They did say that it's not going to be creative but rather what everyone has been asking for that no one would give them.

It absolutely was for a week. There is no content beyond breeding pals and the second you Google anything the game is boring. No story, no interesting fights, everything is level based and the second you are within 5 levels of something you can kill it.

There definitely is a story, its hidden behind data pads and is still being written as the game develops

Nobody reads the pads.

Doom Eternal had its story behind Codexs, that was never a problem

I think it is kind bad/lazy, but giving it a second thought if its just secondary info thats there for people who want to know the lore and it wont make the main game confusing it may be fine

Depends on how its done, and how you find those text thingies.

Imagine a game where you explore some military lab that had some sick experiments get loose and you're piecing together what happened from chat logs and such. Or a murder mystery where you're sifting through letters between a serial killer and the victim you're trying to get justice for.

Hell, some of the charm in Fallout is reading those little flavor text logs to flesh out the "why" behind what you find in the dilapidated areas you're exploring.
