Back then the market wasn't so large that's why they were more expensive, more consumers menat lower prices. Now they just want to push the boundaries and make more money, idk how people can defend large companies like Nintendo at all.

Because companies are held to no moral standard. "Companies exist to make money by any means possible" is the legitimate view of a massive chunk of the population (which also tends to go along with wealthy = good). So when a company they like does something that is obviously just profit seeking without any actual benefit to the consumer or workers, they will still defend it because that is what companies should do.
