven't been segregated and aren't. But to answer your question it depends. Could ask you the same thing. What is the correct amount of Japanesiness to not consider something a cartoon?

-6

u/dorothyschultz Mar 31 '22

TIL spider man into the spider verse is anime

6

u/HotPocketsEater Mar 30 '22

I'm pretty sure they referred to atla as an anime for the joke, it's like saying shrek is your favorite anime

1

u/RandomMovieQuoteBot_ Mar 31 '22

From the movie Shrek: [Laughing] [Clears Throat] Run, run, run, as fast as you can. You can't catch me. I'm the gingerbread man!

3

u/BryanTheFool Mar 30 '22

Just because a handful of /r/anime's mods decided that doesn't make it true.

7

u/PogromStallone Mar 30 '22

It's because it's not Japanese.

3

u/throwaway85256e Mar 31 '22

So, you're telling me that To Be Hero and Bloodivores aren't anime?

They are both listed on myanimelist.net but are not even slightly Japanese. They are Chinese.

This guy does a great job explaining why you're wrong.

Blue people? Anime?

Perfection!

And to top it all off: Are you going to kill me?

-41

u/supersad19 Grandmaster Mar 30 '22

Is there an anime called Avatar or is it ATLA? Cause ATLA isn't an anime.

50

u/Snowchugger Mar 30 '22

Oh here we fucking go. I just knew there'd be one. As SOON as I heard that line I just knew there'd be one of you people.

-31

u/supersad19 Grandmaster Mar 30 '22

Chill dude. I just asked because ATLA doesn't have the unique anime style and it was made by Nickelodeon.

27

u/Droggelbecher Mar 30 '22

It doesn't matter. People call it anime and people know what is meant if you say avatar the anime.

We've been having this nonsensical discussion since avatar first came out. It's really, really tiresome.

-9

u/supersad19 Grandmaster Mar 30 '22

I had no idea there was this discussion. I only watched ATLA last year.

12

u/Snowchugger Mar 30 '22

In that case I'll apologise. You just gotta know that discussion is an old wound at this point.

7

u/supersad19 Grandmaster Mar 30 '22

No worries. I honestly had no idea about this discussion

3

u/AmeriCanadian98 Spider-Man Mar 31 '22

Yeah there's questions whether shows like it and She-Ra on Netflix are considered Anime since they were made by American studios and it's a whole thing

5

u/Axelrad77 Mar 30 '22

Here's a good video on the discussion from several years ago, from the perspective I favor (anime is an art movement).

This kind of thing starts a lot of arguments online because anime communities tend to be both gatekeepy and inconsistent about what they allow discussion on.

8

u/alex494 Mar 30 '22 edited Mar 30 '22

It might as well be and nobody really gains anything from nitpicking about it

48

u/BruteSentiment Mar 30 '22

To be honest, the blue aliens were the first thing I thought as well, and then the anime.

4

u/FrameworkisDigimon Mar 30 '22

tbf, until Legend of Korra Book 2 came out, ATLA didn't really fit with the general meaning of avatar... "avatar of what?" In this context, the blue one should probably be your go to.

1

u/MindLinking Mar 30 '22

My first thought was the Ultima series of games, then simply online avatars.

46

u/2580374 Spider-Man Mar 30 '22

When he called avatar an anime I was just hmm some people will not like that lol

28

u/SorestKiller777 Mar 30 '22

It’s one of the only US based cartoons I give the anime pass to. It’s heavily inspired by anime and Asian culture

5

u/MarvelousNCK Spider-Man Mar 31 '22

Avatar and Teen Titans, both pretty influenced by anime

4

u/Representative_Big26 Mar 30 '22

Avatar and Lego Ninjago are the only two American anime in my book

5

u/rajapb Mar 30 '22

Also Boondocks

2

u/rnarkus Mar 31 '22

definitely boondocks

-7

u/HotPocketsEater Mar 30 '22

I'm convinced that was part of the joke, like saying shrek or despicable me is your favorite anime

1

u/RandomMovieQuoteBot_ Mar 31 '22

From the movie Shrek: Shrek! [Screams] [Screaming]
