The world would be a better place if we had more public art installations like this everywhere. Maybe only marginally based on how it's going, but still.

Companies need to build their offices to look like what they are selling. Nike? A giant shoe. McDonalds? A massive Big Mac. Etc.

Just like in RollerCoaster Tycoon

u/Batmansbutthole 14h ago

So much puke to pick up in that game

11

u/JonatasA 14h ago

Great, I'm nostalgic now. For a game that I played on Windows XP no less, when it was old already.

If you have the game files (easy to obtain or buy) to RCT2, you can use the open rollercoaster tycoon 2 project to play it on modern machines.

They purposefully homogenize buildings so they can hot swap a different business in if the current one fails or moves for whatever reason. Less artistic, more efficient.

When McDonald’s goes under lmk.

6

u/Papayaslice636 14h ago

Many if not most McDonald's locations are franchises owned by individuals or other entities and not McDonald's corporate. It depends on their agreement but oftentimes they'll have a 20 or 30 year deal. Also the franchise may or may not own the physical structure itself. If the franchisee decides not to renew at the end of their contract, or if the lease ends and they decide to move to a different building, that McDonald's might become a Burger King or something else entirely. The new tenant might need to do a ton of remodeling to remove the McDonald's branding you described, which would cost a lot and impact the pricing on the deal. Therefore, buildings tend to be homogenized to minimize downtime if/when tenants move in and out.

Source: I know this shit trust me

I referred to their offices, not a franchise location. If I were a higher up in some cooperate office job I would wanna be workin in a burger.

1

u/JonatasA 14h ago

But how would a fast food perform better than the previous one?

3

u/Papayaslice636 14h ago

Most fast food chains are franchises owned by individuals or entities separate from the parent corp itself. Franchise agreements are finite and the franchisee might decide not to renew, and a different business might go in instead. They also might be leasing the building itself and may or may not renew at the end of the lease, Maybe they decide they want to move down the street.

My point is it's less about businesses failing or performing better than the other, and more about the logistics of potentially running multiple businesses out of the same building over many decades.

u/boomchacle 13h ago

That building is especially impressive considering how much force those "handles" must be under.

3

u/n6mub 14h ago

More art, more whimsy!

2

u/GapingFartLocker 15h ago

I should open up a donut shop 🤔

1

u/JonatasA 14h ago

But I don't want a bjgmack, I want a Cheeseburger!

1

u/Tarzoon 13h ago

Just like the coffins in Ghana honor the aspirations and achievements of the deceased through representations of the objects, ideals, or fantasies most important to them in life.

1

u/Phormitago 7h ago

You mean a miniscule big Mac

Damn thing hasn't been big in decades

1

u/Eringp 2h ago

my companies logo is a triangle and our HQ building is also a triangle. 💀 they were cooking

11

u/media-and-stuff 15h ago

The “best” (it was the name of the store) stores had the most fun designs.

https://www.archdaily.com/778003/the-intersection-of-art-and-architecture-the-best-products-showrooms-by-site-sculpture-in-the-environment

Now our department stores look like Walmart. :(

u/_kagasutchi_ 15h ago

I can guarantee you that, that man was through the roof the day it arrived and was installed. Probably smiles at it every day when they enter

2

u/KnifeInTheKidneys 14h ago

As cool as this is, I can almost guarantee you that this is just a marketing tactic from the toothpaste company lol

1

u/oroborus68 13h ago

You'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent.

1

u/veracity8_ 13h ago

Yes and no. Public art is great. But public art often makes for really shitty bike racks

1

u/NoNameStudios 7h ago

Except that this bike rack is basically unusable

358

u/Away-Elephant-4323 22h ago

That’s honestly so creative haha!

92

u/ooO00X00Ooo 21h ago

It is also a small ramp, if you're brave enough

30

u/justabill71 21h ago

"You got like three feet of air that time."

1

u/FitForce2656 7h ago

Or a grinding rale if you're really brave enough

76

u/Special_Brief4465 17h ago

I love stuff like this so much.

The creativity, the whimsy, the passion, the adventure, the risk of being cringe….I wish more places did unique things like this instead of being boring. Go all out.

9

u/OutragedPineapple 17h ago

Seriously - I love that some places will paint murals and stuff on utility boxes and other equipment to make them look nicer, but there's *so much more* you could do with stuff like that! There are so many ways that everything could be made not only functional, but fun and beautiful as well, that probably wouldn't cost much more to implement.

32

u/Magister5 22h ago

When you want to fluoride your bike…

5

u/jaygrum 22h ago

If you start going too fast, brace yourself for a fall.

17

u/AngieMBarber 20h ago

Now that’s how you do subtle marketing — creative, on-brand, and actually useful. 10/10 would park my bike and book a cleaning.

58

u/HugoZHackenbush2 22h ago edited 12h ago

My favourite time to visit the Dentist is in the afternoon..2.30 to be precise..

27

u/jaygrum 22h ago

Same! It’s like it was mint to be.

9

u/preruntumbler 20h ago

I feel like dentists should have a ritual at their 2:30 appointments. Like a golden toothbrush or something

2

u/crazyspottedcatlady 8h ago

This is actually the official emergency appointment time at my dentist's.

Motherfucker has a sense of humour!

3

u/Western-Back-8358 16h ago

Dead Internet Theory

20

u/Motivated_prune 22h ago

That’s very creative. 👏

7

u/moarhole 16h ago

You know, my first thought was "wow, probably could have allowed room for twice as many bikes if you'd just gone with a regular bike rack" and then I was really disappointed in myself for not just enjoying something. I enjoy this quite a lot, actually.

5

u/Its_Free-Real-Estate 16h ago

Hey neighbor! I pass this every day on my way to work, crazy.

3

u/owmyshoe 18h ago

Hey that's my dentist too!! He's the fucking best.

4

u/Disastrous_Bite_5478 16h ago edited 15h ago

Neat. Hospital near by has a rack that looks like an EKG

5

u/Justpeachy517 16h ago

That’s adorable

3

u/DoubleFamous5751 16h ago

Oh I love this

3

u/gazebo-fan 16h ago

That’s just plain fun

3

u/thegreatbrah 16h ago

I love dumb little stuff like this. Rarely see it anymore.

A restaurant near me has a wooden wolf statue. Its mostly kind of flat, but in the winter they have somebody build it out to a fleshed out wolf. I love it.

3

u/mfiasco 15h ago

There’s one here in Portland I always think is really clever when I drive by it. It’s 3 big (cement?) teeth with braces. A single thick cable runs across the teeth and you lock your bike to it.

3

u/hkohne 15h ago

I live in Portland, too! It's "Braces By Joe" on NE 33rd, and they use custom-made fabric "rubber bands" that wrap around the 4 metal braces, all with the horizontal wire. The "rubber bands" change colors depending on a holiday, and they were blue & yellow during the early months of the Ukraine war. The whole thing is awesome, and I've never seen a bike there.

1

u/mfiasco 14h ago

That’s the one! I never noticed the color changes. I have seen a bike there before, I think that’s how I figured out what it was.

3

u/Big_Maintenance9387 17h ago

Lmfao please post this in r/bicyclingcirclejerk. They’ll love it.

5

u/Conecuh_Pocket69 16h ago

You can tell the dentist is not in the office because there is no Pinarello on the rack.

2

u/Big_Maintenance9387 16h ago

You think the dentist would keep his bike outside!? No way, that baby is the centerpiece of his office.

5

u/Standing__Menacingly 15h ago

Idk man, as someone who rides a bike all I can think about is how terrible this style of bike rack is. The single wavy tube design is just such trash, there are so many way better designs out there.

I can appreciate the form in this, but the function still sucks.

1

u/Big_Maintenance9387 3h ago

No, you are totally right which is why this is perfect for the circlejerk(along with all the jokes about dentists and their bikes over there  haha). This design is a pain to get a u-lock around especially if you have a chonky bike!

2

u/lizardpearl 21h ago

This is amazing

2

u/WaterDragoonofFK 19h ago

Brilliant! 😂

2

u/Mother-Nature1972 18h ago

That's neat!

2

u/khumprp 17h ago

I drive by it every day and laugh 😂

2

u/namnavrevlis 17h ago

I had a laugh about this because I know exactly where this is. Yes, one hundred percent super creative, although I guess being local I assumed Colgate makes these things for dentist offices all over the US

2

u/Terrakinetic 15h ago

What's wrong with my eyes? My first thought was a "Dodo" from "Tiny Toons."

My eyes said the end of the toothpaste on the floor was the beak, and the actual paste was just Dodo contorting his body.

2

u/TurkeySammichSlinger 15h ago

Would love to see more stuff like this tbh

2

u/Independent-Cow-4070 15h ago

I like the design, but that looks like a very poor bike rack lol. That can lock up 2, maybe 3 bikes 😭. Hopefully there are more standard racks not too far away

2

u/puravidaamigo 12h ago

I seriously doubt that that bike rack is made from toothpaste. SMH, I was born at night but not last night.

2

u/SpicySugarRush_ 9h ago

hehe that's cool, great idea

2

u/RedSonGamble 21h ago

It’s weird bc I do see a surprising amount of people biking to my dentist. Either way I’m glad this is a proper bike rack and not one of those wheel only holders

I love seeing a proper rack

3

u/TheFloridaKraken 17h ago

I'm getting mad just thinking about having to pedal my ass home after getting a filling.

3

u/anxietyriddledeeyore 16h ago

We recently moved and had to get a new dentist. I’ve been twice, so far, and will be going like 4 or 5 times in the next year. I ride a bike there, and will continue to, but they have no bike rack, and it kinda sucks! There is a decent rack next door, at a bank, so it’s definitely not the end of the world, or anything, but it would be so cool if my dentist had an awesome rack like this (or any decent rack, really)! Maybe I will bring it up on my next ”visit”…

1

u/owmyshoe 18h ago

Unfortunately, this location is super hostile to bicycles, so it really is just an art piece.

1

u/stevethepirate89 16h ago

What a flex

1

u/sbnbigdick69 16h ago

You need to get out more.

1

u/DoYouTrustToothpaste 15h ago

Looks trustworthy.

1

u/dead_pixel_design 15h ago

A number of dentists in my city have novelty themed bike racks, no other businesses I see around do this. What is the connection

1

u/Dry-Ant-5181 15h ago

I don't know how convenient this is with normal bike racks but I do know several kids have tried climbing on it from the toothpaste bottle alone

1

u/Next-Job7874 15h ago

I love public art tingz 🥰💪

1

u/PrincessMoo-Moo 14h ago

I love whimsical inventions like these

1

u/Beaufort_The_Cat 14h ago

I legit live down the road from this picture I believe lol always amused when I see this driving

1

u/Mystro10210 14h ago

9/10 of the dentists working there approved of it.

1

u/JonatasA 14h ago

Dentist probably parks his toothbrush there.

1

u/DisastrousCrow11 14h ago

Am I the only one who thought it's a weirdly shaped pointer/arrow?

1

u/Pikkumyy2023 14h ago

The one near me has a bike rack made like teeth with braces and they change the rubber bits around them to match the holidays.

1

u/Sad_Astronomer_2799 13h ago

wait till you see the bong bike rack outside of the pipe shop in portland, OR.

1

u/allieressa 13h ago

THIS IS SO CUTE????

1

u/Viltas22 11h ago

Awesome!

1

u/Sorry-Diet611 10h ago

Gotta appreciate the creativity, who knew a bike rack could be this clever and make you smile before a dental checkup.

1

u/n2vdubz 10h ago

Awesome!

1

u/spiritedhippo22 10h ago

meanwhile my dentist office has maga signs

1

u/AccomplishedIgit 9h ago

I briefly considered there is a dentist’s catalogue of fun things like this that must offices just don’t buy because they’re too stuffy, Id love to look through it if this is the kind of stuff they sell! Alas probably yes, it is a one-off art installation

1

u/Downtown_Snow4445 8h ago

That's Sir Velo's parking spot

1

u/Elder_Hoid 7h ago

This was under a Silksong post and I thought it was Hornet's needle at first

1

u/100nipples 6h ago

There’s a bicycle shop nearby to me that has a bicycle-bicycle rack. Good fun, very impractical but i like it.

1

u/zapdoszaperson 2h ago

More function things need to be shaped like giant versions of other things.

1

u/digitalbladesreddit 20m ago

No bikes at all? Reserved for dentist bikes only?

0

u/Don_T_Blink 19h ago

Why are the letters in the mirror not mirrored?!

5

u/alienblue89 16h ago

It’s a window and I think they’re inside

1

u/panmaterial 13h ago

There are transparent windows now?!?!

0

u/No_Artichoke_8428 18h ago

At first I saw a sperm.

1

u/presidentiallogin 16h ago

Sorry, I thought I knocked loud enough.
