I remember when people were out for Palworld's devs' blood when it came out. I remember people rejoicing when nintendo finally filed for a lawsuit. I don't get these people tbh
The majority of AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA games are founded almost entirely on their technological innovation, so why in the world wouldn't patents, which protect technological innovations, apply to games
Because the patents in question are super generic in nature.
I believe one of them had to do with throwing stuff (like pokeballs for example) which is incredibly generic and most likely used in other monster catching games in addition to Palworld.
It’s also notable that some of these patents were not even applied for until AFTER Palworld existed.
Ok, so Tetris now gets dibs on the patent for MIDI songs and shapes, fuck Mega Man and fuck Super Mario.
Hey I just patented a new game mechanic, is called Quick Time Events! And no,
you can’t use them in your games because it is my innovation.
Hello, I just patented game progression in terms of XP or Experience Points, is mine to use alone.
Games are built on the innovations of prior installments.
If you don’t think patent trolling is bad for innovation check how they have to dismantle AT$T decades ago. Pretty sure cellphones and modems would’ve been invented.
Phantasy Star Online 2 used to be decently big until a few years ago when they decided to rebrand/relaunch the game in the form of "paving over everything with an incomplete beta concept version of a brand new game, but keeping the old version on life support as 20 gigabyte DLC so nobody can run a private server".
Incredibly unique case of a live service game being erased from the face of the world. That's the sort of concentrated evil being kept at bay by that department, deep in the pits of Sega.
10+ years ago there was definitely some SEGA copyright strike drama, but they do at least seem like reformed assholes nowadays. Honestly for quite a while it seemed like they would end up going the way of Atari. I’m happy they turned it around
Oh boy you have no idea. I talked shit about Zelda once in front of a fanboi and he FOLLOWED ME HOME to "teach me why I was wrong" since he "didn't have my number". They are on the same level as religious fanatics.
I don't really care too much about Palworld, but as an artist I don't like that they took designs from Pokémon and changed a few things, then called it a Pal. I'm no fangirl for Pokémon, but I'm not a fan of plagiarism either.
Though the hate isn't justified. I dislike the game, but I wouldn't say I hate it to the extent I want the developers sued. Those people need to grow up.
I agree. Although I'm okay with the lawsuit after I saw Moon Channel's video about it. Supposedly Palworld is exempt from its plagiarism because it technically counts as a parody which is protected in both the US and Japan. And Nintendo wasn't interested in suing Palworld, until Sony partnered with them to create an new Pokemon style company.
Plus the more I learn about Palworld's creators, the less I trust them.
For one, the studio has four games in early access, and none of them are close to being finished. With Sony buying Palworld I would imagine that they would want the game to be finished at least, instead of abandoning it.
The studio head has also talked about how coming up with new ideas is difficult and that he would rather just copy what's popular. Which I at least give him credit for his honesty.
I was never against Palworld, but it did kind of annoy me how Palworld defenders, would ignore the strikingly similarities the game has in designs and mechanics.
Like yeah it wasnt copy and paste, but it obviously isnt some completely uniquely thought game, and the pal designs take HEAVY inspiration from Pokemon. You really cant say they didnt.
Because talking in a subreddit about valid criticisms is hate lmao
And then ofc you go and use a dumb buzzword because you got offended by someone calling out your lukewarm paragraph, and doubled down to show us you're not here tot alo and you -are- that person.
Cheers
Edit: imagine white-knighting a person you have never met before on the internet so hard that you lose all sight and intelligence, especially when you leave out the exact context of why I wrote this lmao
Are you actually going to bring something to the conversation or just try to be a dumb child who only gets his rocks off by trying to be an obvious ass on the internet?
Got it, obvious ass troll who "thinks' me calling out someone who claimed criticism as hate and then completely takes everything else out of context or just ignores it for his dumbass trolling, is now having a moral superiority trip on reddit. Cheers for proving me right! 👍
it was an insult to the creature collector genre with the most banal derivative designs possible getting propped up as the greatest thing ever while many other games *actually* in the genre with actually good monster designs just get ignored
everyone clamoring over it because "competition for Pokemon" clearly never cared about the genre in the first place
I don't, either. Imho being a fan means you're not afraid to call a company out when they have messed up. Showing that you don't stand for something one of your favorite companies or whatever is doing something shitty shows way more respect than allowing them to take advantage all the time. I'm a fan of Nintendo. But I also know they really are delusional.
While not out for blood, I certainly was upset at palworld for using AI. Tho hate cuz it's a pokemon parody is a pretty stupid thing, seeing how many of them open their wallets for rom hacks
If you actually think that, then you haven't played the latest Pokemon SV... 😂 Consistent less than 30 FPS, glitches and constant lag, common pop-ins for 30% of every character model, that one classroom scene that ran on everyone's switch quite literally at 6 FPS...
Palworld may have not innovated much, but they made a god damn super fun game. Recently, I had a friend who was against Palworld for everything it stood for. He finally played it and understood why it was so heavily praised and completely switched sides.
Don't defend the company that's literally the highest grossing franchise in the world. If you're a Pokemon fan, Give them competition so that Pokemon itself can improve.
The Pokemon games are literal bottom of the barrel slop. Sword plays like a shitty 2005 tech demo you'd get on a CD. Just piss poor cookie cutter bullshit running at 540p 15fps.
All of this applies to Palworld just as much, if not even more. There is zero defence for Palworld's existence
Also, Sword plays literally fine. What are you on about??? The only one with proper performance issues is S/V.
Yeah, SWSH looks awful, but at least the visual style is consistent, and the FPS is smooth. The same cannot be said about Palworld lmfao.
I'm so tired of PW defenders. This game is so problematic and if you genuinely cannot see the issues with it and support it, then I don't know what to say to you.

Is there actually "people" unironically defending em at this point?
Legit asking
